A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Is this the same as www.freshmarine.com ? I did not know that company was legit.

Yes, they are legit. I am 3 of 4 with them.

They don't have a great guarantee program. Basically, its an "Arrive Alive" guarantee and then they want pics, water samples, and the fish to be sent back.

I have purchased a few large acro's from them with success. The Caribbean Blue's appear to be doing well. I had purchased some Clown Tangs from them that were dead within 3 days. Another fish order that was fine.

I wouldn't order any real expensive fish from them, but occasionally, they have some great sales!

Nice vid dude

Did you call me "Dude"????

Thank you. I have been fooling around with the camcorder. I am trying to get some action shots of this Pistol Shrimp that has a symbiotic relationship with a Yellow Watchman Goby. The two of them together make quite a pair. The only problem, whenever I go near, the shrimp hides...

FedEx Friday Deliveries...

FedEx Friday Deliveries...

Well, Friday's deliveries were delayed until today.

Fortunately, there was no livestock in the order. My order from Avast Marine was somehow delayed in Phoenix.

The lack of Friday shipments gave me the opportunity to empty my sump (except the Miracle Mud chamber) and shop-vac out loose carbon, gfo and other debris. I was then able to do roughly a 200 gallon water change after wiping everything down.

I am considering adding a 1"- 2" layer of sand over my Miracle Mud and turning the center chamber of my sump into a refugium. The water flow and tumbling in the sump would be great for growing chaeto and other macro algae. I would still keep my separate refugium, however, I am thinking about adding a few seahorses and perhaps some pipefish. By turning the Miracle Mud chamber into a refugium, I could then run the sump light 24 hours and could run my existing rufugium or seahorse tank on a more normal lighting schedule.

Today's shipment from Avast is pretty awesome. The quality of their workmanship is something special.

The two MR-16 media reactors are 18" tall (21" overall height) and hold 30 cups or 7 liters of media. I will be using one for GFO and one for Carbon. I will probably use one Mag-Drive 10 and will "T" off with PVC the outflow so it can service both reactors. Each reactor came with silicone tubing and ball valves. I also added a couple of 2 gallon buckets of Reef Choice Carbon and Reef Choice PhosBgone.

Dan, you have a wonderful setup and family I have been inspierd to go big for my wall build bc of your outstanding commitment keep up the amazing work
thanks,agin

Absolutely beautiful tank. I have been following the progress for months though I just signed up for an account. I love your stocking list.

I know your sump is custom but with the miracle mud he recommends flow through the sump to be around 2000 - 3000 GPH. If you do the miracle mud and sand you might want to do the sand on the bottom and the mud on top.

This read has been a fantastic adventure. Thank you for all your hard work and allowing me to live vicariously through it :D

I can't wait to see it mature.

Fish Room Odors - Any ideas for freshness???

Fish Room Odors - Any ideas for freshness???

So my wife and daughter have been complaining that when I leave the fish room door open, even just for a few minutes, the living room and foyer smell .

I am not sure exactly what the smell is. The tank water doesn't smell. I am running my RO waste water through my skimmer collection cup - so that is constantly being flushed out. I have been emptying my trash in the room regularly... I just can't figure it out.

I thought that maybe it was because the room was pretty closed off or "tight". But, I have had the window in the fish room open for the last 4 weeks. I thought that it was perhaps because I keep getting the concrete floor wet. But that doesn't occur every day.

I purchased 5 large boxes of Baking Soda and have them placed throughout the room. I purchased a fan and have placed it between the skimmer and window, blowing the air outside.

This past weekend I purchased the attached room air-purifier, with a built in UV, HEPA-type, germicidal filter.

It does smell a little better, but if possible, I am looking for clean, refreshing.

Any suggestions????

Your tank is sick! Diggin the build big time. As far as cameras have you looked at the GoPro Cameras or one that has an underwater housing? I've seen alot of my surf, skateboard, dirt bike and car friends have them and love their GoPro Cams.
