billy - how did you go about getting the "new" RC? i'm interested in adding it to my "mix" but am not sure how to make sure i'm getting the latest formulation. is there a packaging change? or a serial/batch number of some sort to stay above? do you know of any online retailers that would reliably send the latest batch?

I can't say for sure Tony. I think the old has pretty much been used up.

I suspect by now, most of what you buy is the new. :)

Epsom salt? Why use that?

Epson can be used short term to raise magnesium without many concerns.

thanks Billybeau--I believe my pH probe might need adjusting since its been about 2 years in the sump:eek2:

It is my understanding that epsom salts are not a concern unless running a dsb in the display tank or a very old sand bed that has not been maintained----like my pH probe;)

If it has been in the sump for two years, it probably needs replacing.

pH probes are generally good for 18 to 24 months tops before needing replacement. :)

Yes it does, but it takes alot. Short term use is no problem. But continued long term use of just Epsom could be a problem.

This is why Randy changed his formula to add Mag flake. :)

I believe that could be a problem in sand beds over 2 inches in depth?

There is no way to know for sure. There was a packaging change that occured at the same time. The "new" has been in production since early March. However, there is planty of old in circulation, especially with retailers and distributors who may not properly rotate their stock, or who buy large quantities just a few times per year, you may see the old package for quite some time.

The use of magnesium chloride helps keep the ionic balance closer to seawater. The substrate depth likely doesn't matter much.

I know info has just been released, but has anyone seen a specs on the Brightwell Aquatics Salt?
I'd be very, very wary of a salt from Brightwell. Chris Brightwell has demonstrated a certain ... hrrrrrmmmm ... strained understanding of marine chemistry with products like kalk + 2, made of calcium hydroxide (kalk) + magnesium hydroxide + strontium hydroxide . Apparently, the company is either a.) unaware that magnesium comes out of solution in high pH (and the kalk ensures that the magnesium will come out of solution following Brightwell's instructions) or b.) simply doesn't care that its product is goofy. Neither situation is, IME, good.

The product listing at MD.

I am going to start a new 90gal in a few weeks and wanted to know if the people here like RC or seachem reef salt better. I have only used tropic marine pro in my other 2 tanks and my LFS is not carrying it anymore only RC and the seachem and I can't decide which one to use.

Thanks Billybeau1 the RC is about $10 cheaper than the seachem. I'm going to pick some up tommorrow to start mixing with the tropic marine I have left.

IO salt is 10 bucks for an 50 gallon bag at Lucky Ocean, if you are in San Francisco, ca.
It is a really good deal, dr smith has 200gallon 51 bucks before shipping. Have you tried this salt? Bill just gave out the unofficial nasty results on the new IO salt.

Has anyone had any problems with the Red Sea Coral Pro salt? I have been having mixing problems in that it remains cloudy after 24 hrs of using my power head to mix the salt. It seems to have gotten worse, the closer to the bottom of the container I got. I am using R/O water, and have replaced all the filters so I don't think it's source water quality. I even tried putting the salt in the containers 24 hrs prior to mixing, and just letting it sit to dissolve, but still milky white. Any ideas?
