90 Gal reef for the girls.

Huhhhhh

New member
Ok so the girls talked me into doing a tank for them. I was originally going to use my 55 gal sump as I wanted to replace it with something more functional anyways. After determining that over 10 years of crud and calcium build up, it was not worth the effort to try and clean it up enough to make a reef tank out of it.

So off to Scott's I go. To make a long story short he had a 55 and stand I bought, took the stand home and left the tank to be drilled the following weekend. So we're about ready to drill the first hole when Scott mentioned I wish you would have bought something I can fit into to drill these holes. I say like what, he says like that 90 over there. Hummm bigger is better, right. Done deal. So the 55 and stand are returned and the 90 is bought and drilled.

Next weekend back at Scott's discussing stand, canopy, and sump ideas. He said that 75 gal sitting on that stand just dropped in price from the owners. Hummm, nice oak stand, needs a little work nice Oceanic tank, ding ding ding, hey I can make my sump out of that (Sorry Eric). So the tank and stand make the trip home for less than what the material would have cost to build just a sump for me.

The fun begins. Kathy wants the stand and canopy black, so the sanding begins. We need to break through the clear finish so the black stain will soak in.

As you can see from the pic's the stain didn't work out as planned. It would just not turn the wood black, it got dark brown at the most.

Hummmm, that's not looking to good.

Yeah, don't like that at all.

After discussing it with Chris he mentioned that Tiffany spray painted a cabinet of hers with Krylon plastic paint that needed no sanding or prep. I didn't feel good about spraying on paint over the amount of goopy waxy stain we just drenched this stand in so it was back to the sanding board.

After the second sanding the spraying begins, Ahhhhhhhhhh, now this is what I'm talking about. Starting to look good.

Nice even coats and you can see the wood grain real nice.

We finished spraying the stand today and a minor hinge replacement ordeal sent us back to the store to get the proper hinges with no offset.

Next I will need to build a canopy since I can't find one I like.

After that I need to do a temporary sump out of the 90 gal so I can tear apart the existing sump & plumbing system of the 125.

Then I need to build the new sump system and get it plumbed. Then I can disconnect the 90 and set it up upstairs right above the 125. It will be plumbed through the floor down to the sump hooked to the 125, so water changes and chemicals will benefit both tanks.

Once again Scott has been a valuable source of goods and services and I sure he will continue to be during this project.

More to come later.

Nice, but she is doing all the work, you are just hanging around watching!!!
That's not true. I'm taking all you guys into consideration, I figure you would much rather look at a female than myself, that and I know how to focus the camera. She has been helping out though, I get thirsty and need a drink now and then.

Dude that stand looks brand new! I bet it will be hard to build a matching canopy though.

Yeah the crown molding may be a little tricky but I'll figure it out.

All I can say is that having 2 tanks plumbed together is very cool. My 10 is maintenance free other than cleaning the viewing panels.
I don't know why more people with multiple tanks don't do it this way.
You'll have to maybe draw something up, I'm sure most people reading this aren't fully aware of what you are doing.

So when do you anticipate setting up the 90 as a sump and going for the sump replacement? I'll help you plumb it as much as I can.

Tim, are we still doing the electrical we talked about?

Yeah, I'll need you to accompany me to the Home Depot so maybe I can get everything I need in one trip vs about 69 trips if I were to try and do it myself. What time is good for you?

Are you talking about today Tim? No can do today. Maybe we can hookup sometime this week after work to get the materials. Next weekend is the meet and I cant work Sundays. So you and Scott have to duke it out and see who gets me the following Saturday! LOL!

I agree, Wicked Weasel rocks, my chick wears nothing else.

I'll be doing a little of sps, lps, Softies and fish. That's what I'm doing now and it seems to be working fine. I will be adding a G4X skimmer and a calcium reactor to the new set up.

I'm flexible it's not something I need to do immediately. As far as after work goes Fridays work best for me as I try and get out of there around 3:30.
Mon. thru Thur. I have to much going on with the kids, homework, dinner and stuff.

Man I suck at drawing I couldn't draw a straight line twice if you paid me. I don't have any cad software either. Maybe this weekend or next I can get all the temp plumbing hardware together and get it done then or at least by the end of the month.

I got a link to some free software from eric maybe I'll try my hand ant cad hacking something together, hang on

Ant Cad? Never heard of that program before. Is that like Auto Cad?

Looks like a great project Tim. Maybe I can help you out with the crown molding. The last several stands I build I ended up making my own molding with my router. I can't guarantee I will have all the necessary bits to pull it off but if i don't I am pretty sure we can get pretty close.
