A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

Thanks for the videos. Those were great! It definitely gave me some things to think about as I try to acclimate my sps upward in the tank.

It also gave me the motivation to burn a hole in my wallet at 2 different shops this weekend on coral. Doh!

Got some new sweet stuff though. Mostly sps with a few flubbery types mixed in. [emoji106]

But a few super exciting finds for me as some great deals. Maybe soon I can share a picture of some sps looking all biggles-tastic! [emoji481]

Nice vids biggles! And I don't know why flashers insist on making their way into overflows, crazy little fish. I've scooped my eight line flasher out twice in the past few months. Might be time to rig something to stop that from happening because if he ever finds his way into the drain pipe, he's probably done.

Your tank is looking great and I look forward to seeing it with sand. Gonna be stunning

Great video buddy! Nothing like the fresh smell of acro in the morning huh? You are an acro-artist! Great work! Roughly, how long were those pieces out of the water?

Biggles knows exactly how long they can tolerate being out of the water. It's not first time he has used the dry boarding technique to punish across that step out of line.

Darth Acro, I have some questions for you...regarding your Radiums (now dont get excited for me, I'm only asking out of curiosity...): since you are using 250w and 400w Radiums side by isde in your tank, do you notice better colouration on corals under the 400w? Or is it the same? Does the 400w appear more blue? Thanks. :)

He's an absolute stunner though! Even if "The Shark" may be required for attitude adjustments!

No probs at all on the bulb buddy. That stupid fish is back in the bloody overflow lol.

Darth Acro...? Kevin must be the little yoda thing...A very unlikely friendship you have there...and I'm sure a while ago you mentioned playing with T5 tube light sabres...

Any time you see a random spot of STN....... think of me.

Thanks for making me catch the wrasse bug hahah :headwalls:

It's a good bug to catch, the range of stunningly colored wrasse is crazy when you start looking into them more. It's like having lots of little mini show fish all swimming about. I can't recommend a better fish for adding wow to an SPS display.
I caught the bug from Richard btw so blame him.........:)

Hey Troub, i shall have to check out your journal this weekend mate

Thanks mate, yes i need to make sure he can't get caught in the pipe as he'd be killed for sure.

Great video buddy! Nothing like the fresh smell of acro in the morning huh? You are an acro-artist! Great work! Roughly, how long were those pieces out of the water?

Hey Marty, i had the pieces on the kitchen bench for 15 mins mate. When i know i'm going to have acros out of the water for a while i take a cup of tank water and every 5 mins i use a turkey baster to wet them down from tip to toe. It takes about 15 secs to squirt them over and i use fresh warm tank water each time i do it.
I also turkey baste any super glue work happening outside the tank so it's skinned over prior to touching the tank water. If you super glue a frag out of the water try dipping it in a clear container of tank water, you'll see a big slick of chemical crap appear on top of the water. If you 'wash' the frag first you won't be putting this in the tank and the rest of the glue will be skinned over and less likely to leach more chemicals prior to setting hard.
That's why super glue sets off your skimmer a lot quicker and violently than putty does, super glue crap floats and goes over the overflow fast and straight down into your skimmer if you have it positioned where you should have it - how did you get me onto a super glue ramble Marty...........:debi:

+1 and a good question!

Are you talking about the super glue or the out of the water thing Troub, although you didn't know about the super glue thing when you posted so that's weird...... how did you know i was going to mention super glue Troub ?

Biggles knows exactly how long they can tolerate being out of the water. It's not first time he has used the dry boarding technique to punish across that step out of line.

Quite right Matt, they either get some dry time or they get an intense 400W Radium tanning session :)

Or if they don't color up properly

Goes without saying really mate........

Thanks. :)

The 400W appears whiter and brighter - a noticeable difference side by side which is why i have 2 x 39W blue plus tubes in front of the 400W Radium and 2 x 24W blue plus tubes along with a 24W coral plus in front of the 250W Radium. I have the 250W at 6" off the water and the 400W at 9". I have multiple pieces under both bulbs and i see no color variation.
So in short i believe and have seen personally for years that both the 250W and 400W Radium bulbs are capable of producing similar results in regards to acro colors. I like the 400W for my display because it's 5ft x 32" wide so i want the spread i can get by running the 400W high. The tank is only 18" deep so i pretty much have no less than med/low light on any area of the tank bottom. Shading from other acros or rock work creates what i would call low light areas. Low light to me means an acro will live there but be browned out due to insufficient PUR reaching the coral.
Running the T5's along the long sides of the display really increases the useful outside areas nearer to the side glasses that you can usually only keep acans etc in. It allows me to place those acros that hold color in med/low light down very low and very close to the display windows. The way i have my islands all overhanging with acros down low and spread out so far is a big part of why most of you like the overall scaping i have done. It is meant to eventually fill in enough so that you will have the illusion of small rock bommies scattered across a white sand reef bottom that have been totally covered with acros competing for limited space. It should look pretty good if all goes to plan and the more grown in it gets the better it will look with the fish having to swim through more and more acro branches :)

I was looking back through some of the old macro vids i did about 18 months back and this one was one of my favorites lol. Had the acro all set, added the reef roids and BAM! - i don't work with pods as they refuse to take direction........ :headwally:

Oh and i have an avvy now - one of my commensal crabs that looks like a little white nano bot crab from the future........ like a creepy little terminator crab....... might stick a fork through him tomorrow and see if he has wires inside him. :reading:

I watched that video on YT. :D I am one of your loyal YT subscribers. :)

Thanks for the commentary on the halides matey. Good to know. :)

You wouldn't really fork that cute little harmless crab would you?? It may look like a robot but it's really a replicant. Pris is skin and bones and who knows if she's got a soul...

Yeah, but Pris went nuts and tried to kill Decker....

Not cool.

No probs mate, i would happily run 3 x 250W Radiums over the display instead of the intended 2 x 400W bulbs as both set ups would give me similar color results. My Radiums are the main lighting for the acros and they are supplemented with T5's. Hybrid LED/T5 units such as your ATI are the opposite with the LED's being nothing more than glitter generating supplements......... that's right i just slagged your lights lol.......

You're missing the whole point Matt, we won't know if it's harmless until we fork it............ i hadn't considered the whole Blade Runner crab possibility but you raise a valid point buddy :p

Exactly ! :)

Love the combo rock bombie, looks amazing, great look in the tank:)

Thanks Perry, here's the arch rock after i made it by sticking two rocks together. This is two and a half years ago now and the 65gal was two weeks into the cycle. All this rock is in the display now along with more i added over time. :)

Great videos Andrew good tips on aquascape gave me some ideas for the bottom part of the tank. That wrasse i thought it was dead.

Thanks mate :) That wrasse was sleeping on the sand in a quieter area of the overflow lol. I'm going to catch the two zebra dartfish that have been living in the sump for about three weeks and put them back in the display today - it's like buying new fish and adding them lol. We are up to eleven times i will have returned the wrasse to the display from the overflow. I could take measures to block the overflow but the situation has now become more personal and i am determined to outlast the fish in our little battle of the wills....... :p I meshed the overflow pipe so he can't get sucked down so now it's just going to be a matter of breaking his overflow spirit ! :hammer:

Speaking of scaping, i have a three day weekend starting this Friday morning (right now :)) so we are going to use four frags and an acro branch to turn the island we made the other day into a dragon inspired piece that will be crawling across the sand bed. It should look pretty cool if we don't stuff it up :)

This is my inspiration for the island design, my scaping is heavily influenced by my bonsai background i've come to realise lol.

Sounds very cool, just about 8PM Toronto time, looking forward to your next creation.

It'll be finished before your bed time mate. if anyone wants to follow along and create their own dragon you just need some colorful acros and half a clue at reefing to accomplish the dragon scape - Sahin you'll obviously be sitting this one out :reading:

I'll be looking for your YT video in the AM with my java :bounce3:

Oh i didn't realise you wanted a video of the process, i just took pics this time sorry. :hammer:

And that's how you make a dragon with two small islands placed near each other...........

I still have to add the two orangey red scollies, one on each island at the base which will represent the two clawed feet but in person the design is very recognizable, much more than the photo conveys.
