A couple growth shots of my SPS collection

Can I get a shot of the setup? Have a frag tank myself and always looking to improve. Feel free to share dosing regimen lighting setup(on off timing), and all other stuff you feel like sharing!! :)
I absolutely love the pictures you put up!

Hi Wolf,

Hope all is well!

I can definitely provide a full tank shot. I moved the corals around yesterday and would love to show off the new placement. Everything was so close together. I had to move some of the smaller pieces to the newly upgraded sump. Bought an MP10 and refurbished my Tek 4 bulb. Once the lights fire up, I'll snap a couple pics.

My daylights are on from 10 to 5. Actinics from 6 to 7. I like to see the tank before I leave for work and when I get home from work.

My tank uses the full ZEO methodology. ZEOStart 3 is dosed 4 times a day via a BRS 1.1ml doser. ZEOBac is dosed twice a week. 6 drops of the bac on 150g net. I also dose Biomate, CV, AAHC, Xtra Special, ZEOFood7, and ZEOSpur once in a great while. I feed Oyster Feast every other night.

The skimmer is an SRO XP-3000 Int with an automatic head cleaner. I use a small amount of carbon for water clarity. I use a 6x24 GEO Ca Reactor, Avast Marine K1 Kalk Stirrer, and dose Calcium Chloride. My top off water is from a 6 stage BRS Delux RODI water filtration unit. Everything is controlled with a RKE controller.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Warmest Regards,
James

That's sooo awesome! I really admire the tank there! Is it your only one? You said no rock.. So this system runs without live rock? do you use any algea like chaeto? I like the ambition. Good going! Hope to see much more!

LOL. Hi Derek,

That fantastic ball of red is a Forest Fire Digitata. It is by far the Reddest coral that I have. When the polyps are retracted, you can see the bright green base.

James

Looking good buddy! It's been too long.....gotta check out your system soon.

MEISEN!!! Where have you been?!?! So glad to hear from you. I'm sure the daughter has taken up quite a bit of your reefing time. The corals I have gotten from you have gotten pretty big as you can see. :)

Hey Wolf,

Thanks for the kind comments!

Well I just added a piece of rock (as you will see from the full tank shot that is loading onto photobucket right now) to the tank to help my pygmy angel sleep at night. Otherwise, she's just drifting around the open bottom. I do have a softball size piece of chaetomorpha. The only time it grows is when I feed the oyster feast on a daily basis. My Hanna always reads .02, so the chaeto serves as a barometer for excess phosphate.

I noticed a color change about half way through the year. What type lighting ate they under?

That is just SICK !
What a nice frag tank.Great job.
I had a slimier fire forest digi that lost that intense color. Any tips to get it back?

Hi Reefmedic,

Hope all is well!

I'm pretty sure that the color change was due to my learning how to use white balance properly. I purchased my first DSLR (Canon Rebel T2i) in February and am still learning how to use it. In the earlier half of the year, I was not feeding my reef and was overdoing it with the ZEO. The very first day of May (2012) I began feeding my tank oyster feast and dialed back the flow through my zeo reactor. I also removed the large amount carbon that I was using passively in the sump. With that said, I have gone back to carbon. I use a very small amount to help with the water clarity. You can see the improvement it has had on the growth of the corals.

Warmest Regards,
James

Hi A.G.,

Hope all is well!

Thank you for the compliment. Under intense lighting (PAR greater than 300) for this specific coral, I lose the green base (it turns white). Once I placed the coral under a PAR level of 230, I regained my green base. To help with the bright vibrant coloration of the polyps, I max out my feeding with a form of aminos combined with oyster feast. My personal secret to success with this tank was finding the right balance between nutrient export and nutrient import (feeding, zeo additives, etc.). Once I combined stable water parameters with the nutrient import/export, growth and color improved rapidly.

Warmest Regards,
James

So what's in the sump only chaeto and a skimmer? No lr? I put my lr in the sump.. Kind of a pain to get detritus out. Any thoughts on that? I don't have the funds for zeo but I do vodka vinegar Oysterfest and polyp labs coral pro food. And amino. With chaeto double over skimming and carbon.

Hey Wolf,

My sump is a 75g tank I rescued from Animart, a wisconsin pet store that was moving to a new location. It houses a coral section (see pic below), my skimmer, heaters, probes, and a zeo reactor.

Detritus in the sump can be a challenge to get out. 2 times a year, I will take out the skimmer, clean it, and remove and detritus in the sump. I do this by scraping all detritus into a corner, and scooping into a brine shrimp net.

ZEO is my method of choice because I wanted the biggest challenge. I've been keeping aquatic life since I was seven (goldfish I won by throwing a ping pong ball in a cup and it was down hill since then). I began keeping saltwater when I was 18 (summer of 99). With over 13 years in the reefing hobby, I wanted to go to the next level. ZEO provided me with that challenge. I've used the same method as you are using with fantastic results. I would test, test, and then test some more. I know exactly how my tank works. That is the key to keeping a successful reef. Knowing your tank and keeping it stable. Feel free to bombard me with questions. I enjoy answering them! :)

P.S. The yellow tang is a temporary inhabitant. He belongs to my good buddy TDB180. Keeping him happy until his new tank is fully cycled.

Warmest Regards,
James

I'm seriously amazed. Same story here first tank when I was 10. Started reef keeping 2yrs ago. (22now) Just got my new frag tank. I ill send you a pm with my q as it is very setup specific. Thanks buddy!

Thank you. I'm very happy you both enjoyed the post. It did take me several hours to put the post together, but your kind comments make the effort worth it.

Thanks Again,
James
