Awesome Tank, Thanks for sharing!
Many RC reefers inspire me to continue in this hobby. Tanks many come and go, but love SPS always.
Shih:
I just spent a very enjoyable afternoon reading through this thread and marveling at your results. I do have what I would guess to be a reef philosphy question for you.
I too travel quite frequently for work although I do have family and friends to keep any eye on things when I'm gone. That said, I've gone with a much simpler approach sticking close to the basic berlin method. I run a decent skimmer, have good live rock and run a small fuge. I also run a pretty high end Ca Reactor. My goal was to reduce possible failure points as much as possible and to create robust biological filtration.
With the number of things you are dosing, do you worry about slight imbalances causing cascading failure? By way of example, if one of your dosing pumps fails, would it create serious problems in your absence?
I ask this with deep respect for your results but I'm curious about how you feel about the complexity of your setup.
Thanks and please keep posting. It has been fascinating following this thread.
I agree with you completely.
Trust Is Good. Control Is Better. Simplicity is Best.
However, my principle is I rather tank tear down, lost all my coral, but not any damage to my house and neighbor, especial I had tiny house burn experience by my tank in US caused by Calcium reactor operation error ;-(
Another reason I choose dosing system instead of Calcium reactor is due to one factor that may never happen in US. Power outage over 24 hours. The odd happen power outage over 24 hours in Taiwan is much higher than GHL or my auto system malfunctioning by my calculation. I worry if power outage too long, once it back on, all my reactors (if I use them) may drain toxic water to my tank especial when whole family out of town...
Not necessary this is right thing to do. My next tank will put more thought on "simplicity is best" ;-)
Sorry about the stn shih, hope it stops soon enough!
Corals have gotten really big.
Has that affected your flow?
Good point! I think the density of coral start did affect my flow, and my flow blow some SPS tips ;-(... This is one of the reason I plan to make my next tank wider (from 60 cm to 90 cm), but live rock placement will keep about same as my current tank only. Hope it work, but I don't know myself can resist keep adding coral and live stock.
I will keep you guy posted about the STN.
Sorry about the STN.
What was the growth rate of A. gomezi before the STN had begun? Mine does not grow very fast, if at all, despite showing good colouration.
My gomezi did not suffer from STN, and I am crossing my fingers that it wot happen...It did grow much slower than staghorn, as you can see from the picture below
