A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Looks like a wall at Seaworld here in FL!!! Awesome!

WOW what an incredible tank! Such an enormous build and very well done! It took awhile to get thru all 23 pages but it was well worth it. It must be like having seaworld in your living room :)

Prochef & Draven:

Welcome to my thread and thank you both for the compliments! I love Sea World and I can only imagine having that quality of a system.

Thanks again!

Dan let me tell you, give thanks to whatever/whomever you believe in because you sure are very lucky and fortunate. I always visualize myself doing something of this sort in my future. But I have time I'm still young. But yes awesome build, it took me a while to read it all but after I did I was glad. Mind saying what you do for a living?

Thank you Reef_Knight! I do feel very fortunate. I have a loving family who are all happy & healthy :spin1:. As much as I love my tank and the hobby, it doesn't come close to my other loves. But, it is something I enjoy very much. It is a major, major stress relief for me! I work hard and play hard. "Mind saying what you do for a living?" Sure - I work in commercial real estate. Brokerage, investment and development.

Thank you for following along!

AS ... I ended up putting one of my Powder Blues back into QT to fatten him up a bit.

Hi danfeig, this is one amazing tank. how do u manage to catch your pbt from a tank this size and putting him back to the qt???

Hi Orangegoby. Thank you for the praise.

It was actually pretty easy to catch him. Because he was getting picked on, I ended up catching him hanging out in a corner close to the surface. I have a rather large pond net that I used.

Unfortunately, he is not doing too well in the QT and I don't think he will make it. :( I just can't get him to eat. He won't touch any garlic soaked Nori, Dainichi or even live mysis.

I bought my house for 75k. I bet you are getting close to that on this fish tank. I have 10k in my two tanks.(240 and 75). If I come across millions im building a 20k gallon next to the ocean where I can have natural sea water flow in and out.

Great build.

Wow what a build you have. I had to leave AZ way to hot down there. Be watching this build for sure.

Thanks saltyjarhead! Glad to have you here.

I love it hot, but yes, summers can get a little brutal. We always try to spend as much time away during the summer as we can. Unfortunately, we may leave the heat of Tucson only for the heat of another city or country.

I'm not a "Trekey" but the words "To boldly go where no man has gone before" come to mind.
In the last two days I have read the details of your adventure. It's been eye opening. Technology has come a long was in marine reef keeping. Things I hadn't imagined are just a ( rather large) wallet away.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks sail33!!!

I am not a "Trekey" either, but if my build thread inspires or helps anyone with their tank - it's well worth it.

The technology is constantly changing. For good and bad. While for the most part technology is improving the process of reek keeping, I don't think there is anything better than observation, patience and practical reef keeping. Despite the ReefKeepers and other control units/monitors - I still manually fill my test kits and check my Ca, Alk, Ph, Salinity, etc.

Amazing looking tank

Thank you! I see that this is your first post on Reef Central after being a member for a few years. I feel honored that you responded to my thread when there so many builds much more beautiful than mine.

Quarantine Tank Pics

Have followed since day one! Must say everything looks absolutely amazing and well thought out...more pics!

Thank you sieloff84!!! I feel like things are getting better all the time. I just wish I had more time to get more things done!

I am glad that you have been following along!

Awesome build. Can I be in charge of your quarantine tanks...

Sure you can! They are actually a lot of work! I have been feeding the fish in my QT's about 4x's each day. The fish in my two 75 gallon QT's have been here for about 2 weeks. My biggest challenge has been my Moorish Idols. One has been eating well, the other has been incredibly finicky!!! He is finally nibbling on purple nori.

Here are some pics... In my more challenging QT are the two Moorish Idols and two Vlamingi Tangs.

My other QT has one Clown Tang, a Tomini Tang, a pair of Blonde Naso's and a pair of White Cheek Tangs.

One of my favorite fish, clown tangs! Where r u getting ur fish from? Local or online?

I try to get most of my fish local. My LFS, Simply Elegant Aquatics can usually get anything I desire at great prices! I know they are planning on starting an internet business one of these days and I will get everyone the link when they do.

If I do buy online, I make sure that it is from a Seller that is housing the fish for quite some time. I am not a big fan of some of the retail/wholesalers that take your fish order only to then order the fish from a different wholesaler. It puts too much stress on the fish!

Amazing tank!!!

Do you plan to add the new TIR lenses to your radions? With the depth of your tank it might be worth looking into.

Thank you baddAZZlars!

Yes, I am planning on adding the TIR lenses to my Radions. My LFS has already ordered 12 pairs for me!

I am excited to install them! I have been very impressed with the Radions thus far and can't wait to see the effects with the additional power the lenses provide.

Those idols look good. Mine passed away as you know but curious what you fed them. They both ate nori like a champ. Everything else was null in void.
