A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

I just finished reading all of the thread. Pretty neat. Gotta say I wasn't a fan of your initial aquascaping, but with all the fantastic growth it doesn't matter much. Like you've said it needs more ledges for stuff. I've gotten some good ideas from you on the topic of large systems, and I think I need to use some of the techniques you've got set up. I've just gotten to the point in my build when I will start adding tangs to my tank, and I've got a lead on a whitetail tang next month. Just hope they don't make me pay through the nose for it.... Keep up the great work, and never loose the passion for this hobby. BTW. I think you're better at this than you give yourself credit for. I know of some reefers whom others consider "masters" who only seem to be proficient in pointing out what they want and letting others do all the work for them. Don't get me wrong. They have plenty of passion for this hobby. Just no skill and a terminal case of TMM if you ask me.

I give respect to those who love to do their own work. Tanks like this have inspired me. My next tank will be acrylic, made by me, and as large as my floor will hold. +- 1000 gallon system. For my money, I'm the designer, builder, and maintenance guy.:spin3:
Thanks for inspiring all of us. As others have said, you've set new standards for the hobby. If you let us stand on your shoulders we will indeed be able to see further.

Whitetail Bristletooth Tangs!!!!

Whitetail Bristletooth Tangs!!!!

So if you follow my thread, you'll know that for the longest time, I have been looking for a pair of Whitetail Bristletooth Tangs.

Over the past two years, I have looked everywhere! I have emailed stores, wholesalers and distributors all over the country. On two occasions, I have seen NYAquatics or another LFS would get one or two in. The problem was that they were either too expensive or too large.

Well, I got lucky. A distributor got back to me that one of their divers was able to collect them. I had to have my LFS order a whole box so I ended up getting nine (9)!!!! I am quarantining 6 at home and 3 at my LFS. They are beautiful fish!

I am only going to end up keeping two and will end up selling the others have they have been QT'd for a long time. They had a tough journey. They were flown from the diver to LAX, cleared custom, re-oxygenated and were put on a midnight flight to Tucson. They are doing great! A little shy but all seem to be eating.

Dan those are amazing!!!! I have had a standing "in-stock" alert request on live aquaria for that fish for a long time! Good luck with them!

danfeig,

We need a FTS with a good camera and a video in full HD :D

Can´t stop to read this thread....your reef is amazing

My dream plan is to build a similar system, 120"x80"x40"

Getting a lot of ideas here !!!

Best Regards

Oh yeah!!! That's the fish I've been looking for. I've got dibs on two [I think] coming in next month. Hopefully setting up my Q tank today. They're beautiful fish aren't they? You have to give us detailed reports on how they behave together and what they have an appetite for. They say that re-oxygenating the water can spike the ammonia levels. I hope they aren't affected. How much apiece if I may???

Danfeig , how long have you had the red goniopora for? do you target feed them? and what do you use?

I have had my large red for several months now. My green goniopora I have had for over 1 year. I don't target feed directly. 3 times per week I poor my defrosted food into my sump by the intake of my pump. It spreads through my lock line and everything gets fed. I also poor a mixture of copepods, rotifers and phyto into my tank twice per week.

There is never a lack of food in my system!

Cant wait to see this!!!!! I've had to live vicariously thru everyone else on here for the last 9 months so I love seeing what everyone else is doing.

We need another pic update and fish room update!

Okay Dan what did you get new this week...

You post that your LFS was hitting the coral suppliers.

My Facebook for Fishy Bizness posted photos of them at the LA Wholesalers....

So what goodies did you get ?

Come on.... Dazzle us buddy !!!!!!!!

Dave B

I have to keep you in suspense"¦..I am going to have someone come over next week and shoot some pictures of my new additions and the fish room.

Whitetail Bristletooth Tang UPDATE

Whitetail Bristletooth Tang UPDATE

All seems to be going really well!

They ate 3 times today and although they are still pretty timid and shy, they have been coming out a lot more. They just need to get used to me watching them so much! :celeb2:

Nice Gem Tangs! You have 3 or 4?
Pricey little buggers!
Nice thread, have been quietly (vicariously) watching your progress.
Nice setup and quite a creme' del a crem of tanks.
If money was no object, I'd be right there, with my wife on board too she loves our 90 gal.

Thanks for all the learning curves you went through and updates. Just for the record I miss Fedex Fridays too!

Dan,

I've gone through all 107 pages of your tank history and I have to say, this is the most impressive and insightful collection of information on the hobby I have seen. The tank is amazing and has renewed my want for a larger and more awesome tank. When I see a display tank like yours the main thing it says to me is (and it is in a whisper) "Doug, look at that tank! You could do that too!".

Thanks for your diligence in getting your trials and tribulations out there and available for the rest of us to learn from.

Doug
