A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

It is funny who you speak with regarding the support. I spoke to a contractor and after we did our calculations he seemed okay it. I have 2X10 joists every 16" and on top of it is 3/4" or 1" particle board. Then from there are real wood floors. I am thinking after speaking with him, a couple guys who do tank installs here in Atlanta, that I would feel comfortable with a 120 and 40 gallon sump.

Dan - question for you. I know you are a big fan of Avast Marine, what do you think of their skimmers? They have the popular cone shape and a Siccie Water Pump.

I don't think that there are any products made by Avast that I don't like. I have not personally used their skimmers, however, there are a lot of satisfied users. Check out their forum on ReefCentral.

Wow Dan. Everything looks awesome!!!
By the way you feed your fish I have to wonder if I am underfeeding mine.
How often do you feed that quantity to you tank?

Dan,

Great video. Tank and fish are looking amazing.

Why don't you host a monsoon party in August, and invite us.

In restocking my tank, I have had a couple of chances to replace my Borbonius pair and I keep saying not now, or maybe I won't. But then I watch the video of yours, and I'm thinking maybe I need to go back to the fish store and get some.

I think I need to start and attend some sort of intervention meetings, "Over-Feeders Anonymous!"

I enjoy watching my fish eat. Most days, I feed my QT's live Brine in the morning before heading to work. My SuperFeeder and Apex Auto Feeder go off once per day. At night, I generally feed 20 cubes over a couple hour period.

What you saw in the video was me feeding the tank through a "Beer Bong" that goes down into my return and out through my lock line. I do this every few days so that the food spreads to all inhabitants and corals in my system.

Dave,

The Borbo's are some of my favorite fish! I still have two living in my overflow box along with a Cleaner Wrasse. I have tried everything to get them out. I've tried netting them, traps, etc. I've pulled my return lines so that the water from my overflow gushes down into my sump. The problem is that there is 3/4" of space and the bottom of my overflow, enough room for the fish to cower in a corner. I need to place some crushed coral or sand on the bottom and then try again.

So I am heading to California on Saturday and plan on visiting all of the wholesalers on Monday. I hope that I am able to see you!

NOW that's how you make a video. No more teaser videos. I saw the surge and I said to myself that Dan has freaked the fish out. Upon further review I noticed mad fish food coming out the returns.

How's the copepod experiment working out?

awesome Dan!!!!! the MI looks amazing!

Hey Steve. Nice to see your build coming along!

The Moorish Idol is one of my favorites. I just removed my second MI from my cubicle system and into a 75 gallon QT with my Whitetails. It is becoming a ferocious eater! I am hoping that by the end of the summer I can transition him into my main display. It's about 1.5 inches smaller than by big one.

Do you have issues with your moorish idol going after some of your LPS. I have been feeding mine live clams for 4 months and now he is onto frozen food and nori. When I added a new scolly and a frag of Acans, he decided he likes those as well.

I did with one of my brain corals. One of my Foxfaces seemed to pick on it and when it got damaged, my Moorish Idol enjoyed some of its flesh. I took the brain out for several months to heal and when I placed it back, the same thing happened all over again. Needless to say, it's back in one of my QT's. One of these days I will take it in to Fishy Bizness or will give it away.

Absolutely amazing....

Absolutely amazing....

Hello Dan, I've spent the last week (and all of my internet time) reading this gigantic thread and must say your tank is one of the nicest I've ever seen. I love the photos and videos you've posted, truly spectacular animals you have. Any chance you can get your video guys to do a 30 minute FTS video in HD? Not having a tank of my own forces me to watch fish videos, fortunately, there are tanks like yours to feed my fish watching desires.

Any chance you plan on doing any videos of the CUC for us crustacean lovers?

Again, absolutely amazing tank and fish. Thank you for building it and for making this thread.
