For those looking to obtain chloroquine, it is now available.

The veterinary pharmacy I use just hired a vet to review photos and symptoms. If Cryptocaryon or Amyloodinium is in the differential, a script will be written and the medication mailed. It can only be obtain with a script in the US and Canada.

They are offering it in 10 gm and 25 gm sizes. It will treat 250 or 625 gallons at the 40mg/gal or 10 mg/l dosing schedule.

It is dosed once. No water changes. Lights turned down. No testing. Safer than quinine. Removed by carbon or UV light.

You may be able to purchase other items such as Baytril.

Sweet! I plan on treating all infected fish with CP from now on. F poisoning the water with copper and then hoping the fish can outlast the parasite under such conditions. It makes much more sense to me to treat with an actual medication. In the future I will be trying to acquire infected fish so I can specifically target them with this medication and publish the results on Reef Central. I feel this is the only way to prove CP's worth.

Edit: Even though I've never tried it, I also think tank transfer is an excellent alternative to copper. Outrun the parasite's life cycle. I like it. That also makes good sense to me.

Good info, thanks. I assume any vet can write the Rx; I'm sure mine would if I just asked. BTW: I admit I'm still in the dark, but chloroquine isn't considered "reef-safe" is it?

I treated for 28 days.

does this kill biofiltration on LR?

It didn't affect the bacteria living in my sponge in QT. I went 28 days with no WC and 0 ammonia.

I would love to see someone acquire a medium size Blue Hippo or PBT with full blown ich spots all over, then treat it with CP. Document it with good pictures and whatever relevant info.

Its a small sample, but if CP really does consistently work well against ich, this would do everyone a world of good.

You actually make some excellent points. I admit using CP on my PB Tang didn't scientifically prove a thing, since treatment started after she had already been in copper for over a month and after all her white spots had disappeared. I was just desperate not to lose her.

The next fish I treat with CP I plan to document exactly as you suggested, photos and all, start to finish. Coincidentally, I'm going to be moving closer to your neck of the woods (Monroe) in May so if you hear of anyone nearby who has an Ich infested s/w fish, but doesn't want to deal with it, let me know. I'll work out some kind of deal with them.

As far as its efficacy - it was all the rage for curing Crypt back in the early 1970's when it was sold as Marex by Aquatronics...at high doses, it kept your tank algae-free as well, which was a boon to us back then (grin).

I was told it was only available by prescription, even in veterinary use. Yes your vet could sell it to you. Though I do not believe that it is commonly used in the States since malaria is not endemic.

I also dusted off my Herwig - handbook of drugs and chemicals used in the treatment of fish diseases. It was published in 1979. What do you know, Chloroquine was right there for treatment of ectoparasites. I really don't think that the use of chloroquine is expermental, for those that continue to doubt it and stick with treatments like hypo and tank transfer that have no effect in eradicating organisms such as Amyloodinium.

I also appears from reading very old literature that marex could have been ineffective due to under dosing.

For all of these diseases where the fish could be dead in hours, you should have the med on hand. Something to think about.

I do have copper and formalin on hand. Some fish are in copper treatment now. Several died even after a week into treatment I guess from stress and lack of appetite. Now three other fish I had in quarantine for the past month, which were from a healthy long established tank, have ich! These are the ones that I want to use the chloroquine on. I will start them in copper and hope to get the chloroquine soon.

I am so stressed out and sad over this. It takes a lot to stress me out and get me sad too. I love my fish.

Velvet is the reason why I Believe in treatment over observation. By the time velvet shoes its face it is often too late. Ich is usually not the rapid killer and you often have time to treat. The problem is, you have no idea what you are bringing home.

From what I've gathered on WWM, it is not reef safe but for FOWLR use it is much safer than copper.

It is best that when purchasing from a vet that you buy the powder form. It is easier to weigh and dose. It also lacks the filler that you find in the pills. It also goes into solution much easier. I also brought in some pills from Canada years ago that did not work. So be careful where you are buying from.

There is a guy off of ebay selling his stock of Cp that he bought from the place online that sells it by the kilo(I forget).

There is also another business that sells their CP for fish on ebay, but it's $$$

Good info, getting any pill into proper suspension is really tough. I'm ready to try CP for the 1st time. A little LFS special ordered a Golden Semilarvatus BF and it has a case of crypto. I pick him up tomorrow.
