A Reef in the Sky

Update time

Well,

I could never find a small one,
I couldn't resist when I saw it,
I have been in love with it for a long time,
I thought it would look lovely in the tank,
I wanted the challenge,
I gave in....

But more about that shorty...

As mentioned in an earlier post, I needed to frag a coral due to it's growth. Here are the Frags (the two on the left side) on Day 1.

I wanted a little more colour so I got some of these beauties. They are doing well and eating well.

Still can't see him? Another picture

A FTS is required as I can't get a close picture of him... swims so fast!

Since the addition of these fish, my stocking plans have changed. I only really want to get x2 Gobies (for sand sifting) and that is it.

Those Squammies look obscenely good with the Barletts, Andrew. I'm continually amazed just how much better this tank looks every single time you tease us with an update. I'm thinking once we get to the 12 month mark you'll be keeping one of the very best tanks in the world. :)

Just beautiful! I've never regretted getting my A. achilles, even though adding other fish is very difficult, it is possible with patience. Just keep him well fed. Mine loves nori, as well as most flakes and pellets, but will literally eat anthing I throw in.

I've been thinking really hard about the last few big fish to add to my tank, but for some reason I had completely forgot about Achilles tangs. I've always had a passion for them, so I guess we'll see.

I love all the color the two different species of Anthias bring out! I had heard that Lyretail anthias were sometimes agressive to other species of Anthias, you'll have to let us know what happens over time in your tank.

Looking fabulous Andrew as usual! Good luck with your Achilles. I really miss mine. I agree with Kolognekoral above.. Keep him fed and soak the food in selcon or some other vitamin mix to ensure he has what he needs in his diet. Then, keep your fingers crossed. Also, I would keep the temp down.. If ich appears, the lower temp will slow the cycle and hopefully give him a better chance at building his immunity to it..

Thanks for the advice and illustration, will hunt for a reducing bush back here. Oh and where did you get your french cleat from? US or HKG?

Love the new addition... I'm torn between the powder blue and the achilles tang when I set up my upgrade... but with your background color, you definitely picked the right one.

So do you quarantine your fish before putting them into the tank, or are you "taking the risk" of putting them directly into the DT? I ask because I'm always interested in how people quarantine more difficult to keep fish like angelfish and certain tangs (like your achilles).

Course, if you don't quarantine, I don't blame you since I'm sure the fish you get have been through a lot less shipping stress (and therefore a lot less prone to disease) than those of us in the U.S.

Wow, simply awesome.

Read your whole thread from the beginning, I can see why it is so deserving of being voted the thread of the month. You already got my vote for TOTM :D.

Your attention to detail is exemplary, excellent selection of corals...what a pleasure its going to be for you to watch those corals fill out. I'm sure you will keep us all updated with lots of pics.
Thank you very much sir. Glad you liked the read. It's actually amazing how much the thread has grown.

More pictures posted and will continue to post.

eheh...i see a Acanthurus achilles :D

Gratz and be successful!:celeb1::celeb2::celeb1::celeb3::celeb1:
Thank you Ricardo

Oh, and the Achilles too of course... :D
Cheers n0rk! As usual I went looking at the many shops to my surprise saw the Pseudanthias squamipinnis. Always liked them but never see them in the shops. These ones are from Indonesia and there were about 50 of them. The day I picked up the Achilles, I was looking for some gobies.

Thanks for the kind words... greatly appreciated.

Thanks Kolognekoral. It is a big gamble but so far so good. He's been in the tank just over a week now. The first 2 days were tense as to be expected since he didn't eat and the Yellow Tang showed him who was in charge.
The first 2 nights were also interesting to watch as he was 'sussing' out how close he could get to certain rock structures which the yellow tang patrolled.

At the end of day 2 he started eating off the rocks and on day 3 he began eating Nori (Ocean Nutrition, all 3 flavours). He goes where he wants now and is actively swimming and eating with the others.

your tank is simply amazing andrew!!!
Thanks bagz!

Hi Alex... I agree, it's certainly a gamble. Time will tell. The misses has come across a Gem Tang and really likes the look of them but not the price!

Yeah, the Lyretail & Bartlett interaction will be interesting. So far so good but very early days. The Bartletts own the main rock structure in front of the overflow and the Lyretails have taken a liking to the island which I'm pleased about.

Hi Jonathan and thanks for the advice. I followed to Achilles and certainly learnt a lot. Fortunately we are starting to cool down here in HKG which means slightly lower tank temps and slightly high pH as I can open the windows.

Currently soaking the Nori in Kent Marine supplements. I'm hoping he will take some brine/mysis/flakes or pellets sometime soon. He loves to graze on the Nori though.

Thanks for the advice and illustration, will hunt for a reducing bush back here. Oh and where did you get your french cleat from? US or HKG?
Your welcome. The french cleats were purchased from a US company in Florida.

p.m. sent with my shipping info. I'll take both of those frags Sir Andrew!
Cheers Clint... they are on the way

I actually totally forgot about the background consideration. Glad I made the right choice. Unfortunately I am one who has to 'take the risk'. Since space is limited and this hobby has already taken a lot of room in this small apartment, I can't setup another tank. Not allowed too... what I would gice to have a fish room. All fish in the tank (except the clowns) have not been quarantined and I'm fortunate so far (just jinxed myself) with no losses. I believe, having good stable water parameters and plenty of hiding places is key.

Very true on the shorter shipping, I get most fish the day they land here in HKG so that must help. Also, through experience... I know which shops in the 'fish street' and HKG area are better for purchasing livestock.

Awesome tank!
Thanks mke07

Completely agree with you on the water paramaters/stability... I quarantine, but if you can't, introducing a healthy fish to a healthy system is definitely the next best thing.

Good luck with the Achilles... looks beautiful!

LOVE the stand! A roll out sump sometimes would be such a great convenience! LOL wish there was a fish street in Canada. Getting a collection such as you have would be a multi-year adventure.

Thanks for your understanding... Certainly a beautiful fish.

Cheers... yeah the HKG residents are lucky. I'm looking to go to Thailand to check out their fish area/street some time.

Away Time

Time has come to head 'down under' for a just over a week so it's the first time we will leave the tank. :worried:

A friend of mine will look after the tank for us while we are away. To ensure everything is conducted correctly and the tank is not over fed, I prepared everything in advance.

Dosing and feeding twice per day. Little containers filled with the correct amounts and Nori pre cut.

Instructions left with who to contact if a major problem occurs.
