9002 air intake plugged

I have a problem with salt creep somehow plugging the air intake of my skimmer. The plug occurs at the plastic elbow that joins the tubing to the pump. After completely cleaning the elbow, it only took two weeks to plug up again this last time. Other than periodically shooting some RO/DI down the tubing, what can I do to prevent this? The tank is an 18" cube. The overflow is directed right into the mechanical filter portion of the nano Reefpack and the skimmer sits in the rear of the 5"x5" overflow section. I did make a mod which was to shorten the airline tubing because the skimmer lid wanted to pop off and the airline seamed to get crimped at its full length. Also, one of my 6055's i clicking again so I may need to request the little bushing again. Love your products and thank in advance.

Soak the elbow in a mix of hot water and vinegar, get it absolutely clean. If the skimmer is under a hood or canopy, this could be part of the problem, or it may be too deeply submerged, try raising it just a quarter inch or so. Trimming the airline would not be related, the air it is taking in is too laden with salt water.
