A Reef Tank in the Desert - +/- 1,400 gallon system

Just spent the better part of two evenings reading the 90 pages of thread in there. Great tank...frankly a dream tank I hope to have one day once school is done. Keep up the great work logging all this amazing information.

Thanks apayan!

Lil Update

We are on a train from Boston to New York and so I had a little time to respond to some emails and update things. So we have been away for 11 days and everything seems to be going real smoothly at home. I go online several times each day to look at the tank.

Justin has been going by the house on Mondays and Fridays to change out my filter socks, wipe down the aquarium glass, add fresh saltwater to the mixing bin, check all my parameters, clean the skimmer, feed live brine shrimp to all tanks and make sure everything is good.

Our house keeper along with our house sitter has been doing a good job of feeding and checking on things.

I am able to see with my Apex when the fish room door is opened and closed. I am able to adjust my dosing pumps online when Justin has reported my water parameter results. I have also been able to monitor my temperature. I love my Apex Unit!

Speaking up temperature, it is supposed to be 113 degrees on Friday in Tucson! My water temperature has been staying between 75 - 78 degrees. I like it on the cooler side with the seahorses. I suspect with this weekends weather, it won't get below 76.

I have been spending a lot of time lately look at various forums trying to get an idea what I want to do with one of my QT's. I only have the two Sohals in one and they will be going into my main display once I return. At first I was thinking about a nem and clown tank. Now I am thinking about going with some small rare fish or anglers. Just can't decide.

Eggs

Eggs

Any thoughts as to what these eggs might be from. I shot this picture before I left. They are on the back wall of the tank.

I was thinking at first they were some time of snail or crap as no fish are staying near them. I have others spread out in other areas of the back of my tank too.

this is definitely the nicest tang collection I have ever seen. One day I'd love to get something this large setup. Have you ever thought of adding some large derasa or squamosas to help absorb up some of the nitrates? or a gigas if you could track one down.

Thanks phoenixstar!

While not very large I had a variety of clams.

It's not a surprise, my house sitter is feeding a little less while I am away and at this point in time I have zero Nitrates!

OK.. so... your house sitter held the line and put the tank on a diet... SO.... Your turn. (and mine too btw)

One pinch here one pinch there...
One cube here, one cube there....

Yeah... DIET... now if I can just do that to my self, I would be back to 110 pounds like when I graduated High School over 20 years ago.

I am definitely going to need that after I return from vacation. Sorry that I didn't have a chance to call you when we were in DC. It was hectic and non-stop from the moment we arrived.

It is ok... I understand.

IDK if I'll be in Tucson again... been many years since I was out there.

Offer is open if you ever come back.

Thank you very much for the concern.

It is definitely a big tragedy. Being away on vacation, I didn't read about it until the very next morning and was deeply saddened. Prescott is 4 hours away but other fires are burning much closer to us. This is our Monsoon season and we get a lot of Thunder & Lightening storms.

It was 113 today and things are very dry. I do have the brush surrounding our house removed a few times per year. The issue we'd have with any fire is the wind. Our house is in a canyon and with any fire, the wind would send sparks flying. I have too much land to wet down if there was a fire.

Hopefully, we will never have to deal with such a tragedy. Thanks for your concern.

I too was concerned about your house, especially the fish tank, when I was watching the news. Glad all is well. Hope your vacation is going great as well also.

Such an awful story :( We're getting some rain this morning finally, hopefully it's giving the firefighters some help.
