A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Leroy, Man UP and get some progress made!

Thanks Renton777.

The procedure is working that's for sure. I have had the two Sohals together without the egg-crate tonight for over 4 hours thus far. I am real tempted to leave the egg-crate out when I go to sleep. They are either ignoring one another or taking turns chasing one another. The larger one is definitely feeling more confident and comfortable. The smaller one has backed down somewhat from her aggression.

Thank you very much for the compliments!

Patience my child, patience. Nothing good happens fast.... You have what looks like the entire Reef Central watching. We want to see you succeed with the sohals so take your time.

Joe

Dan. Nice system, both aesthetic and mechanical, youre in the beginning stages of composing ... Feel free to contact me with ANY, related or unrelated, problems/comments/questions/concerns, if you prefer/deem warranted !

Thank you, again, for the kind words, guys ...

Josh,

Thank you very much for the compliments and for the offer of assistance. It is very much appreciated.

I always enjoying reading your posts/comments on various threads that I follow! They are always very informative and well thought out.

Out of curiosity, how many fish DO you have? lol Do you have a checklist or something?! (Because I saw so many fish in the video of your DT)

You know something, I don't. I have lots of tiny wrasses, gobies and Anthias that I rarely see. From a tang standpoint, I think I have 16-18 pairs of different species in my different tanks.

One of these days I will put together a list...

Sohal Tang Update III

Sohal Tang Update III

I think I am feeding them a little too much. They are getting big and more active!

Tonight I had them together for a little over 6 hours without the egg-crate. The smaller Sohal is losing some of her aggressiveness. The larger Sohal did some chasing of her own, however, they seemed to spend more time apart.

I will probably continue to remove the egg-crate each night when I come home from work. Perhaps this weekend, I will remove the egg-crate early in the day and see how they do together for a longer period of time.

Hi, amazing tank! Been following along with much fascination.

When you feed the Sohals, do you feed them with the egg crate separating them? or is it too risky at this point?

Seahorse Tank

Seahorse Tank

So Griffin came over this weekend and took a couple hundred pictures for me that I need to sort out.

Here are some pictures of the Seahorses and refugium. It is amazing to me how much the Caulerpa and other macro algae has grown. It's fun watching the Seahorses and couple Mandarins navigate through it. There are also tons of pods swimming about and skirting along the bottom.

I just went back through some of the pages...

Can we get a updated FTS of all the tanks/sump/seahorse/fridge?

Inspiration all the way....

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Awesome build - been following for a while and am quite happy you have shared so much with us. I am actually moving down to the desert myself (Scottsdale) and will have to up my reef game... a lot... ... okay - a ton.

How is the ritteri nem coming along? Has it settled into a nice spot and holding on?

Although they are quite finicky - once those guys are stable and rooted - they make a gorgeous addition to the aquarium (until they grow, grow, grow!)

This is great info to know, and will definately help me on my build as well as the community. (I love tangs) you may have posted in an earlier thread, but how large are your QT tanks and how many do you have running?

My main QT's are each 75 gallons. I also have a couple 30 gallon tanks that I quickly set up with a couple of canister and sponge filters if I have to medicate.

...Dan. Certainly no coincidence the positive behavioral aspects, you've been fortunate enough to experience, correlated with this method of quarantine/acclimation. Considering you wernt aware of this method/aspect of Tang care/social behavior, beforehand, it was an excellent intuitive decision at the time.

I have always been aware of introducing certain species, mostly aggressive fish, into your aquarium at the same time.

Everyone told me I was nuts though to keep Powder Blues, Purple, Achilles or Sohals in the same tank together. Don't go with pairs, go with 3 of a kind! I heard that a lot!

I have to say though, quarantining a pair of the same species together has really created a bond that I did not expect.

A couple of nights ago, I was having a glass of wine in my living room, observing the tank. One of my larger Powder Blue Tang's decided to chase one of my Achilles (it only lasted for 10 seconds). Now here is the part that shocked me. Whether it was the wine kicking in or some distinctive nature of the Tangs... my other Achilles immediately seemed to come to the defense of her friend/partner. Raising her dorsal fins and getting side by side with my other Achilles waiting to take on the Powder Blue! Then they all went back to grazing on the rocks and swimming about.

So basically why your sayin is its like watchin a nat geo documentary on a real reef seeing the schools defend their homes and such. I saw one where a smaller school of powder blues were grazing an area and then a massive school of convicts came in even though they were highly outnumbered easily 100:1 they still defended their area. It's amazing what you have done! This is down right impossible probably but you should try and video a scenario like that I'm sure everyone would love to see it!

Keep doin what your doin cuz were all takin notes!
Joe.

Tank Shots

Tank Shots

Attached are some tank shots that Griffin took over the weekend. I need to get a better full tank shot. The first pic is close to the whole thing, it's hard to put in perspective that it is 8' wide and 4' tall.

Well Dan, I am jealous. Mike and everyone else at SEA told me there are beautiful tanks here in Tucson, but wow yours is great. The photos of your setup were great also gave us all a real good look at how it was done. I am hoping I will have my funds soon so I can have mine looking halfway like yours soon.
