Hello everyone,

You all have my sincere apologies for not updating in FOREVER! As most who read this thread know... we run a retail reptile store and breeding facility here. Our 4000+ sq ft reptile collection has been TONS of work this year. A high demand for our animals as well as personel problems have prevented me from doing very much reef stuff.

As mikelucky stated... the tank is doing fine. I've had my battle with aiptasia and a severe valonia bubble algae problem but everything is getting back to normal. The wood trim on the tank still remains unfinished. I've been waiting for our new reef section in our shop to be complete and kink-free so that we can do all of the wood finishing at once. I set-up a small room in our shop to hold about 500 gallons of reef life and of course... it has been a real project also.

In the process of building the reef section we decided that we would become a Deltec dealer due to the fact that the product is great and rarely seen in retail stores. Because of this decision I also decided to remove the Euro-Reef RC500 from this plywood tank and use it on our live rock curing vats for the store. It has been replaced with a Deltec AP902 with a automated self cleaning head which I will post photos of soon... I PROMISE!

I hope all is well with you all and the few plywood projects that have resulted from this thread have been sucessfull!

Happy Holidays... I'll post more soon!

I must say thank you for sharing. I was looking into purchasing a glass tank of these dimensions but that was crushed by the cost. You have inspired me to attempt my own build and not settle for a smaller tank.

My Dimensions will be adjusted to 96x36x30 but I will start my own thread in the coming months. I do have questions though.

How much Cloth and Resin did you use in total?

Do you think that I could use the traditional Euro Bracing technique using dimensional lumber like a 2x6 to eliminate the canter brace/Rod that you have used? I would like to have as much open space as possible. I guess that I could also make a 2x6 rim and add a 2x6 cross brace every two feet and still have enough space for lighting. would that be a better plan structurally?

That's all I have at the moment but I have no doubt tere will be more...............

I would love to see updated pics but understand that you are busy.

Killer build and thanks again for taking the time to share.

Hey there

Hey there

My name is Tristan and your tank is looking awesome I have recently got into the hobby and I have a 55 gal. Tank I have had it for about 6 or 7 months now. I don't have alot in it but I have started putting in corals and it seems to be getting pretty addictive as I was surfing through the site I stumbled on the diy section which is probably going to be my favorite because I'm such a diy kinda guy. I never knew of a wood tank just the very thought of it makes me want one being that I'm a carpenter by trade. My question is. Is it more or less expensive than a glass tank and what are the pros and cons

Do you realize that this thread is 4 years old....

That being said as someone who knows the OP, he took this tank down as he is focused on his Main business which he mentioned earlier. The Tank was still strong and holding water when it came down 6 months or so ago. As far as cost, overall it can be cheaper than buying a glass tank this size, but as you can see by going through the thread, there is a ton involved.

I would suggest you read the thread from the start, follow his process and I am sure you could make it work. I am not sure if he even frequents RC anymore and thus the reason I am commenting.

HTH,

Bobby
