900 Gallon Reef Project

Great video, wish I had the experience to be of some help with your corals. Your tank is one of my favorites documented here, and I appreciate that you keep your thread updated. What equipment did you use to make the video?

Just a Flip HD video cam, its cheap and it suits me well considering I stink at filming things.

Okay 24 hours after running 1L of Cuprisorb in a media reactor and I am seeing polyp extension on corals that haven't had any in weeks. I guess it must have either been copper or some other heavy metal that leached into the tank from the blown pump. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that this fixes the issue.

I actually just had a seal go out on my skimmer pump and I know I had metal in my tank last year so I think I am going to order some myself. Thanks...

how long do you think you will run it before putting in a test coral? (hard probably)
and are you going to continuously run it? (from now on)

glad to hear some good results from the product. (may get a bottle for myself as backup just in case)

I have some coral frags that I couldnt relocate in the tank now. So I have like 3 stonies in there right now a tri color stylo, scroll coral and a few tiny monties that are looking 100% better already. I am going to probably run this for 6-12 months just in case whatever it is continues to leach out. All of my LPS looked pretty good to begin with, minus the Acans.

Someone on the water chemistry forum responded he had the exact same thing happen to him and just his SPS so he ran Cuprisorb for 6 months and was back in action. So I can't take credit for the idea!

So, after doing some reading about these bio pellets, I may have been running my Alk a bit too high for a low nutrient system. I have been running my alk in the 11.5-11.0 range and people have been experiencing the same problems I have had. I am thinking that some of my corals may have experienced some Alk burn. I am going to try and lower my alk into the 9.5-10.0 range and see if there is any difference. The lack of polyp extension, both day and night, is a pretty big clue that I am dealing with alk burn. Ill post up some more coral pics later today.

Benny,

Truly remarkable.

It's tough to see the issues your SPS have been having.

Really pumped for you that the new cupri stuff is helping knock it out. Are you running that in a reactor or just passively? For the next year, I would assume?

Also, I was getting alk burn in my system when it was barely under 11. I brought it down to 8.5 and things started looking quite a bit better. Nitrates were <.5ppm on a Lamotte kit at the time so I'm assuming it was a low nutrient thing.

This thread alone encouraged a long time lurker to finally log in again. Haven't posted here in like 8 years but read often. Lots of great builds but this one is certainly one of the best. Just wanted to say thanks for the pictures and videos, as well as way to really dig into the issue and resolve it pretty quickly. Deltec's customer service really sucks for not getting on this sooner.

Amazing stocking selection. Can't say enough.

Best wishes,
Dustin

Dustin,

Thanks for the kind words and for sharing your experience. I had a few questions for you with regards to handling calcium additions in a low nutrient system that has been show to be prone to "alk burn". How do you handle calcium additions while keeping your Alk so low? Kalkwasser additions spike the alk into "burn" territory and a calcium reactor outputs at around 12dkh. I am going to have to find a cost effective solution that prevents my dkh from getting too high. I am currently sitting at a dkh of about 8.0. Also with regards to your question on the cuprisorb, I placed 1L of the product in a media reactor with a low flow rate to ensure appropriate contact time, no issues so far.

Deltec has responded to my issue once I got the right customer service contact involved and has been amazing since. They are now going to replace both of my motors to the new models, free of charge and are throwing in two spare motors also free of charge! They didn't play any games and really restored the opinion I had of them and their products over the past decade.

Any advice you have would be much appreciated. Now I just need to find a local reef club and get some folks in the house to enjoy it with me! I really need to get some SPS frags in the display, I think its almost time.

i will say that if you were in Texas, and had a local fish club meeting, i would deff bring a SPS frag as a thank you or admission to come see this amazing tank.

in regards to Kalk, because your going to use a reactor and only use it with Top off, i dont think it would spike if you dosed in the sump and by the time it reached the tank, it would be diluted.
(you can also Wye off the RO line and run 1/2 to the Kalk reactor and 1/2 straight TO to the sump. this will reduce the Kalk until your stalked and need full strength Kalk. (a reactor wont be needed for a while. (with that water volume))
it has taken my tan(240 gal) 1.5 years before really needing a reactor. i have dosed in the past and done water changes to keep up with the demand until it finally came time to reduce the water changes and just implement the reactor.

Of course, sharing details about this sort of thing is what it's all about.

Unfortunately my experiences with this are on much smaller scales (as would be 99% of the people in relation to this behemoth!).

The tank this occurred in was <60g total water volume and I was able to use a simple two part solution. 1 part alkalinity supplement to 3 parts calcium is what I had to do in order to keep the levels up with SPS and clams, without a super high dKh to buffer things.

I also maintained my magnesium above 1280pppm, which was made much simpler after I switched to D-D H2Ocean Pro salt (mixes ~1350ppm). The pH of the system became marginally less stable after lowering the alkalinity but on a system such as yours you might be able to put your lights on the fuge and grow out tank on a reverse cycle. Doubt it would be an issue with such a massive water column though.

The two part wouldn't be cost effective for you considering the scale. I believe a friend of mine can help me answer this and I'll contact him about it. He has done a number of large (>300g) tanks and his method is to keep things as close to natural seawater as possible, which is difficult given the fact that it walks the line of precipitation. If he doesn't know I'm sure he can find it for me.

REALLY great to hear that Deltec came through. They seem to make some quality products so I'm glad they have some service to go along with it.

As for the frag group...what are you waiting on?! I'd KILL to see that tank. It's massive! As for getting SPS in there, here's what I'd do: Join a respected club. Set a date and get a keg of good beer. Tell the members to bring a chair and a single SPS frag and come enjoy a Saturday night in Fiji. If it was within an hour I sure as s*** would make it.
