I have a 90 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump and am looking at getting a 9010 for it, but is that to much skimmer for a 100~ gallon system?

Originally I just wanted a 9006 but then I found out you it requires a $50 kit for sump use unless you keep the water at 11'' which is just asking for a flood if my return pump goes out. Please correct me if I'm wrong about the water level.

As a result I figured I might as well just move up to the 9010 for just a bit more money if I can.

This is correct, 9006 is a bit misunderstood, it was designed almost specifically for in tank use, the short cup was designed to fit under a canopy. While it can be used in sump, for the reason you point out, it is almost always better to go with the 9011 (current equivalent of 9010).
