A Reef in the Sky

Thanks for the replies everyone!! Here is the camera info: Canon 550D

Amazing video, great job !!
Thank you :)

awesome video!! your tank looks amazing! so much space and so open... i love the background of the tank... it looks like your peeking over the edge of the reef into the great depths of the ocean... very well planned out! cant wait until those colonies get bigger!!
Really appreciate the kind comments Kyle. Glad you like the background.

Nice video!

I like the cameo by the anthias... hahaha!

I'll continue to think of fish you could add (other than the one's I've already mentioned). Since I don't have my large tank set up yet, I'll have to live vicariously through you for now... :)
Thanks, yeah... the Anthias love to be center of attention

Great great video, nice choice of music.

Can i ask what camera you used?

Mike
Hi Mike and thank you. Glad you like the music as it's very important to my videos. I used the video function on the EOS Canon 550D. Both lenses were used. The last coral was filmed using the Macro lense.

ALL of these wouldn't work in your tank... but here's a modified list of my favorite fish in addition to the ones I already mentioned (also I've removed some so this doesn't take up a whole page):

> Either a Niger Trigger or a Blue Chin Trigger: It looks like you may be done with the "larger fish" selection, but I thought I would at least mention these. The blue chin is the smaller of the two, but both are considered "reef-safe" if you don't have any small shrimp or you can take your chances and introduce the shrimp first then the trigger. Plus, not many reef-tanks have triggers... so it would add something different.
> Regal Angel: Another larger fish, but had to mention it. Plus, being in HK, I would think that you would probably have good access to dealers of some healthy/juvenile Regals. But as with any Angel, they may nip at some stuff.
> Starry Blenny or Lawnmower Blenny: I have the Starry Blenny right now, and he is pretty awesome. Just have to make sure he gets plenty of vegetable matter to eat (whether it is growing on your rocks or provided in the form of nori or formula 2 flakes).
> Yellow-tail Damsels: you'd be surprised how nice a small group of these will make your tank look. Plus, and I'm talking about Chrysiptera parasema, these are one of the least aggressive (some consider a little shy) of the damsel family.
> Scribbled Rabbitfish (Siganus doliatus): nice-looking algae eater that can get quite big though. So maybe in your next UPGRADE!!! HAHAHAHAHA!

I might be going through an upgrade in a couple of months (still planting the seeds with my wife to get her to warm up to the idea)... so this is getting me all gitty.
Thanks once again for the info/ideas... personally I'm not keen on any triggers and any other tangs (except the Achilles, but I won't go there :hammer:). I see many regals angels here but the only angel that I want to get is the flame as you mentioned.
My previous tank had a yellow tail damsel and we were going to transfer it over but gave it away.
As for rabbitfish, I have always wanted to get the Magnificent Rabbitfish (Siganus magnificus). This is a real beauty IMO. Not sure if I have enough live rock though. I am very tempted to get one.

Oh... and I might be wrong (so someone please correct me if I am), but I noticed that you are dosing 40ml of Alk, and 20ml of Calcium... maybe its the additives that you're using, but I thought reef-building animals used these at the same rate.

I use supplements in powder form, and add them at roughly the same proportion (i.e., 3 tablespoons of each daily)... again, I could be completely wrong here, but just wanted to bring it up before you automate it.
Actually, thanks for bringing this up. It has been in the back of my mind since dosing began. I posted over in the Reef Chemistry section and the guys mentioned that it may depend on the salt you use (as it maybe contain high Ca) I'm using Reefers Best Salt (RBS).
Also, no long term problems with it... will monitor though.

inspiring :)
Cheers... means a lot!

again one of the cleanest tank I have ever seen! I acaully building a tnak like yours 40x20x12. My tank is a little smaller but I hope you don't mind, I'm going to try and copy you
Thanks for the kind words. No worries, go ahead and use any ideas. If you need any more info on anything, just ask.

great video, did you use a high definition camera?
Thanks, yes. The camera has HD video function built in.

Thank you

V1 - The next time you take the sump out to clean it, can you take a photo of how you disconnect the lines, etc? I'm looking to update and I would like to have a removable sump as I notice that certain spots in my current sump are detritus traps.
Sure Chris... no problems with the pictures. Basically I undo the 4 unions and I'm done. Depending how far I roll the sump out, some power plugs need to be pulled out. I will need to get a pump in skimmer section of the sump to help with detritus too. Only problem, running out of power sockets :eek1:

nice video bro!
may i know what is the title of the song you used?
Cheers... more videos to come.
Artist: Ryan Farish
Song: Pacific Wind

it's in the credits at the end of the video
You have a sharp eye boss!! Nothing gets past you!!

firstly thanks for rekindling the flame in me.. lost a lot of inspiration while not keeping up with this thread!

next, the hues of a royal gramma can be a great addition if you can get your hands to one, plus a pretty good chance of it taking over the island which you suggested.( easier if theres nice arc caves on it)

and yeah the hot camera which everyone is waiting for too
Glad your enjoying the journey. Thanks for the fish advice... will try to get one as the colours are great!

Camera......?
Sorry for the delay boss!

Beautiful Movie Andrew.

I bought yesterday Nikon D5000. I am not too good to make like what you captured. but i will try and post in my thread. (My 300G reef in Saudi Arabia). ;)

Cheers Jonathan... very true. It easy to get overwhelmed when there are so many pieces in front of you to choose from. :fun5:
As for rare, not sure... any ideas/choices?

You know V1, I have to keep in mind where you are located... Many of the corals you have available to you would be considered rare to us in the States. And some that we consider rare, you may see all the time. So, I would just reserve any remaining sites for something that pleases you....A nice deep colored efflo would look pretty hot in your tank though:fun5:

By the way, I just took my new point and shoot back for a refund as a result of your pictures and Video. :lmao: I'm about to get myself in trouble with either a Canon EOS Rebel T2i (name of the 550D here in the states) or a Canon 7D... I'm blaming it all on you.

You...are...so....Beautiful....to me, can't you see!

Now you just need to round out your fish selection, add a few thousand dollars worth of acan and chalice's and you'll be set.

Thanks SJ... good to hear. I will have a look.

That coral is certainly on my wish list as with many other reefers here in HKG.

As for the camera... good to hear. You will be happy with either one. Feel free to blame me as I'm half way around the world... but I'll lay low next time I'm in New York :worried:

Great work ,, can you explain to me how zeovit system work ? is it just make water clean or its feed corals and clean water ?
Well I am no expert with this method but you are generally correct but there is more involved. There is a link here in the SPS section discussing Zeovit.
Here is one that I used to gain a sound understanding Zeovit-basics

I'll PM you some other sites explaining the concept.

You...are...so....Beautiful....to me, can't you see!

hahaha... your a classic Clint...

I'll see what I can do :worried:

No need to be worried  You just helped push me over the fence. Sometimes I need a little help  Hey, If you ever have a lay-over at Kennedy, let me know. I'm five minutes away up the Belt and would love to show you my tank setup..

hope you read this in time buddy. ill be in hk till 27th. would love to drop by and visit your tank if you dont mind. pls pm me your addie if its ok with you and ill find time to drop by :) cya soon buddy (hopefully)!! :)

Must have been an easy Line Check if you are posting on here and not STUDYING!!!!!:eek::eek:
lol... it was fun!! :lol2:

V1 for how long did you ran your tank before you added the first coral?

Did you used live rocks and live substrate?
I added some Acans and Scolys on Day 14. The first SPS corals were added on Day 29.
Yes, live rock was used but not live sand. I soaked my KZ sand in RODI water for 2-3weeks before with water changes every 2-3days. I feel this helped greatly!

Glad you fell over the right side of the fence.
For sure, depending on what flight I do I either stay in Manhattan or Brooklyn.

Hey Vic, haven't heard from you :sad1: Not to worry, maybe next time!

amazing tank!!!!

Thank you very much.

Update & Pictures

I have been busy the past couple of days on the tank. Water change, replace Zeolites, Carbon, cleaning the skimmer and glass.

I am considering changing the Zeo reactor as it is not functioning how I would like plus it was very difficult changing the stones. Too time consuming plus messy.

Anyhow, I managed to pick up x2 more corals that I was after plus x2 clams. I also found a baby magnificent Rabbitfish (1.5") from the Maldives. Most of these fish for sale here are too big for the tank so I'm looking forward to watching him grow and settle into his new home.

Also, for the hawk-eyed among you, I also added another Tunze (6055). I need to tidy the cord up. So far, it is helping with the flow behind the island.

Now picture time

Thanks for looking. I'm also working on a new video so stay tuned...

hey where is that little fella hiding?

Great shots, looks like you'll have to give me a run down on the Rebel when you endorse me on the Profilux

V1, Your macro skills are Sick! Great FTS as well! Very....very nice.. I can't imagine what your tank will look like in a years time...

Glad you fell over the right side of the fence.

!

Canon seem to have the most bang for the buck in terms of stills and Full HD. No competitors right now. Cool on the travel.. Just hit me with a PM if you ever get the opportunity & some time... I can always come pick you up if you don't have wheels when in town..

Nice... looks like you got two Maxima clams (even though we didn't have a close look at the clams). I've got one nice blue Maxima, and then one multi-colored Crocea clam. They add a ton to the tank and you'll be surprise at how fast they grow if you keep the Calcium/Alkalinity stable... love the placement.

So where's the baby Rabbit fish???

Oh, and I LOVE the Coral #2... nice neon pink and green...
