A Reefaholic's 1000+ Gallon Mixed Reef System Build

Thank guys. My worry is that the water will be able to flow between the sock and the acrylic. I'm wanting easy access to the socks so I can change out every 1-2 days and be a simple 30 second tasks. Before this will be the output of the skimmer where I'll be continually dosing Lanthanum Chloride to control phosphates. I'm not yet sure if I'll need GFO but time will tell.

I just drilled my sock holder. I used 95mm Bosch diamond glass bit, and it is a perfect fit. These of course are 4in socks. But thought I order assure you that a tight seal can be made.

Forgive the dirty socks.....

Does the water just spill into tray or do pipes feed to the socks? My sump feeds pipes right to the socks and I have to cut off flow to sump, then wait for them to drain, unscrew union, and then pull socks off and put new in, screw union back on, then turn flow back on.

I'd rather just have tray and pull out dirty sock and drop in clean one!

Picture will expalain mine best. This was my leak test this morning, and all went well. The pipe enter a chamber just before the socks, fill it then overflow into the socks. The water is filtered and fills the chamber below, then over flows into the small refuge.

Hi Brian,

Nice design!. What happens if the socks all get dirty and the water overflows the socks?.
Is there an escape route, or does it overflow out of the sump?.

Thanks
Mo

I don't want to take over Dustin's thread here, but below is another picture. The picture is my design in google sketch up. The lip on the sock holder is only 2". That leaves room for water to flow over in the event of a clog.

Sorry Dustin for so many personal post.

Brian and I both included emergency options should the socks overflow.

Also, I don't mind the hijacking....I try to make my thread informative and educational! I want fellow reefers to gain insight into some things that are not well documented or make much better sense with pictures!

As Dustin said a few posts ago...its always good to learn something knew to do differently on the next tank :bounce3:
