90g Upgrade--Starting Over

OK, I'm starting from scratch here--well, actually I do stilll have the sump, pump & fuge...

Am I better off with a tank that has dual or single overflow? I already have a Iwaki 19GPM pump. I'm planning to add a Sea Swirl to the output.

If you sold your tank you will be happy getting a 120 the 24" is great vs. 18" you can create a better looking landscape and you can fit more corals. I always like dual overflows for saftey just incase a snail or something else blocks the standpipe you wont have a flood. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Jeni,

Don't know much about single vs double overflows but the return seems a little strong? Which is fine but it willl make more of that "waterfall" sound in the back.

I have a bunch of equipment sitting in the garage, call me if your looking for something.

Congradulations on the upgrade. Reef, FOWR, or Coral only?

Actually you could create a better looking landscape and fit more corals if you went with a 300g!!!!

I'm upgrading my 55g & now have an overflow of corals 9zoas mosthy) in a 50g, where I'm holding the LR I bought from Doubledown.

I actually do have room for a 6' tank (125g--don't really need the height of a 120g--short arms too), although it's on an inside wall... We've got 1 floor jack but a friend says he has 2 for me. I'm considering a 125g. I have a 125g on the opposite wall. It's on a regular iron stand, so I can keep other tanks, ect under it. I'm considering doing that again. It's just in my office.

Ed, you think that Iwaki is too strong?

The 120 is not taller than a 90 it is the same height. Those specs are from AllGlass website.

90: 48" x 18" 24"
120: 48" x 24" x 24"

Aha! Well that might be better yet--then I wouldn't have to move the present tank 1st. The upgrade is going kitty-corner from the 55g. More room in the front then, for clams & brains! I'm wondering if the 6 T5s I got, would be enough for a 120?

Jeni I believe six should be enough pm The Grim Reefer on RC he is the T5 guru and just tell him what you want to keep and what bulb layout you want to use. If your keeping zoos, lps, and clams this is more than enough. I made a setup for my girlfriend of 6 bulbs of the Sunlight TEK on a custom sized 40 gallon tank 24" x 18" 22" and have the bulbs mounted six inches above the water and I had to move it up more due to bleaching on some LPS pieces. T5's are great I am going to pull out the VHO actinic supplements on my current show tank and use the T5's actinics along with my halides this winter.

Do you think a 20g sump & 20g fuge is big enough for a 120g tank? I also only have a 125g Css for a skimmer. Probably have to upgrade that too.

Jeni, I have a 20 gallon sump/fuge for my 125, so you should be fine with two 20's.
As far as the pump goes, what is it rated for at the head height the tank will be at. Then you can see if one drain is enough or if you can use another one. Move as much water as you can.
I'd second your thought about a better skimmer, you know you'll have this new tank filled with stuff, and it keeps growing.
I hope to be working on a new tank soon too.

Jeni,

You saw my setup yesterday, I have a 40 breeder for a sump with a fuge built in. Idealy a seperate fuge would have been better for more macro but space was limited. I don't think you'll have a problem with two 20's.

It has a double, it came with it.

If your tank isn't drilled with two 0verflows you could drill it your self or use siphomn overflows.
