A corner in Taiwan

Ha, I thought there might have more choose than Taiwan.

Haha, yes there is but not the variety you guys have. I have been searching for months for a strawberry shortcake and some guys over here don't even know which acro is that.:sad2:

Looks like a great plan I would personally just leave it the way you have it than having A canopy it keeps a nice flow of the 2 rooms...looking forward to the new build

This is THE reason to look forward to moving to the new house :D
I have a very similar set up. My suggestion is to go without a canopy for many reasons. Additionally you could avoid the internal overflow tower and go for a neat external beananimal overflow, which gives more real estate and can be hidden behind the upper part of the furniture.

That's a pity. Strawberry is one of the sps popular exchange between reefers in Taiwan. Hope you good luck there.

Excellent new build pics,I am hooked.

I hope I can build one 99% like what I designed.

Vote for no canopy. Thanks. That actually what I like more.

Indeed when my wife asked a new house, I have to find my motivation. A bigger tank always a good choose. Yes, I like the look-through view dinning room and living room.

Why not have external weir hidden in the cabinet, better aesthics and flow in tank?

Ha, my house designer said the same thing. However, I don't trust external weir quality by Taiwan tank maker. So, I like all fail possibility happen in the tank, not on external weir. Maybe I did worry too much. Thanks for the advice.

Back to current 125 gallon tank.

I was not paying too much attention on this tank, and I do miss some empty solution when using GHL doser (e.g. KZ AA ...) plus over dose Spur2 (since i tried to experience something before tank tear down), as you can see the result (what a lame excuse above:hmm3:), two 2+ years old coral start STN from the bottom (see red circle area). Anyway, here are recent FTS shot and some evidence show old coral starting unhappy.

Shih:

I just spent a very enjoyable afternoon reading through this thread and marveling at your results. I do have what I would guess to be a reef philosphy question for you.

I too travel quite frequently for work although I do have family and friends to keep any eye on things when I'm gone. That said, I've gone with a much simpler approach sticking close to the basic berlin method. I run a decent skimmer, have good live rock and run a small fuge. I also run a pretty high end Ca Reactor. My goal was to reduce possible failure points as much as possible and to create robust biological filtration.

With the number of things you are dosing, do you worry about slight imbalances causing cascading failure? By way of example, if one of your dosing pumps fails, would it create serious problems in your absence?

I ask this with deep respect for your results but I'm curious about how you feel about the complexity of your setup.

Thanks and please keep posting. It has been fascinating following this thread.

Sorry about the stn shih, hope it stops soon enough!
Corals have gotten really big.
Has that affected your flow?

Hi, my tank is similar as yrs, 3ft by 3ft by 2ft. we are also using the same skimmer.
My mini red dragon skimmer pump died on me recently, so I bought the reef octopus new dc pump 5500s and set to full speed. Our double cone 200 body is large enough to handle this pump.
Been to taiwan on biz trip quite frequent this year.
Went to their Lfs at gaoxiong and Tainan.
There's a guy invented this check valves for your return pump.

My tank built is External Y shaped overflow so that the back of tank can attach vortech pumps.

Awesome Tank, Thanks for sharing!

Many RC reefers inspire me to continue in this hobby. Tanks many come and go, but love SPS always.

I agree with you completely.
Trust Is Good. Control Is Better. Simplicity is Best.

However, my principle is I rather tank tear down, lost all my coral, but not any damage to my house and neighbor, especial I had tiny house burn experience by my tank in US caused by Calcium reactor operation error ;-(

Another reason I choose dosing system instead of Calcium reactor is due to one factor that may never happen in US. Power outage over 24 hours. The odd happen power outage over 24 hours in Taiwan is much higher than GHL or my auto system malfunctioning by my calculation. I worry if power outage too long, once it back on, all my reactors (if I use them) may drain toxic water to my tank especial when whole family out of town...

Not necessary this is right thing to do. My next tank will put more thought on "simplicity is best" ;-)

Has that affected your flow?

Good point! I think the density of coral start did affect my flow, and my flow blow some SPS tips ;-(... This is one of the reason I plan to make my next tank wider (from 60 cm to 90 cm), but live rock placement will keep about same as my current tank only. Hope it work, but I don't know myself can resist keep adding coral and live stock.

I will keep you guy posted about the STN.

Sorry about the STN.

What was the growth rate of A. gomezi before the STN had begun? Mine does not grow very fast, if at all, despite showing good colouration.

My gomezi did not suffer from STN, and I am crossing my fingers that it wot happen...It did grow much slower than staghorn, as you can see from the picture below

Just return from my another London, Madrid business trip... I was so worry I will see all coral bleaching since my wife kept telling me my chiller never stop running during these days in Taiwan....and tank temperature up to 82 degree F...

Anyway, a surprise when back home, I found my old time red color only strawberry cake turn some green now. Ya!!!

And I finally see some growing on my red staghorn....
