900 Gallon Reef Project

Your tank is going to be really nice - congratulation. I have a question only - why sell you a lamp in the old housings? From what I know, the manufacturer has changed for new housing - because, as the designer himself wrote, "it was an accident at work. " The new cabinet is made of PVC and has improved cooling. Maybe because they want to sell all the old - and yet to be put in the new, made of plastic?
Are you also confirmed that the program of "passing cloud" working? From what I know - do not - and is still in beta - but write about it for 4 months!
Additionally - why have not bought the lamps with the latest solutions available on the market?
Good luck!
Personally, I think you have too many lamps - corals will have too much light, the more of these lamps shine a narrow beam of light (even though they are without a lens).
I had a video to your YouTube account with their lamp - but the RTL did everything he could to remove it from YouTube (you can see this was not beneficial for them?) :-)
Good luck guys! I no longer spend lamps for free in exchange for good reviews? :-)

First - Your tank is awesome. First class all the way. You are truely a master builder and I have enjoyed reading every page of your build thread.

It's unfortunate that Przemyslaw (patty67swe) felt the need to post to your thread. I suspect he regrets it as it's fairly easy to see his motivation. Regardless, it seems somewhat inappropriate as your thread is about your tank and your vision, not petty politics. I think that's what they call 'hijacking' isn't it?

I figure I can chime in as the link posted by Przemyslaw to the thread on Canreef is my thread. It's interesting because if you take the time to read my early posts, I was ready to pull the trigger and buy his lights.

The other link posted is to a thread that was closed by the ReefCentral moderators. Why? - Well, because Przemyslaw hihacked that thread too.

For what it's worth, the pictures posted on my thread are concept lights that are still in the prototype phase. There is no shipping date and there are no prices available. Perhaps I jumped the gun when I posted them but the intent was to generate feedback for the new design. All products evolve, but the currently available ReefTech lights are the exact same LED technology and they are shipping now.

Don't let someone with five posts and vendetta with ReefTech derail your awesome thread. I invite Przemyslaw to raise his concerns on my thread on Canreef, but I would ask that he not use an alias (patty67swe) and that the discussion be kept acedemic. I'm not interested in the politics either.

Anyway, keep up the good work and let's see some pictures of the tank with the new lights lit up!

You got to love getting trolled in your own thread and getting accused of getting free lights in exchange for good reviews! I'll be more than happy to show whoever that guy was the cancelled check for the lights, I wish I got them for free.

I don't know how you know what lamps I received considering I haven't posted any pictures yet. The lamps are not in the old housings because I saw the old housings at Absolutely Fish in Clifton NJ hanging on a 200 gallon tank. I chose the Reeftech's because of a myriad of reasons. The front end software that I got to test at the shop was great. It handled sunrise, sunset, passing cloud simulation and also the ability to tweak intensity on a level that I don't see many other units offering.

I got to take apart a unit to inspect the quality of the build. No cheap Chinese capacitors or sub-par materials, the build is clean and well thought out, I would even say its over engineered for the task. No cheap heat-sink and passive cooling to under-drive the LEDs. Plus the support is local to NJ and not in some other country, the owner actually came after we got the lights installed and walked me through every step. That's dedication and true customer service.

I got to see no less than 10 different units side by side at the store including Acans, Pacsun and the Reeftechs. The output appears to be more powerful and to me it was more pleasing to the eye. I didn't want to dive into the decision like I did with the Acans, so I really took my time because it was such a large investment of both time and money. I watched the growth of corals in the 200 gallon over at Absolutely Fish over a period of 2 months, it was amazing compared to what they previously had with metal halides.

Considering I have a 120"x48"x36", 8 lights is what I needed especially because of the bracing/rim on the tank. Also it may be too much @ 100% but I can scale back the power so in the end I get better coverage.

I am actually making a a video of the sunrise sunset and other features of the tank tonight and tomorrow, I'll post it up here along with the PAR readings. In the end I got to see the item live in action, test the software and got amazing customer service from Reeftech. They spent a lot of time dialing everything in for me and training me on how to use their product, which I find to be superior to the other offerings out there. If that somehow bothers you, that's not my fault.

I have been a fan of this thread and build from the start. I love your galley area behind the tank!
I am glad you are happy with the lights, it looks like you have a good spread from them considering the 48" front to back. and afterall that is all that matters aslong as you and your stock are happy with the lights then who cares about the un neccessary politics that have been brought into an awesome thread.

Awesome, I would love to put two of those fixtures over my 90 gallon. I read that they also simulate a thunder storm but I have not seen video of that yet.

Thanks, that catwalk back there makes my life so much easier. The spread on these is amazing but thats because they don't have any optics to focus the light into a beam. I was amazed at how when these are hung at the same height as the Acans that they cover the back tile of the tank and there are no dark spots. I had to supplement with halides to cover up for the "banding" that would occur, I mean I could tell you by looking at the tank how many lights I had above. Don't get me wrong, the Acans are great lights for many applications, I just don't think they fit in well on a tank of my dimensions. Ill take a couple of pictures at the various levels of intensity for the 3 color channels later along with a sunrise/sunset video.

Here is a video of the result, sorry for the nausea inducing shaky camera work.

I will have one up in the next few days, they also do cloud simulation. I am trying to convince the owner to put in some Red LEDs for night viewing. From what I can tell the boards are easy to swap, so if you want purple or green or red LEDs you can probably do it if you are handy. Plus I think they will do custom stuff if you send them an email.

video looks great. Not having any optics really makes a difference to the shimmer as well as the spread. A lot of LEDs I have seen with tight optics make the shimmer too tight IMO, these look really nice. I look forward to reading the PAR results, great work mate.

Yeah the coverage is insane, no dark spots at all, the tight optics also cause the par meter to be off the charts in some spots and then it plummets like a stone if you move the meter a few inches. I can't wait till it comes in and I can do some readings. Supposedly a shop in Pittsburgh has already done a similar test, I just need to find it.

I love your tank!
Mind telling everyone what the specs are on your new light setup please:)
Also can we get some updates on your equipment fish room pics please too.

Great tank! I'm looking at getting the LED's for my new build you seem happy with them? I'm looking at a 500gal 96"x 48" x 27". do you think 4 of them or 8 like you have?

I think you can probably get away with 6 depending on the location of any braces. I would reccommend these lights over anything on the market right now. I will post a video shortly of the cloud simulation and the thunderstorm simulation as well. Supposedly there is are a few new versions of the lights out that are much more compact and some that come with T5s, but are essentially the same components that I have. I have had tremendous growth the past few months, I would say in the past 2 months the grown equals the previous 6 months combined.

Is there something missing from your fish list? Maybe pair of clowns ;).... Very nice build by the way and good luck with the rest.

Thunderstorm sim video as promised. Also this is only being done with 4 lamps at the moment! I need to synchronize both banks to do all 8, should figure that out soon. Be sure to set it to 720p and then check it out.
