A Reef in the Sky

Wow Andrew, it took me nearly 3 nights to read every post from the start, what a great read. great to see another maticulous Zeo tank. 2 questions i have:
1. i noticed with your pumps they're quite low to the substrate, what settings are they at so you're not getting a snow storm?
2. I also noticed you moved the pumps positions, do you do this often any theory behind it?

thanks in advance

Hi Andrew.

I have been lurking around in the background for some time now and have been following your thread for around 2 years.

As I am sure you know, your tank is highly regarded around the world and its tough to even find a forum that doesn't talk about it in some way.

I came about it when 'googling' reef tanks and saw the beautifully put together videos you made (and subsequently bought a substantial amount of Ryan Farish music!).

I was gutted for you after you moved the tank and sustained so many losses, but was very pleased to see you stuck with it. The tank is growing out really well now and beginning to take on some of that former glory that made it so popular. I love how clean and well planned out it is, and the minimalist scape is well suited to the modern look the tank gives overall.

I am not a big user of Reef Central, but pop in from time to time to see how your tank is going. I wish you continued success with it and will look forward to future updates.

P.S. Is the video 'reef in the sky 4' coming any time soon. It is overdue :-)

Kind regards

Greg

Love your tank. Stop teasing us with the pictures. We need VIDEO!!!!Haha...

Thank you for the kind words. To answer your questions
1. At times they are low. I just ensure they don't point at substrate. The substrate is heavy 2-4mm so I don't get a snow storm at all.
2. I regularly move the pumps around as I find I'm never happy with their location. Also, I feel it helps some corals grow in different directions. The stag corals in particular.

Thank you very much Greg for your kind words. I too have grown to love Ryan Farish's music!! It's perfect for fish tank videos.

Be sure to visit again soon. The new video has been delayed but will be on the way soon.

Lucky Visit

I had the privilege to meet Chingchai and see his wonderful tank at the end of March. He took time out of his busy day to show me his tank. A true gentleman and his setup is truly amazing. :eek1:

Some pictures I took using my i-phone.

Update time

In general everything has been going well with the tank. Over the past two weeks I cleaned out the sump thoroughly and cleaned all pumps. Cleaning the pumps is a difficult job as the electrical cord is hidden away and hard to undo. I therefore elect to dis-mantle the pumps over the sump area and clean them there.

After comments last year about keeping the flow pumps clean, I decided to clean the Tunze's and Votech's. And I am happy I did. Simply let them soak in white vinegar for day then use a small brush and the purple coralline slides right off!! I then let them soak in RODI water for about 5 hours before returning them to the display tank.

I discovered some Apistia is the sump which must have crept there from the display tank. Unfortunately my Copper-band fish which did such a great job passed away so I will try to get another one and put him in the sump area first then try him in the display tank.

For those of you which use Zeo supplements or are interested, I have tried Spur2 over the past month. It certainly does brighten some corals which I easily noticed. I was very cautious with the dosing amount only dosing 3ml every 8 days. I recently stopped and will wait for 2 weeks to see if there are any noticeable changes then will continue as previous.

I had trouble with both Tunze 6105's and my Tunze 6055 pumps last month. After dreading the worst I figured out that it was just the fuse for the 6105's and the transformer for the 6055 which had a built in (adjustable) fuse.

Below are pictures of the old and new 6055 transformer. What is cool about the new one is it came with a selection of fuses so I can change the output. Unfortunately I may have to buy new transformers (the flatter ones) for the 6105's in order to get more fuses as I am currently using the lower voltage ones.

Growth Pictures

I thought it was about time to compare the past and present.

When you look at your tank everyday you forget just how much corals grow. The two pictures below show the 'island' and compare pictures taken back in August 2011 to now, April 2012.

Hi Andrew,

An excellent update!!
Corals have definately "TAKEN OFF" with an upward climb :D

Thanks for the interesting insight on the Tunze pumps. And the difference in transformers. I am getting 6095s for my new tank. Need to check on the transformers.
Regarding changing the fuses.....Could ya give some more details....you said it comes with variety of fuses? And what's the criteria for selecting an output? Is it performance related?

Thanks for the amazing update!!

Amazing as usual:wavehand:

One question thou: On your "smaller" version you've used a "gradient" background. I don't know if I've missed that at some point here but I don't think you are using one now. What are you impressions about it?

again congratz!!!

You have a beautiful tank sir. The attention to the details is amazing, it's so clean. I always find myself coming back to this thread for inspiration. Great work.

I'm very interested in trying Zeovit. I haven't seen many examples with a large fishload as yours. Would you mind discussing your feeding regime and the balance btw nutrient load coral health and cyano. What hiccups have you had?

what two types of anthias do you have in the tank in the Reef in the sky 3 vid? I know one of the species are barlett's anthias but what is the other species?

also what brand of t5 bulbs are you using and what are they specifically?? and what is your blue to white ratio?? Amazing tank btw
