I did get the time to look at your tank thread and it's looken very nice. You've put alot of time any money in that baby!! Nothing but the best for that system. Good work and enjoy.

piercho, First off, Thanks for the kind words!!
WEst system epoxy was used. I also used fiberglass cloth on all interior surfaces as well the top perimeter of the tank. I also used pigments in all layers of epoxy. Then I put two coats of clear over that.

Thanks Jamie-

its starting to come together slowly....

anyway your tank is truely an inspiration..... amazing thought and time you put into that tank!

what type of skimmer do you plan on building?

thanks!

Nick

Nick, I plan on biulding a beckett injector style skimmer. I'm hoping to incorporate a few designs that I've seen and like and create a descent skimmer. I'm pretty sure on design as I have it drawn out. I'm sure somethings will change as biulding begins. We'll just have to wait and see what is created.:) I'm just hoping it works!!! :)

There always has to be a catch:rolleyes: ;)

Hey I thought I was gonna have to change the fish list for you today. I was feeding the tank and all a sudden a big splash..........
Out flies this pink object..... as I followed it through the air I thought to grab it but I never....... then splat..... there lies a barlett's. I qiuckly grabbed it and threw it back in, but never saw it again for a few hours. It just now reappeared, geuss it's headache's gone. Which I'm sure was a good one cause it completely cleared the overflow then came to a "dead" stop on the concrete floor about 6 feet below. Man of all the times I wish I had a camera in my hands this for sure was one of them.

haha, well atleast it survived for you.....

maybe you should try and box in your top to prevent this from happening again....

Nick

Jamie, I've had the same thing happen 3 times with my Bartletts. The first time I found out too late. The second 2 times I got lucky and returned the fish to the tank before it was too late. One of the times one of them had actually landed into a pile of salt creep next to the sump. These occurences only happened the first couple months that the Bartlett's were in the tank. Hasn't happened since in about a year now. So I assume that as they become more comfortable with the tank they are less likely to jump ship.

Nick, for the amount of times something like this has happened, the box would be far more a pain then a benifit.

Travis, I hear you on new stock sometimes being jumpy. As I've checked around the tank a few times when I thought a fish was missing. I did lose a christmas wrasse to this.

This time though I sorta thought it was more a case of a little to excited to recieves it's daily food. I still wish I caught it with the camera. :)

Hi Jamie, any more recent full-tank pictures? You're tank is my inspiration to do a wall-to-wall (6 or 8 footer) plywood tank in my basement.

Jaime,

First off: Amazing setup! Best plywood tank I have ever seen.

I may have missed it, but how did your budget work out for this project? Do you find the results were worth the time and effort as opposed to purchasing a manufactured tank?

Also, How smooth is the epoxy? Can you easily scrape off coraline or nuissance algae from the finished epoxy?

tia,
Joe

Aquaduck , Sorry no more updated shots. IT looks the same to be honest, perhaps a bit more color. Things are starting to grow though and expect it to be worth taking new shots in about 3 months. Good luck with it if you take on a project like this. Feel free to pm me and we could chat via phone when it's time.

Joe, Thanks Man, I did safe most bills from this project but to this date havn't sat down with a caculator. Thank goodness I'm sure. ;) It was a huge project and I suppose if one had the money sitting around, a manufactured tank would be easier. Though I've never seen one like it and would expect the cost to be huge. This was my first attempt at epoxy work so you can image it's not perfect. I'd expect glass smooth is possible but this isn't. With that said I have no complaints.

Jamie,
did you laminate the glass together yourself? If so, how is that done. TIA.
One thing with the fiberglass tank is you can hope that it will last decades and weather siesmic shock fairly well. With glass, the joint fillets seem to let go over time and the halides can cause the ABS rims to give up before even a decade. You look and how its done at public Aquariums and every big tank is FRP. I'm getting older and have no intention of moving again in this lifetime. I hope the tank I put in this house will be my last so I'm really looking hard at FRP for its durability.

Hey Howard, The glass was laminated by professionals. I don't think I'd tackle that one. :) The glass shop I dealt with had it done and I'm very happy with it.
I'm hoping I get decades out of it. :) Though it really doesn't look as big as it once did, so perhaps I won't need it forever. ;) OH boy I better not start traveling down that road just yet.:p
I really think the best part of this style tank is the custom options are mostly unlimited. So creative minds can do some pretty need things regarding design. Hey whats FRP stand for

Hi Chris, Not really much has happened. I have started to get some decent growth and the colors are starting to look like the old tank now. The fish list is pretty much the same. I have been dealing with a few different algae issues but they appear to be on the decline as the system matures.
I've also finally plumbed my water change system. Now I just open/close a couple valves and water that was removed is replaced with new SW. I still manualy remove old system water, but it's sure nice that I can replace it so easily now.
I've added a couple more streams as well. Other then that I've been pretty lazy. :) I still havn't completed the sitting room. Last weekend we put together the material list. So it's just a matter of getting my butt in gear. :)

I'd hate to even geuss how long it took to biuld the tank to completion. I had a few things going on in my life at the time that required me to take a few breaks in the process. Sorry I'm not that helpful. I would suspect a person could complete it in a months worth of weekends if he/she had a good plan along with decent diy skills. Part of the issue for us was that fact we designed these system to work for us and that reqiured alot of beer nights just to hash out the different concepts we wanted to include in the tanks. I'm glad its behind us now. :)
