900 Gallon Reef Project

On your next video, or next time you get the camera out, do you mind sharing a little more of your equipment room?

you never got a picture of the Kalk reactor, and i was wondering how the refugium above the sump is going.

On a side note, where did you get your Sump?
MRC is the only place i have see use the white poly for sumps. and how is it still working for you?

Thanks!

Ill take a video of the pump room again this week. The sump is perfect, no issues with it. I don't know where RAD got the sump made, I can find out though.

The fuge is doing really well, I have to prune back all types of calerpa every two weeks or so.

I would very much like to see more updates. I have a huge admiration for your tank. Interested in more pics and videos if possible. Love what you've done sir.

Big update folks. After battling problems that have baffled everyone I have brought in to review the setup. I am breaking down the tank and starting fresh with Marco Rocks. That means more aquascaping pics and videos for you all to enjoy over the next few weeks. I am aiming to get this all redone by Thanksgiving so stay tuned.

When you update again, can you go into detail a little about your "problems"

(i know at one time, you had heavy metal problems from a pump, and you thought you fixed it with some absorbing media. and then upgraded the lights for better numbers. But if there were more or if those same problems kept plaguing you, can you go into a little detail for us? and if you think some of the metal and such absorbed in the rocks and sand and thats what kept plaguing you, then feel free to let us know.)

I agree, i love this tank!! (size and location and equipment)

From the very start I had issues with the tank and any SPS corals. Even leathers and zoas would not do well in shaded areas. I would try all sorts of solutions but I feel something got into the live rock, either from the start or from the pump that was being leached out in small enough quantities that it didn't kill off shrimp and crabs but stressed corals and anenomes out to the point of death. It could have also been my experiment with going low nutrient, because ever since I went low nutrient, any time my alk goes over 8 everything wipes out.

Also from day 1 I never had any polyp extension on any SPS and no real appreciable growth on SPS. I have had the water tested 20 times by various methods and no one can give me a solid answer. So at this point rather than spend money on keeping a fish only, I am going to rebuild from scratch not doing anything crazy but doing all basic things the right way.

when you say Macro rocks what do you mean? My tanks have large rocks, minimum of 18-24", some up to 36-40". I like starting dead so that I know exactly what goes in.

Marcorocks.com is the brand of dry rock I will use to start out. I am going for some of the largest pieces they can get their hands on for me.

did you just say you are starting over from scratch? Are you keeping the limestone? I was thinking about stealing your idea for the bottom of my tank

I am going to keep the tile and get rid of all the live rock and sand. We are going to scrub the whole interior and flush the system out. I think that should handle it if not we may redo the tile.

have you thought of doing a acid wash to etch the outside of the tile? its a calcium based tile, so after a simple etching, you could run some baking soda to neutralize it.

just a thought.

I will probably wash the inside with muriatic acid during the cleaning process. I really should have done this a long time ago. I can't wait to rescape as well, I wasn't too happy with the current scaping.

were you happy with the flow and the OM?
any other things you are looking forward to other then getting going again, and re-aquascaping?

have you adjusted any of your QT/FRAG tank/ Refugium, or any of your equipment?

(hows the standup going?)

The flow is amazing I think I have close to 18k gallons per hour between the 3 pumps. I love the OMs. I just can't wait to see the coral growth I had in my other tanks. Also can't wait to be able to have a giant carpet anemone.

Tanks like this are the reason I got into the hobby. I can only hope to have something like this some day...might need a new job before that though.
