A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

First of all, this tank build is awesome! I am amazed at the time and money put into this build. Congrats on convincing your wife to letting you spend the childrens college fund into the aquarium. LOL

I just have a question. You mentioned you were using digital aquatics reefkeeper and now your using the APEX. I am saving up money to get a controller. Do you have any suggestions? Why did you like the Apex more than the reefkeeper? was there something about the reefkeeper you didn't like? Thanks

Sleepingtiger:

Thank you for the compliments! Yeah...I have a pretty cool wife! The kids are great too! They are taking care of things while I am gone right now. As far as college goes - they know I will send them anywhere but ASU!!!!

The controller was an easy decision once I saw it at MACNA. One word. CONTROLABILITY!

I am able to pull up every socket on my iPhone or iPad and make instant changes to my system. I am able to set up rules "if skimmer is full shut off skimmer pumps and notify me". ...."if temperature falls below 75, turn on heater and lights..." etc. I can check while away all my parameters including salinity. When anything is abnormal, I am notified.

At home, I can hit a "feed" button and have my all my pumps, skimmers and vortechs shut off.

Check out Neptunes web page!

Sorry to hear about the losses; would dosing hydrogen peroxide help with your DO levels?

Thanks benjc!

I am not familiar with Hydrogen Peroxide dosing so I have never given any consideration to it.

I do have my low oxygen issue resolved. I purchased three Sicce Voyager HP 2800 gph Stream Pumps. I have them hidden behind my three towers near the bottom of the tank pointed upwards. They do a phenomenal job of creating surface agitation and gas exchange from 4' below!

Have fun in Vegas, let me know how the concert was, my wife are going to the concert down here in Phoenix on Tuesday.

I'll be interested in hearing what you think of the concert.

It was a pretty good show, but I have to say that it was different than what I/we expected. I don't know what, if anything, the casino charged us for the tickets. I know the people next to us paid about $300 a piece. My wife was hoping that she would be performing most of her old hits. Unfortunately, she sang a lot of her newer material and seemed to "re-invent" some of her old songs... playing them in different tunes. What ****ed me off though... the concert was supposed to start at 8:00 PM. She ended up coming on at 10:40. There was a DJ playing some of her songs and some Michael Jackson tunes... that was the warm-up. I would have thought they would have had a better pre-show...

Have a good time. She is 54 and looks great!

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around life with a 48" deep tank. Don't get me wrong I would love to SIT AND WATCH IT but doing any work on it would be intersting to say the least.

Joe

How about algae on the glass? With that depth and the stock radions has the light on the glass been low enough to hold down the algae?

Joe

Joe:

Cleaning has not been as big of an issue as you might think. With the exception of needing a ladder to reach into the tank - the tools are the same. I have a 48" gravel vac, 48" grabbers, 48" scrapers, etc. I have also been using pond cleaning tools that are SW safe. It does take a little more time, but it isn't intimidating.

I still get algae on the glass. I need to wipe down the glass at least twice... although I do it three times per week. It's not as bad as it was in my old tank with metal halides and VHO's.

Fluidized Sand Reactor

Fluidized Sand Reactor

I realize that it is not Friday, but, I was able to run over to Simply Elegant Aquatics today and pick up my new Fluidized Sand Reactor from Emperor Aquatics.

All I can say is wow!

This unit is a beast! I didn't realize that it was going to be so large. The thing just towers over me and I am fortunate that the fish room has very high ceilings.

I hope to be able to set this up on Friday, although I am expecting several deliveries.

Wow!! That is a big one. How often will you have to reverse flow through it to clean it out? I look forward to see how you plumb this into the system.

I have to say I never seen one that skinny before and not seeing the sand movement chamber also. But it looks like a beast of a filter.

Make sure you go have dinner at the Top of th World. Best time to go is right before sunset so you can see Vegas before the the strip is lite up. Food is amazing. It's at the Stratosphere hotel

Thanks reeks reef!

We didn't make it to Top of the World this time. We had a great view from our suite though at the Aria.

Regards...

I have to agree with you about the concert. I would of liked to see more of the old stuff. Her new stuff is pretty dark, and the one song / act of her coming out with a gun and shooting her dancers was beyond me.

She did look incredible at 54 and running around like she did was pretty damn impressive. We had great seats on the floor that we got through the AMEX Centurion, but anytime she would come to the front of the triangular stage, everyone would stand up and pull their Android or Iphone out, hold it up in the air and take pics and videos. We couldn't even see her even though we were 7 rows out.

She started around 10:30 and I would have much preferred another entertainer instead of a DJ as the pre-show.

On another note. That new sand reactor is pretty impressive. You definitely need to have a fish room for that one. My wife would say " Oh NO, your not putting that in the living room: :-)

She is an absolute beauty!!!

The picture does not give her justice. She is approximately 12" long x 8" wide. She opened up instantly under my Radions!
