Well as i continue along in my build of my 75 gallon i keep running into the same problem. Which Hallide COmbo is good for its price? Which lih=ght has a decnt price that wont cost me an "arm and a leg" and one that is reliable? Anyone know any light fixtures(meaning one that had the relfector hood/cap ballasts and bulbs with it) that are at a decent price and are good? Keep in mind that its for a 75 gallon tank that is 48"...im trying to get a 2 bulb hallide with either t-5s or t-12s!

What are you willing to spend Aaron? I'm assuming you're referring to Quonnie's? Honestly I don't think you're going to find anything like what you want for less than $150!

Like we've told ya..it's not a cheap hobby bud. One of the pcs of equiptment in reefing you DON'T want to cheap out on is lighting.

Yeah ik im jsut trying to find something thats worth while...are the oddesy* lights any good? Or what about retro hanging kits?

The Oddysea brand is a bit less than desirable...comparable to the Fishneedit brand. People use them but I can't imagine them lasting to long and I've heard/read of ballast issues.

Re: retro kits...sure there are plenty to chose from. I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "retro hanging kits." You can certainly build a canopy to house the rk and it could be mounted directly on top of the tank, or you could make a canopy that is suspended or hung.

Yea that's an awesome price for an awesome fixture...alas..not the mh combo he wants or the price tag lol.

Unfortunately I don't think Aaron is going to find the fixture he wants for $19.99 ;)

I have offered my MH's with Phoneix bulbs and even offered to drive them to Syracuse but he refuses to buy them from me when I am selling them for what I paid for just the bulbs and I am throwing in a brand new phoneix bulb.

Here's my two pennies. I have a odysea halide pc actinic combo and before ever even having a coral I had to replace one o the ballasts for the halides and just a few months later the second one went. Halides are expensive to replace and run bulbs for this hobby of any kind are expensive so my recommendation is to save up and go with LEDs have a look at the mh vs led par reading thread. For 1/4 of the energy cost, non existent bulb replacement costs and the fact that for just a little bit more cash you could get LEDs I would say scrap the halide combo and go LEDs. I am in the process of doing so my self, and when I do if you still want/need the fixture you are looking for I will sell mine to you for the cost of the two icecap ballasts I replaced.....250.00

Sincerely,
Dex

It is tough to find a "cheap light" that will do what you want. Do it right from the beginning. If you want to go really cheap buy a bunch of the 10w Aquamed 50/50 CF bulbs. They are cheap.
Honestly, Find a used 48 inch Current USA Outer Orbit 2x150W 10K HQI-MH w/ 2x130W Dual Actinic & 6 Lunar Lights and that will hold you over till you can get a good LED. For a little over $600 you can get 2 x 120W Reefkoi Evolution LED.
