A little help

James, I have about 30 pounds in my current tank. It is OK. Same as Marco in my opinion. Best of luck with the new setup.

Thanks John. Was rock decent size? I'm thinking if its small just using epoxy to glue a few together. For that price 20-30 lbs as base rock cant hurt.

I've been thinking about getting some new dry rock also. Does one particular rock have more anerobic capacity than another? (Ex: Fiji vs. Bali). Sorry for the hijack.

I believe they have an overall different look to them, they will all pretty much support large colonies of bacteria to do your bidding, but will each have a slightly different look and a little different weight/density. I say buy for looks, as long as its porous and not lace rock you should be good.

What about caribsea dry rock that lfs's sell. Would it support beneficial amounts of anerobic bacteria once its been cycled or is it best used as a paper weight? As you can see from my pictures in the other thread, looks aren't as important to me as the rocks capacity to support the most anerobic bacteria. I see alot of rocks being sold that look pretty but lack body. I can't really see the benifit of that type of rock in a reef. Am i over analyzing?

Theoretically, you would want the rock that was lighter, because it would indicate a higher porosity than the heavier one of the same size. However, you can go too far with this and have something that is all air, that would be hard though.

Its too bad none of the local fish stores don't sell any quality dry rock. I guess i will have to place an order and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for your help josh and sorry for the highjack james.

James, I requested larger pieces and they accomodated me. I also believe Marco Rocks will be at NERAC.

I used fiji rocks from Marco Rocks when I upgraded to my 180, along with some live rock from my old tank. I was very surprised at how light they were for their size. I got some really nice pieces from them. I have been very happy with them. They are scheduled to be at NERAC.

I have heard nothing but good things about Marco rocks, I will probably use them in an eventual upgrade in the future.

James, you can create some realy great rock formations when you epoxy the rock dry, that is another great thing about it. I epoxied mine and then after it dried cured it and it came out great.

Welcome back James! How big of a tank are you using this time?

Creepycrawlerz over at MR makes custom dry rock in a lot of cool shapes/formations.

Hey Eric, one little phone call from Justin and I'm back. Looking for a 150, 72x24x20. Not sure the guy is gonna sell it to me yet. He's trying to sell his whole setup first. I'd like a 180 but I dont think I can get it into my basement.

James,

Let me know when you get the tank? I have live rock for you, it's actually the rock you gave me when your 150 blew. I have pieces in a bin in the shed but I will take them out and put them in my refuge so it should be ready to go when you need it. Also have a few frags to get you started, sps, zoas...

Welcome back.

-Walter

Thanks guys. Walter I have alot of prep work before I actually setup. It's gonna be an in wall with the tank and sump in a small room. I wont be cramped under a stand for a change. Lots of planning this time. I'm gonna take my time and have fun with it. I would like to actually have tank setup late summer, so hold off on that LR in the sump. I will definitly let you know as I progress.
