A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Looks fantastic Dan! I really like how your SPS are taking off, and I think you have a really nice mix of corals! Tanks like yours are putting Tucson on the map for reefing.
Take Care

Hey Guys,

I just want to give a shout out to Dan. We all think Dan is a great guy for taking the time to keep this thread up to date and respond to everyone's questions.

Dan and I started PM'ing and emailing over a year ago and have become good fish pen pals.

I was lucky enough to spend the day with Dan during the holidays and we went fish and coral shopping. Dan is as great a guy in person as he appears here in the virtual world. Granted his photo skills are total POOP. But he is great guy to spend the day with talking fish and corals.

If you are in his area you should hit him up for a tank tour I guarantee you will enjoy the time spent with him!

Thanks for hanging out with me!

Dan, a few questions... in your 90 with all the rock, do you have any algae problems? Do you run a powerhead in that tank? I have a spare 90 reef ready that I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

In one of my 90 gallon rock tanks, there is very little light and I have zero algae. I have great flow in the tank and a lot of sponges growing.

I have frags set up in another tank filled with live rock. In this tank, I do have some algae growing as it is a much deeper tank and I have a lot of light shining above the frags. Probably not as much flow on the bottom of this tank too.

Wow Dan simply amazing! Your tank has come a long way! Nice growth and colors, the fish look fat and healthy! you certainly are "The Man" in the desert, keep on with the progress buddy, best wishes for you and your family.

Thanks Erwin! It really seems to be taken off! I just got a whole bunch of fish pictures that I need to post this weekend. Best wishes to you and your family too!

I want to see hoe your fish room has changed. I have been working on mine and some motivation looking at others really helps.

Will we ever be done? LOL

I'm sure this has been covered many times in this thread.. so I apologize. What are your thoughts on this unit or if you have reviewed it in your thread, could you point me towards the correct pages?

I have the unit sitting in my garage and never ended up putting it to use! I need to bring it to the LFS!

Once I started using live ocean (Catalina) water and set up my APEX unit, I didn't see the need. I still dose and guess I am just a creature of habit.

This may have already been mentioned but is that two sohals? Just curious how they get along? Also those powder blues!! Absolutely gorgeous! How did things go introducing them together?

Hi Dan, I have just read this entire thread and your tank and care are amazing. I have just set up a 350 gallon and running for 3 days. My LFS is picking up 7 small tangs for me tomorrow at the whole sellers. I just hope to use your techniques and have you success so I too can have a lot of tangs in my tank. So any words of advice or things you would have done differently would be appreciated. Also are you still using and liking your genesis system..

Thanks Jeff! I am looking forward to someday seeing your tank in person!

Dave,

You are too kind!

It's been a lot of fun getting to know you and I had a great time being chaperoned around the various whole sellers.

Next time I need to visit your monster of a tank!

Very impressive. Cool selection of fish & corals. Love it!!
With having to feed heavy in the sea horse tank do you find that you get a cyano build up?
