A Reef in the Sky

I'll answer for Andrew since he's probably busy taking care of his tank! According to the Zeovit method, they recommend running carbon passively (NOT in a reactor) and kneading the carbon daily. Zeovites (people who use Zeovit, I guess) feel that too much carbon activity is detrimental so that is why they recommend passive carbon usage. When I was running Zeovit I put the carbon in a bag at the top of my Zeovit reactor, since the reactor only ran 50% of the time, and I just used less carbon than recommended. I seemed to have good results.

wow, thanks for the detailed explanation. ill be running full zeovit too. bob never mentioned anything about an advantage on running carbon passively. I even asked him explicitly if i could run carbon in a reactor. the only thing he said was that if you'll be running carbon in a reactor while using the zeo method, you would have to use 50% of the recommended amount of carbon for your tank as per zeovit recommendations. of course ill be using KZ carbon as andrew is also using atm.

Hi all and sorry for the delay, been a busy last two weeks

Looks very nice! I am surprised that you don't have a media reactor for the carbon. I don't know if you stated anything about that yet.
Hadn't really planned on getting one but have been looking into it.

+1 ... why do you boil the carbon?
I read that boiling is best as the hot water will release any air from the fine channels inside the carbon to make it more effective.

I would gladly buy a chiller if I could import that kind of weather to Chicago :)
lol!! The windy city... right??

+2 on the carbon/media reactor... relatively cheap and would probably be more effective then hanging the carbon in the sump. Looking GREAT though!!!
Cheers, I haven't finalized my carbon placement just yet. It is convenient though :)

wow, its finally done cycling! +1 on the question as to why you dont have a media reactor for your carbon :) nonetheless, tank's looking great!

congrats andrew :)

Thanks Vic, I see you have been answered over in the Zeovit forum.

hi andrew this is warm regard, if you mainly to keeping sps attention more about Kh, that good rang round 8~~10Kh. accroding to about words ,known you used zeovit system, the zeovit article said that it able to down of Kh quickly, so cautious handled
wish you all of successful for your RT!!
Thank you for your advice. Yes, a stable KH is very important

Wow, very clean set up.
Cheers

Thanks boss... from what I know that is all spot on! Cheers

brilliant effort!
10/10

Okay, well that explains it. I'm old-school I guess and don't know too much about the Zeovit method (other than the basics). What about carbon is detrimental using the Zeovit method?
They recommend using carbon in the Zeovit method

I see you have been answered in the Zeovit forum. I asked Bob and Alexander a while back and that is what they recommended. I like being able to kneed the carbon because I wasn't able too in my previous tank.

Stunning build!
Thank you

One of the best I've seen!
Thank you very much

Day 27 Update

Time for an update and of course... pictures!!!!

All appears to be going well so far

Corals:
I have transferred all corals over from my old tank during the past 2 weeks and they appear to be adapting well. Placement is not final just yet. No SPS have been bought yet since I've been away and no new shipments have arrived.

Fish:
Two clown-fish and one Pacific cleaner shrimp from my old RSM tank have been transferred. I also placed an order around 3 weeks ago for x6 Bartlett Anthias from Hawaii!! They are now in the tank and appear to be doing well. Personally I feel it was a little early to add such a number of fish but the distributor was in Hawaii at the time so I placed an order, just in the nick of time. Been very careful not to overfeed so far. Anyhow, all fish are eating and enjoy their specific hiding places amongst the rocks.

Skimmer:
After some initial troubles (mainly mis-understanding on my behalf) I am very happy with it's performance. Sooooo quiet too!

Live rock:
All appears to be good. I was a little concerned after the first week but the introduction of the tangs has helped greatly keeping it all under control. I'm pleased the with rock work in front of the overflow as it provides plenty of hiding/resting places for the fish.

Pictures: A big thanks to Shaggss (fellow RC member) as he has lent me his new DSLR camera for a few days!! I've got to get me one... Thanks boss!!

Tomorrow is the first water change (5-10%) plus a 50% change of zeolites. Water tests will be carried out before and after.

I haven't had a chance to hook up the ATO system or automatic dosing yet. Will also need to dismantle my old tank too.

Thanks for looking

I think you're ready for some acros Andrew! Do you have any lined up?

BTW Dudester was kind enough to lend me his Red Dragon and I'm pleased to say his runs very cool compared to mine. Needless to say there was a problem with mine and I'm working with a LFS to get it resolved.

Room Layout & Background

Checking the tank measurements will fit the room
RoomView5.jpg

The next challenge was to decide what background colour to have?

Black, Blue or nothing? Much thought went into this as the tank will only be 26" deep and I wanted to achieve a perception of "depth" and it must not clash with the cabinet colour. I therefore elected to go with blue, but with a 'twist'.

This is what I came up with.
BackgroundBlue5.jpg

Next was to see how it looked on the tank whether it would look acceptable with the blue cabinet.

The end result.

The background will be custom built but I have recently been having some trouble finding someone who can make it. It will be a lot harder than I thought. :sad2:

V1,

There's an easier way to achieve the same look of the background you are wanting. I used foam board that I got from the local home improvement store and attached it to the wall behind the tank. This gave me the depth and 3D look I wanted. I painted it a solid color (blue) and the lighting gave me the color variation you are trying to achieve. If you would like I can post a picture of it. hth

Superb design and build

Superb design and build

V1,

I would love to say that you have an excellent setup and everything were so well-planned to the details. btw, I am also from HK and would like to share some of my thoughts on your tank. Have you think of upgrading your Tunze wavemaking with Vortex MPs or the "Oceans Motions" closed loop system? That may eliminate the power cord from running above the tank.

I currently have a 3-sided tank dominated with SPS and am thinking of upgrading to a 4-sided island when I move to my new home. I am still thinking of alternatives to hide all the circulation pumps. Maybe you can give me some ideas.

Great work and wish you all the success on reefkeeping!

Fred

The system looks really nice and well build too. One question, are you gonna put more LR or nope?

Thank you... no more live rock will be added. Only small pieces that maybe attached to new corals.

For sure, got some yesterday!! Glad to hear about the RD pump. :D Any idea what the problem was? What size return line(s) do you have connected to it?

You have a beautiful tank :)
What is your bulb combination?

Thank you very much.

ooops! didn't realize it was a finished product. Very beautiful!
Thank for your input. I had heard of using a light behind but I'm was limited for space. Any pics or links your background?

Looks awesome Alpha! Really digging the scape and can't wait to see it all filled up with some sticks.
Hey Mav, hope your well buddy and the tank is blooming! Pulling down the RSM these next few days :sad1:

Man, sincere congratulations! So far, drooling material!
Thank you... got some pictures of the new additions. Stay tuned

What a amazing job! Your tank is trully beautiful, congratulations!

Are you a pilot?
Thank you Sir.... and yes

Hi Fred and thank you for your comments.

I have a good buddy here in HKG urging me to get Vortechs (especially since the new release of the wireless models). Personally I would love to get them but not I'm not 100% sure they will work how I want them too.
From my reading, research and experience they appear to be really good for cube tanks, not long tanks like mine since they don't have a long range, unlike the Tunzes. It would require me to have at least one the back wall however there is no space available behind the tank.
I'm not after a wave action due to the fact that it is a rimless tank. There is no doubt though, the appearance/cleanliness on the glass is much better.

Let me know if your ever in HKG.

Regarding your new tank, I'll draw up some ideas and send them to you.

Cheers

I'd really like to see it!
+1

Finally... SPS corals

Wow!!... 4 weeks already and I am amazed how simple the KZ method has been so far. The past 2 weeks have flown by so I wasn't able to monitor the water parameters as closely as I would have liked. Anyhow, that will happen over these next couple of days.

With the help of the misses and my trusty laptop, I purchased some SPS corals from Indonesia and have placed them approximately to get a feel before securing. All corals were dipped with CoralRX before entering the tank. The lights have been raised to help acclimatize the corals.

Looking to increase SG/ppt over the next two weeks. Target is 1.025
The Alk is low and will also try to increase. Dosed 40ml Alk and 20ml Ca and this achieved an Alk of 8.0KH (Salifert) around 3 hours after. I will monitor Alk, Ca & Mg daily to fine tune dosing amounts.

Thanks for looking
