No socks with the previous nor current tank, Nate.

I used them when they were first introduced to the hobby. In my personal experience, they are too high maintenance. LOL

Yeah.. Pretty high maintenance.. I use them but I leave it in for a week and by Wednesday its overflowing...
Kind of gives me the best of both worlds.. A little filtering and a little lars...

I don't have any pictures to share, but I've done this with 1 my previous tank to "catch" detritus from the overflow. I built a drip tray ie those that are used on the old wet/dry system. Place the filter floss/pads on the plate. It will perform the same as the socks. The only pain with this method is you will need to keep buying and replacing the filter floss/pads. I got tire of both so I just vacuum the detritus in the sump monthly. Cheaper and less pain. Hope this helps.

I only asked because I wanted your opinion on if they were no3 and po4 factories. I have 4 in my current sump and they only need replaced once a month so its no pain at all. I have a huge BK 250 skimmer on my 185 gallon tank and just know its too much for my system right now. I was wondering if i should take the socks offline so that "food" is circulating in the tank more for the corals and the skimmer will eventually get it.
Thoughts?

Every hobbyists have his/her own opinions and perspectives. I'm certain that some will differ from my forthcoming answer to your question.

NO3 and PO4 are created if detritus are stagnant and are never removed by the hobbyist. In your case, it shouldn't apply because your overflow is constantly feeding your socks. Also, you will eventually remove your socks and clean them.

Over size skimmer. I've done this many times in the past. I used to think it's a certain brand which cause poor performance. What I've learned is, these oversize skimmer don't perform consistently. Meaning, when there isn't anything to skim, they will idle and will only skim when it "detect" nutrient in the water. The next time you see your BB idling, feed your tank and you should see it skim again. For these reason, I prefer a good match or a little lesser rating to my actual water volume.

These are solely my opinions. Hope it answered your questions.

Thank you, Nate.

Thanks for the input..I do feed my tank pretty heavily and my skimmer is never idle. I have a few sps frags and color is good and acceptable but not like you had...Just thinking of what else to try. I dont have any ugly algae or anything like it. I think this is because my skimmer is huge and i have barebottom with tons of flow. I did recently get some hydra 52's and perhaps it will be awhile until they start to color up better. Oh well good thing this a patience hobby ;-)
