A Reef in the Sky

Excuse me, I did not understand what he said. Know where I can buy online? I live in Brazil and can import from China or Hong Kong. Could tell the brand or company that manufactures?
Another PM sent. Thanks

PM sent. It comes from Hong Kong/China which is 220-240V

Great Tank, congratulations !!! Could you also please send me the details.
Glad you received the details. Thanks for the kind words in the PM

Hi Andrew,

Can you tell me how you do that?:reading:
Hi Ricardo,

My design revolved around trying to have a quiet overflow since the tank is in the living/dining area. I have x2 1.5" CJ standpipes which reduce in size to 1" after the bulkheads. I use x2 1" TUBV's (True Union Ball Valves) to control the flow rate and water level in the display tank & sump.

Having x2 1.5" drains is overkill for my tank and I therefore have both TUBV's half open instead of fully open. This reduces the water flow noise, stops any gurgling sounds and therefore reduces/stops any micro bubbles entering the sump.

I went with TUBV's instead of Gate valves because I couldn't find any gate valves that had unions both sides. This was important so the roll out sump idea could work.

Epic build. Nicest cleanest build I've seen so far! TOTM? Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the kind words... more updates on the way!

thx for video tips rotate ,

+1 , this is truely TOTM worthy !!!!

What species is the pink acropora?, my friend has a one and it is not a A. milliepora

That is a true A. millipora, with a digitate-corymbose growth habit. The related species, such as A. prostrata, with spreading branches at wider angles and A. spatulata, with finer branches and a corymbose to almost hispidose growth form are often sold as A. millipora.

I have been using Veron as a reference, but the issue is still a bit in the air, IMO. I understand why most people just say 'a milli'.

I say other similar species, I think that is named A. sotola or A. setola..., ¿maybe?, I don´t remember the name exactly

A. hyacinthus forms an open table, sometimes a plate, has cup-shaped radials and is not corymbose (doesn't form a flattened bush shape). I agree, they can look quite similar, especially in a foto and you may be right. I'm not convinced, though.. A. selago has fewer scale-like radials not in a rosette arrangement, is much finer in structure and resembles a scrappy-looking A. tenuis in my book! Also, the radials rarely touch, which in A. millipora is the case. There is A. vermiculata, as well, which looks more like A. tenuis, but is always brown, according to Veron.

As I mentioned earlier, the actual ID of some of these species is tentative and there may actually be more species to be seperated out from this group. If you compare the notes of Wallace and Veron, you will see that, although they originally worked on this group together, seem to be of different opinions at this point.

Thanks tntneon... I forget how much the corals have grown since I look at the day everyday. Taking pictures is certainly very valuable.
I thought the female was the out of focus fish?

Muito lindo, sucesso e boa sorte.

Very beautiful, successful and good luck.
Thank Fernando

Yes welcome...

That's some serious growth Alpha...the colors and PE are just insane...awesome job!
Cheers Mav... Your tank is looking great. Nice growth on those many SPS. I will be checking your thread out more often.

Beautiful !
Thank you sir

The acropora is A. selago...sorry :reading:

Acropora hyacinthus i say.:reading:

Interesting discussion guys and thank you for the input. I am not very experienced with identification however I always thought the pink/red Acropora on the island was a millipora. I can always take some more macro pictures.

On another note, some more exciting news to follow shortly... new addition. Coral or Fishy?? :D

You are making us very curious ... :D

oh , then she (the bartletts) was dancing a special dance for him ... intresting :D
I'm not a good fish ID'er as you see , i just assumed it because "she" 's got more orange on the head making her look very good :) , and i thought it was therefore the male ....

Hi Andrew,

I refer to the other from the growth pics. IMO is a pink Acropora hyacinthus.

That one on the island next to the green (we can see both on the Bartletts pic) i think is a millepora too.

In the Reef in the Sky 2 video, how do you get all the blue tint out of the video for true colors? Is there a setting on the camera? I can take good pics with my SLR camera in RAW, but not sure how on a video camera. thanks for any advice..

Hi i'm from singapore, love your tank thread and ideas. Would like to know did you get a reducer of 1.5" to link the standpipes to your 1" bulk head?

Spoke to chris from Nautilus that he is able to do a 1" stand pipes which i think if i were to get the 1.5" and add a reducer would be a better idea. So as to reduce any production complications as this would be his first 1" pipes. Whats your take on this?

Also did you get chris to ship it over to HK or you picked it up whilst you're in US stop over?

Yes, every evening around 8pm (as the lights dim) the Bartletts appear to gather for a meeting. Obviously catching up on their days outings. Very impressive to watch.

Hi Ricarado... oh ok. I understand. Thanks. These SPS corals are hard to identify.

Hi One Reef,
The video settings I use on the 550D camera are AWB (auto white balance), Landscape mode. This seems to work fine. I might adjust the white balance of some clips if it looks like it is needed but I rarely do. They seem to work out fine. iMovie does have a function to adjust white balance of clips if required.

Great video, I wish I could keep my sump that clean!
Hi strendo and thanks. I have just learnt that the Ehiem vacuum is a great way to suck up any stuff in the sump. Beats siphoning and getting a mouth full of water :eek1:

Hi eniram and thanks for the kind words.

I agree with Chris. I originally wanted to get x2 1" standpipes but after some discussions, 1.5" was decided upon. It does depend on your size of tank and how much water circulation you want but keep in mind the 1.5" standpipes/and bulkheads take up some room. :eek1:

Chris ordered all parts for me. Here is the exact part Reducing Hex Bushing 1.5" to 1"

These pictures might help.

I had originally planned to pick everything up in LA but due to roster changes couldn't. He sent them to HKG for me as I couldn't wait for my next trip and I needed the bulkheads and standpipes in hand to confirm the final plans.

Chris was very accommodating and very very helpful. He certainly went out of his way to help.

Hope that answers your questions

Wow, simply awesome.

Read your whole thread from the beginning, I can see why it is so deserving of being voted the thread of the month. You already got my vote for TOTM :D.

Your attention to detail is exemplary, excellent selection of corals...what a pleasure its going to be for you to watch those corals fill out. I'm sure you will keep us all updated with lots of pics.
