A. Percula vs Ocellaris

I am torn about which species to get next week. I always thought that the Percula was the brighter orange with better color patterns, but now I am being told that the Ocellaris is the brighter orange.

Which one do you recommend and why? I really want vibrant coloration and good personality.

From the research I've been doing, it seems that the only differences are the number of dorsal fin spines, the eyes, and the black patterns around the white bars.

money is not a concern... just want the best for my system.

thanks guys and gals :D

Well, just from personal experience, my orange ORA mated pair of ocellaris(mostly the female) chased my new addition (a b/w ocellaris) out of the tank where its mummy was found a week later... Needless to say I won't be getting those again (exchanged them for store credit). Hope it helps; I'm sure others will give their experience.

It is 100% personal preference. I have one pair of ocellaris and two pairs of perc's. Normally the orange is a brighter tangerine color in perc's, but there are many exceptions to that rule. As far as personality goes, it can vary from fish to fish. Not necessarily different between the species.

That's because it was unreasonable to expect a mated pair of clownfish to accept another clown in their territory. Please do your research before buying fish in the future.

Here's a picture of my Ocellaris female. She's captive bred, but I'm not sure of the source (I think she's local.) The pair has always had a vibrant orange coloration and plenty of personality. IMO either species makes an excellent pet.

Here is one of my pairs. They are not the usual clowns. The female is an Onyx A. percula and the is an A. percula X A. ocellaris F1 hybrid
If you can find them, Onyx A. percula are beautiful.

I have a pair of ocellaris that were very sweet until they began hosting my bta's, they are territorial now. I have an onyx percula that is very timid and sweet. I have a b/w ocellaris that is bold, friendly and hogs food. I think you'll be happy with any of them, they are all vibrant and have pretty nice personalities. Then again I am easy to win over because I owned a rather mean maroon.

Yeah, they are truly a cool pair.

Personally, though... Onyx, snowflakes, picasso's, etc... just not my thing. They look really cool and are quite beautiful, just not my thing.

When I was reading up, I read that ocellaris would be less aggressive than the percula. So I chose an ocellaris, rather than a percula. My ocellaris does not give my other fish any trouble what-so-ever, but, being captive bred, she does try to bite me. She is very bright tangerine orange, however.

I've seen "naked" ocellaris; they are truly tangerine orange. You'll probably enjoy either species. Good luck.

I went with a bonded pair of A. Perculas today. They are being shipped out Monday and I should get them Tuesday morning.

I am giddy with anticipation. It's going to be like Christmas Morning on Tues!

good choice, true percs are more apt to accept non-natural anemone host and in less time, also H. crispa are a natural secondary host. A. ocellaris host are the most difficult to keep and or find.

Here they are in 2004:

The Occellaris started out brighter but ended up less so.

That is exactly why I chose the Perculas. From the people I spoke with, most said that Ocellaris are brighter as juveniles, but darken over time. Plus, under intense lighting such as Halides, the Ocellaris can "sun tan" and get darker making the Percula the choice I wanted.

LOL!! it took me over an hour to find my camera! I didn't see that you already made your choice! :) good choice btw!!

^LOL... Thanks though! you confirmed my choice and made me feel even more confident that I made the right one!

thanks!!!

(sorry for that lost hour, but at least you know where your camera is now! :D )
