A Reef in the Sky

Very kool thread I read the whole thing! Well mostly the pictures very neat and well thoughtout. You have inspired me to do the same kind of minimal rock work as you have in your aquarium.

What Corals?

I asked you guys sometime last year what coral books you would recommend for identification and hunbandry. So I got these...

Aquarium Corals by Eric H. Borneman
Corals Of the World by Jen Veron

Some light reading :reading:

Predominately I want this to be an SPS tank but I plan on having some Acans and Scolys too plus a couple of LPS. These will come from my current tank plus I hope to acquire some more over time.

This will be an ongoing process... but below is what I have in mind at the moment. Always learning...

x3 Birds Nest Corals (x2 Seriatopora Hystrix & x1 Seriatopora Caliendrum)

x2 Club Finger Corals (Stylophora)

x20-30 Various Acropora (branching, bushy, cluster, bottlebrush, finger & tables)

x3-4 Monipora (Digitata, Tuberculosa)

x2 Porites

x2 Disk corals (Fungia)

The reefing community here in HKG is rather spoilt (IMO) from the vast selection of corals and fish available. Most are corals are small/medium collonies so I will have to be extra careful when introducing them. Out of interest, here are some pictures of some corals for sale from various shops here. [Pictures are courteous of shop owners prior to sale]

So I'm really excited once the tank is up and running to buy some corals...

Just out of curiousity, how much do they charge there for colonies that size in the pictures?

Thanks. Good luck with it.

Yo Andrew how about an update? I want to see some teardrop Maxima clams and some nice LPS :)
Update soon Clint... Just letting everything settle down. One coral is not well... not sure why but otherwise everything else appears okay. Waiting patiently the arrival of some snails.

Most varieties of SPS are anywhere from $12 to $70USD. Scolys and Acans are slightly higher but reasonable.

V1 is it your background tank side made of acrylic?
No, it is a custom sticker which was made.

I don't know, I just watched that video and I think you and Sunny X have a really superb hand truck so you can wheel the same tank in and out of each others' houses. :p

You two must have been in the same aquascaping class. ;)

lol... thanks for the kind words. Sunny's reef scape inspired mine. He is a true master!

Sorry Clint, there's actually more of an update... :worried:

Corals:
I've been patiently observing and maintaining the reef over the last x2 weeks. Some corals have been moved around to assess any improvement in colour. Only one coral looks like it is not well but not sure why? Not enough flow, bleaching??

Maintenance:
I carried out some maintenance on the stand last week, due to some rust developing. Steel wool and some paint fixed the areas concerned.

Fish:
Added one new fish last week. One of the Bartletts developed 'Pop Eye' while I was away 2 weeks ago. He was also being picked on by another. Fortunately he appears to have recovered from the 'Pop Eye' and stays low in or near the rock work for most of the day. I try to spot feed him too as he rarely ventures out during feeding. Time will tell with what happens

CUC:
I really need some more snails which were delayed but hopefully they will be here within the next 2 weeks. The sand bed could do with a good clean however I'm resisting until the snails arrive.

Some pictures with x3 new corals I picked up today.

Thanks for looking

Yep, from that first pic, those clams look like Maximas to me... very nice. I actually just expanded my current collection. I already have a blue Maxima and Tricolor Crocea... just last Tuesday I added a purple Maxima and a green/black/white patterned Maxima.

They get addicting if you're not careful.

Tank looks great as always!

I'm sure it's been asked many times, but if you don't mind - what bulb combo are you using?

Also, you gotta clean that overflow! lol

Oh, and I'm REALLY jealous of your SPS prices.

Your tank is amazing. May you share some detail info of the above setting of the pipe? I means, which components you used.

Your design can remove the noise, is that the commerical product? or it's from DIY. Any reference for that 'removing noise' setting.

Thanks in advance.

Andrew, your tank Looks very good. Beautiful and clean look. I think you like coralline on your overflow area, if you clean it look more clean. I tell you I don't like coralline on any glass.

How do you maintain your calcium and Alkalinity? Are you using calcium reactor?

Andrew.

The water is crystalline!

Very beautiful Reef.

Do you intend to add more corals? I think this is great.

Congratulations!

Thanks heaps. I am happy with the clams so far and they are addicting. I will certainly look at getting some more. I have bought a top down photo box and should be picking it up next week so stay tuned for some pics!

Sure, no worries:

Sunrise/Sunset use both Blue + bulbs but it was mentioned earlier in the thread that I should change one of them for the KZ Fiji Purple. I have been delaying the change over as I may try the new KZ bulbs.
As for the overflow, I'm hearing you but was actually planning on leaving it. I am going to attach some corals to overflow so with time it will become more difficult to clean.
Yeah, the prices of corals are sweet. So too are the fish.

Thank you so much. Glad you like. A quiet overflow was very important to me and this style/system certainly delivers.
The pipes are known as CJ Standpipes and come from Chris at nautilusreef.com. He was extremely helpful and did a great job constructing them and advising me on other plumbing accessories. I control the flow but using the TUCV's and this allows me the adjust the water level in the overflow section. Therefore no waterfall effect. :celeb1:
Some more pictures from earlier showing everything.

I can fine tune the flow by adjusting the two centre TUBV's. It would be better to use ball valves as you can fine tune them easier.

Hope that helps.

Hi Syed, thanks for the kind words. As I mentioned above I don't mind the coralline on the overflow. I'm hoping the corals will hide it with time.

I dose daily ESV Bionic products. No calcium reactor.
Alk 35-40ml
Ca 20-25ml
Mg 10ml once a week (usually 3days before a water change)

It is super quiet and I have the option to adjust it will I want to. See the pictures above to help plus visit the website I posted as there are more pictures there.

You could do something like this, courtesy of nautilusreef. But I don't run the water as a low as this picture shows.

Hi Vic... thanks. I am happy with Zeovit so far. I am still using the basic four elements however will branch out into trying other products soon.
Sweet, looking forward to seeing it.

Thank you Sir!! Yes, more corals will be added plus a few more fish.

Update time... Day 100

Time certainly goes fast. Everything appears to be going fine with the tank and a carbon and water change are due over the next 2 days.

There will be a slight change in my dosing regime now as the tank moves into the second phase.

Start2: 0.2ml x2 daily
Zeo Food7: Mon/Thurs x3 drops
Zeo Bak: Mon/Thurs x5 drops
Sponge Power: Mon/Thurs x3 drops
ZeoZym: Sunday 1/4tsp alone in 1/2ltr. tank water
Coral Vitalizer: Tues/Fri/Sundays x5 drops

Snails/Peppermint Shrimp
Finally the snails arrived from the Florida Keys. What a journey they had!! I ended up getting the following however a couple of the Cerith snails didn't make it but hopefully the remaining can do the job.
Cerith Snails x40
Nassarius Snails x70
Peppermint Shrimp x1

New Toy

I picked up a camera accessory to help take top down pictures.
