80g DB 48"x24"x16" Livestock Suggestions!

premilove

The Empire
Hey I really need help making a livestock list. I had a 120 but it cracked a month or 2 after my cycle so I haven't really had a tank this large before. I've only kept nanos. The new tank is going to be a mixed reef however more towards SPS.

So far i have...

2 clowns (coming from current tank)
3 Helfrichi firefish
3 Purple firefish
3 Red firefish

If I were to get a wrasse, I'd like for it/them not to burrow into my sand bed as I would like to keep corals on the sand bed. Are there any non-burrowing wrasses?

Can I keep a tang or two? If so, what would you recommend?

Anthias?

Thank you!

Those firefish will fight. If your lucky you'll get a pair and the others will be pushed out.

Flasher and fairy wrasses do not burrow and most would be ok in that size tank. Just look around and be sure you're getting peaceful species. I would get three juveniles of the same species. Wrasses are generally easier than anthias.

I wouldn't put a tang in an 80 gallon tank. If you must, however, stick with a tomini or kole.

+1 on tomini or kole. also the firefish info is correct. if you are going to keep wrasses and firefish, make sure you have a tight fitting top, because they are all known jumpers

Great information in that post!

Wow I did not know that the fire fish would all fight. Thank you for that info. I'll stick with helfrichi's. So no tang would work out in my tank other than the ones that were mentioned? I've seen people with tangs in 2' cubes. I'm not trying to be stubborn. Just trying to learn :)

I also love firefish, throughout the years, I have tried different combinations and now I have finally found a winning one, I have one red firefish and one Helfrichi and they have no problems together at all. With out a doubt the Helfrichi is my favourite though. Purple and Helfrichi were constantly fighting, purple and red constant fights, two purples were fights, tried 4 reds and ended up with 1. Only thing I never tried was multiple Helfrichi, only because it is hard to get a Helfrichi in Canada and it took a while to get just 1

Instead of a tang that you might not actually like, why don't you consider a dwarf angel, very colorful.

People that keep tangs in 2' cubes do not care about the fish and only care about pleasing their own eyes, they will end up replacing the tang as it will die far earlier then it should. Most Tangs need a lot of swimming space to be happy and healthy

have you tried more than 1 red? fortunately helfrichi's are very common by my place.

i'm afraid of the possibility of the dwarf angel picking at my corals!

Bear in mind that Ray's experience may be specific to his particular fish. Not enough data to conclude that helfrichis get along better with red firefish than purple ones in general.

i'll have to look into it more. thank you! i'll probably just end up with a trio of helfrichis.

Your post also asked about a recommendation for a wrasse. Spend the add'l $ if you can and look at a Lineatus. Beautiful and peaceful wrasse.

Also check out a Flame Hawk Fish - I have a bonded pair and the interaction between them is a great addition to my tank. Just last night 1 somehow found its way into the overflow (which is covered) and after I opened a bigger hole in the grate covering the overflow the other came by to entice and show the other where to come back out. Watching 1 show the other where to exit and their interaction made me realize that fish are more intelligent than we think. After the fish got out they proceeded to frolic about throughout the tank. They really are a trip so I would recommend a bonded pair - they come up on DD which is where I got mine from.

Lol that's awesome. You should have recorded it! The reason why I'm against having one is bc the way they perch. The last thing I would want is for them to perch on my sps. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong! You sold me on the lineatus :)
