900 Gallon Reef Project

why didn't you go with marco rocks as originally planned ?

They didn't have any of the dry Fiji rock left. That stuff is amazing but I needed to get started this week. I ordered a plastic horse trough to cure my rock in and am anxious to get started. If they had the Fiji in stock I would have gone through them.

Hi,

I just caught up with this one.
Are you still running the bio pellets?. What volume?.

It sounds like your SPS were gradually STN'ing from the bases?.... Whereas softies and lps were lasting longer?.....

Were the SPS gradually losing color, then going very pale before stripping?

These are symptoms of coral starvation, likely due to overdosing with bio pellets.
In my experience, larger tanks need relatively less pellets to keep lower nutrient levels, so most go into complete stripping....

I couldn't get the whole picture from what you have posted, but maybe somebody on RC might be able to help if we have more details....

There have been no biopellets in the system for over 8 months now. I even took off the GFO and only run carbon sparsely. The problem with the corals was no polyp extension and then a gradual lightening of color in SPS with occasional burning at the tips of the corals. The STN wasnt happening from the base, it was from the tips down.

Some LPS haven't been effected but leathers and Zoas were having issues as well. All my params are pretty solid:

PH- 8.4-8.2
Alk- 9
Nitrate- not detectable
Phosphate- .03 on a hanna meter (which is + or - .04)
Mag- 1450
Calcium- 450

Rock is in and its amazing, each of the large pieces weighs about 35 pounds and looks great. Its going to be a pain in the *** to get this stuff pieced together but I think its going to be well worth it. We are going to start by doing one half of the tank at a time. Here is a shot of one of the big pieces:

I started my tank with the majority of marco rock and seeded with select live rock. Just out of curiousity......are you going to put all 660 pounds of rock in the main display...seems a bit much. OR some in the display and more in the sump/refugium?

Be prepaired for that pukani rock to leech phosphates for some time. Some sea clear while you are curing will help greatly.

at this point, Do you fully believe that the limestone was not the cause of the problems you had? I'm strongly considering using it for the bottom of my tank and possibly going bare bottom.

660 is going to be divided between the fuge and the main display. Considering I have 1200 pounds of rock in the tank now, I figured with the larger pieces 500 pounds in the display would cover me.

Its been used in over 200 installations so I doubt its just my batch that caused the problems. We have already pulled out about 200 pounds of old rock from the tank and things are looking better already. That plus I have decided to remove any items that could be causing issues from the system to go as simple as possible. I think the tank is finally turning a corner now.

I am currently designing some LED boards to replace my Reeftech Lighting over my 900 gallon tank. I wanted to get some feedback from some of the DIYers on the forum regarding the potential design. I am attempting to get a look as close to a 20k Geissman Metal Halide bulb as I can. Here is the board design I was looking at for up to 18 controllable channels. I am looking for recommendations on led colors and bin numbers to complete the job.

I will be using a combination of Cree XPG and XPE leds.

Any thoughts on the best way to blend the light from each board? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I also posted this in the DIY boards.

Glad things are improving....

Is the reeftech lighting not sufficient?.

Phishguy. why not use Starboard, which is commonly used in barebottom tanks in the US, I believe?.

Reeftechs are great, I am just upgrading the housing and having Reeftech build me custom boards. I want to have some more options in terms of color spectrum and to spread the boards more evenly among the openings over my tank.
