A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Your daughter Ashley. I graduated this year. You mentioned you go to SEA a lot but have you tried GQfish here in tucson Nathan has great customer service.

As a Hobbyist, I used to go everywhere and would try to support all of the LFS. Nathan is a good guy!

Dan, white tail Bristletooth tangs are IMHO the nicest tangs. I got 2 (1 at a time) from NY Aquatics, lost the first to Ick and the 2nd to Sandy. I would inquire and let them know you want a few, when I got my 2nd they had gotten a shipment of 4-5 in. GL

Thanks. I have emailed and spoken with them a few times now. They haven't been able to get them in for some time. I do have have several wholesalers and LFS keeping their eyes open for me!

Dan, your thread is so entertaining I had to read it twice! I even find myself checking in on Fridays for Danday :D

I'm not a reefer, but have been drawn into some big build threads on RC while doing research for a 200+g freshwater setup. I plan on incorporating a lot of (mostly tank and plumbing related) reef ideas into my fresh water system. A lot of what the reefers are doing nowaday are far superior to the FW world but it works. I'm also going to prepare myself for the time when I am house stable and financially capable of building a 200+g mixed reef.

Thank you for documenting your adventure so well. One thing I did notice while reading the whole process again, is you're a fish tease! You show us all those boxes you get, but rarely REALLY show what came in the box until weeks/months later. And then its only a tease. But I guess that's what keeps us coming back! :crazy1:

Dan-
What is your lighting schedule and strength? I also have a 72” X 36” X 48” deep tank that I have been running very successfully with three 400 watt 20k radiums. I just switched to three Ecotech Radion Pro’s about 12” off the surface and everything that’s deep in my tank is doing great but everything up top is getting burnt tips.

How long have you had those corals and are they maricultured?

They are all aquacultured or have been in captivity for a long time. They are doing a little better now. I was just wondering why so many people have way more Radons above their tank than I do. I was mostly concerned that I needed more but I have not seen any fading or darkening of any of the corals at the bottom of the tank.

OK, Somebody has to go for it so here goes

Dearly beloved we are gathered here today in memory of DanDay. For those who knew it we will truly miss it .............

Just had to go for it

Thanks TheLub!!!

I appreciate all the compliments! I have some some incredibly nice FW tanks, planted, with rock that rival many SW tanks.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask if I can ever be of any assistance to you!

You probably didn't acclimate your corals to the lights for a long enough period.

I now run my lights at 100% but first started at 60% and slowly, over time, increased the strength. I am using one of the preset schedules with my time starting at 9:30 AM and ending at 10:30 PM. I have also added 30% cloud coverage and 10% storms.

Hope this helps!

Truth be told, DanDay or FedEx Friday's have been replaced! I finally have an LFS that is able to get me what I want, when I want, and at better prices then online!

Friday's will still be FishTank Friday's and we will have a new weekly series starting in July entitled:

Its responses like that to complete strangers that aren't even in the game that make you a true class act. Your journaling in general is an inspiration in itself.

Once question I've had after going through your journal twice is regarding your filtration intake system for the DT. I don't think you posted much information or pictures of how you flow water from the DT to your filtration system. I know you have a rear center overflow box, but that is about it for details. That is one of the biggest 'features' I've been researching on RC and I'd be interested in seeing what design you're using for such a large display. I think I'm going with the BeanAnimal style due to its failsafe features and silent operation. Mine will be in a (comparatively) small living room so the less water noise the better.

Thanks again

I will have to shoot some pictures when I get back to Tucson. Basically, I have two overflows. My center overflow which feeds into my filter sock container/sump and from there flows into my +/- 225 gallon sump. From my sump, two other filtration tanks along with my refugium/seahorse tank are served.

I also have a smaller corner overflow that is for my closed loop system.
