A ~19,000 Gallon Aquarium

I have some updates regarding the design of the seating area. Here is what is actually being done now:

The architect (my brother) has an idea for the shading which sounds great but I still haven't seen any designs. I'll upload anything I get. I think he is thinking of having an open-able shading system. We'll have to wait and see.

Here are some of the goodies I got today:

I got a company to do the electrical supply for the tank and the engineer said "The federal electricity and water authority prohibits pulling electricity from a residential supply for a commercial project". I had to convince him that the tank is not commercial and that it is for personal pleasure. He still wasn't convinced and came back today for some measurements and said "Are you sure this is a personal project??"

I am still laughing..

I've seen this design work before, except lions entered at one end and Christians at the other :) It's nice of you to set up a viewing area for the fish to see :)

The controller will keep you busy (quiet) for awhile. Try to shield it from the heat of the sun and the rain. The probe wire length is somewhat limited for your application so you will have to get creative. Perhaps a conduit line could be drilled into the concrete with a plastic tube to hold and protect the probes. If your water level is variable, you could mount the probes on a floating sheet of styrofoam so it doesn't allow the probes to dry out or submerge too deep.

Make sure you plug the temp and water level sensors into the right (top & bottom) ports as it can be misinterpreted. The iphone ap is great peace of mind when you start travelling again.

Dual modules/probes are nice because you can directly compare incoming sea water and outgoing waste water for PH, salinity, ORP etc. If there is a big discrepancy between the two values you can use the controller to turn on the pump from the ocean to increase water turnover, assuming the seawater is better than the display water.

Avocado Shake? I am sending you a pm on that one. We have LOTS of trees and another treat from the avocados would be nice. If I cant make it right will have to stop by and sample yours when the United Arab Emirates aqaurium is completed.

Just caught up on this OUTSTANDING thread. Had to play hooky on the second half of the work day, but I must say that you have done a remarkable job of putting this tank together. I'm absolutely blown away by this build. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more!

That's a pretty nice controller and I would worry about heat. The unit may not be designed to be installed outdoors and will probably need to have an environment closer to indoor temperatures. I worked on the HVAC systems for the Florida Aqaurium in Tampa and most of the life support system controllers were installed in conditioned environments.
Check the installation instructions carefully so the controller doesn't fail . The warranty may not be honored if the failure is beacuse of the installation.

Expecting some big crowds?

7.9 meters seems awefully far. Is your front pane as big as a theatre screen ?

When people view my tank they go nose to nose with it, and sometimes that's not close enough!

Also, are you planning on having large crowds sit around for hours and stare?

As I mentioned earlier. Set up some temporary seating as a mockup so you can test drive the idea. I find, as derekdelisi mentioned, people prefer to sit close up on th edge of an elevated seat like a bar stool. Of course I must respect the cultural differences, sitting cross legged on the floor on carpets vs. slumping on a bar stool :)

Your display may prove to be best viewed from above. The wave action at the surface will be the challenge. Even a large floating viewing tray isn't enough to get a good view. If you start chartering tours to see the tank it may pay for two acrylic panels that span the two opposing ends of the tank. Each panel would be as wide as the tank and about 2 meters wide. The panels would be submersed just below the water with a water tight 20 cm acrylic wall along the middle edge to keep water out and your visitors dry. This kind of feature wouldn't restrict gas exchange much over such a large interface and it would provide the ultimate viewing experience. I still think the center bridge can be replaced with a clear acrylic (or glass) channel just under the water, like a glass bottom boat. Your kids can pretend they are swimming with the fish. Of course I'm using imaginary money to fulfill my "lofty" idea :)

OK some things to clear up:

  • The 7.9m is the primary seating area. We might something like sofas there.
  • The elevation is a must because the tank is lower than the street level. We decided to provide more seating area just in case. Remember that we will have "commercial" size fish. Even my small fish (the one in the video) was visible from the villas.
  • The steps could also serve as a place to setup the buffet/grill.

As for the remarks about me expecting a big crowd, one can only hope :D

Dont forget to include some drainage from inside your viewing area. If it is lower than street level, water might collect.
