A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

They did some good work.

I think I will have to get my local college students a chance to make a video of my setup too.

Thanks for the idea.

They do. I am waiting for them to upload all of the pics they took to my Photobucket account!

Great video! Do you still have the pair of achillies tangs? I didn't see them in the video.

Thank you!

I do still have the Achillies and hope to put them back into the main tank in the next month or so. One of them was not eating well. I ended up catching the pair and putting them into one of my QT's to bulk up. I didn't want to keep them separated.

They are being fed a lot of live brine, nori and mysid shrimp. Both are doing well!

Just finished this amazing thread! Authored by a truly dedicated Aquarist, who has been gracious enough to share this amazing journey with us. Dan this has been truly inspiring, what you've created can also be applied to smaller and larger tanks.

I have been impressed and have learned a ton from your story! I only find fault in one area; a man with your knowledge, and resources surely can find a better college to root for than Arizona! ;) Just kidding Wildcats are true contenders.

Thanks again for sharing your Journey with RC!

Dan, a few questions... in your 90 with all the rock, do you have any algae problems? Do you run a powerhead in that tank? I have a spare 90 reef ready that I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

Some Updated Pics

No, I did not buy a new camera.

I did have a couple college students come and take some pics for me though. The lighting wasn't the best, the time of day they were here, but, they give you a good idea of my growth. t hope you all enjoy!

It's been a journey that I wouldn't replace!

Thank you for the kind words!

And yes, the Cat's are truly impressive this year! One of my favorite parts of traveling to the away games is visiting the different LFS's and wholesellers!

So Michael was able to get a good deal on a Dialyseas. The prior owner primarily used it for automatic water changes but it does so much more! The unit appears to be in very good shape.

According to the companies website, these are the key benefits of the system:

1) REMOVES WASTE WHILE MINIMIZING ORIGINAL WATER AND SALT LOSS
2) DIALYSEAS MAKES AND ADDS NEW DEIONIZED WATER AUTOMATICALLY WITH "0" PHOSPHATES
3) REMOVES ALL CONTAMINANTS NOT JUST NITRATE
4) DOES NOT USE OR RELY ON ANY FORM OF BACTERIA TO BREAK DOWN WASTE
5) DOES NOT ERADICATE PLANKTON IN REEF AQUARIUMS
6) ELIMINATES EUTROPHICATION
7) ULTRA RELIABLE, ULTRA SAFE, IMMEDIATELY EFFECTIVE
8) NEVER CHANGE WATER AGAIN DIALYSEAS DOES IT AUTOMATICALLY
9) CONSISTENT HIGH AQUARIUM WATER QUALITY AND TOP OF WATER QUALITY
10) INCREASE AQUARIUM BIOLOAD UP TO FOUR TIMES
11) STABILIZES ALKALINITY THEREFORE STABILIZES PH
12) CONTINUOUS SUPPLY OF CALCIUM AND OTHER TRACE ELEMENTS
13) REDUCES AQUARIUM MAINTENANCE DRASTICALLY
14) REDUCES STRESS ON ALL LIFE FORMS EXCEPT PARASITES IT KILLS THEM
15) AUTOMATICALLY TOPS OFF AQUARIUM WITH R.O.D.I WATER AND THEN ADDS THE PROPER AMOUNT OF DISSOLVED SALT
16) LOCAL AND REMOTE MONITORING AND CONTROL OF ALL MACHINE PARAMETERS
17) EASILY MAINTAINED
18) USE ANY POWDERED SALT YOU LIKE

Has anyone used on of the Dialyseas units before? I currently have a Reefkeeper monitoring unit which I will be installing on the tank so I am certain there will be some redundancy. I figure redundancy on a tank of this size will give me more of a checks and balance system.

I'm sure this has been covered many times in this thread.. so I apologize. What are your thoughts on this unit or if you have reviewed it in your thread, could you point me towards the correct pages?
