A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

Very interested to see your lotus flower. May be tougher than the dragon..
Along with my radiums, I have 1actinic, 2 actinic plus and two white bulbs- ab special and a giesemann lagoon blue which is very similar to the abs..
Fairly similar to your lighting except I'm 150w which seems to not quite get me the real red I want but otherwise , you're right, it does produce nice colours..

I'm glad to hear your Mandarin is getting fat and happy. I guess I've just had wimpy ones that couldn't handle the current and starved while seeking refuge.

I see a couple of the Tunzes have found their way off the back wall. Counter currents do make for a happier reef in my experience.

Things are looking good !

Ouuuulala, a new Biggles creation in the works :celeb1: So tell me again which 4 T5's I should pair up with my 250Rs?

Well.. On behalf of biggles, who is probably asleep right now.. I will take the opportunity to stick my nose in!.. If it were me, I'd use 1 pure actinic, 2 actinic plus and a white, like an aquablue+ or aquablue special.. And if you find that too blue, you could exchange one actinic plus with another white..
Biggles may have better wisdom to impart after his morning coffee..

Andrew! Did I mention how awesome your fts is??
It's awesome!

Are they... could it be.... that bottom right corner of the photo is highly intriguing.. they wouldn't happen to be the flubbery kind of polyps would they :eek2: after you come in on your Acro-steed and poke fun at my little flubber weakness :hammer: good to see even the mighty fall from grace occasionally :debi:

Tank looks phenomenal Andrew :D It really is one of my biggest inspirations and you are definitely my reef mentor/guardian angel/evil overlord :strooper: I'm definitely going to give your coral+ and blue+ tube combo a try once we sort out this Radium bulb :)

Biggles, my first post on your thread. Your tank would be an amazing experience for someone who is under the influence....
Anyway, I wanted to ask what types of pumps you are using. I saw tunzes and I believe rw jebaos. If that is the case, do you find them reasonable or their flow is too linear?

Hey Matt, I use 2 x B+ and 1 Coral+ in each triple light unit because i find it best replicates the colors the halide is bringing out in the acros. I have poor halide light spread and will be replacing the rectangular reflector from the rectangular 65gal it was meant for with a pair of 16" x 16" square reflectors for the pair of 400W Radiums to sit in. Once i have those in place i'll be swapping one of the B+ tubes out in each light unit with a Giesemann pure actinic just for the cool dawn/dusk effect.
If it was me i would be swapping those two ABS type tubes out with coral+ or the Giesemann equivalent. Don't run the ABS if you're chasing pinks and reds with Radiums, the coral plus is the one that will give you those pigments. I tried the ABS in the 65gal and this tank and both times it didn't juist do nothing, it caused some acros to look drab after a month.
That's just my opinion Matt but i really did give it a good try for months both times and i will never run an ABS tube again with the Radiums. :reading:

Biggles the acro artist. Looking forward to seeing this.

It might turn out to be a dud lol.

Man you doing all this great looking project i am just trying to get the colors to look good lol.

I can't help it Dan i need to :hammer: acros......

Thanks mate, i don't have a mandarin yet but i will once i'm ready for him.

Hey Mike, i think if i had good halide spread i'd go with the actinic, B+ & C+ as i have triple T5 units. In a twin unit i think i'd try coral+ with an actinic otherwise B+ & actinic. I think between all of us we should be able to work out the best T5 setup to run with Radiums so make sure you 'speriment' and report your findings.

Thanks Matt, i think my post above covers what i think of running the ABS tube with Radiums....... :fun4:

Oh, you'll also be pleased to know my SSC is starting to look like the piece in your picture again too :D

That's one of three different SSC color variants i have Dom and the one you have shouldn't be looking anything like that if it's happy lol. It's a very bright lime yellow with subtle pink highlights. I took a quick pic under the evening T5 lights but if you look at the SSC right above the scolly you can see your other frag of the one you already have - that's how bright it looks and grows happily 1" off the bottom. It's an excellent acro for adding bright pop down low on your rocks. The other frag and small colony are the same SSC and prefer medium lighting to look their best, you need to decide which one you are going to take - the frag or the colony i grew from a smaller frag than the little brother in the pic. The SSC top left is my favorite and i have to make you a frag of that one so you have all three. :)

The pic is gratuitous of course.......

It most certainly is mate ...............

I have a Tunze 6095 and the other pumps are all jebaos. The RW-15's are great pumps imo and nothing at all like the WP series which are best for jet like flow, that's why i ordered a WP-60 as i want something that can hopefully drive a surge from one end to the other. The RW's are way too wide flow but fantastic for normal display setups.
As an example i turned the WP-15 which is at the far end onto the W1 mode and had it pulsing on off over a couple of seconds, there was a 1/2" wave going over the overflow within 10 seconds despite all the other pumps also being on. The slop noise as each wave went over was the end of my W1 mode experiment lol.

Biggles??? With softies in his tank... You my friend have just lost 10 points in my book of excellent reefkeepers... :debi: :debi: :debi:

What are those ugly squishy mushy polpy things doing in your tank??? :strange: I recommend some kalk paste or if easily removable from the tank, bury those mushy things in the garden mate.

Dont worry mate, we wont be too hard on you...I think you just had a serious but temporary lapse of judgment when you were at the LFS or maybe your LPS mate must had spiked the complimentary tea which made you pay money for those mushy things.

I was told by Cameron at Williamstown that when i get a Majestic angel ( and i'm going to ) that it would most likely leave the acros alone if well fed and a few zoas, acans etc (flubber) would give it something to go for if it did decide to be naughty - they are sacrificial flubber offerings to the angel gods :smokin:

You really are clueless when it comes to fish psychology aren't you Sahin............ absolutely clueless.........

Each and everyone of those SSC's, while only a small variation of the others, are such stunning corals. I guess they're classic favourites for a reason :bum: The growth pattern on mine is similar to the top left as I have it mounted in the same sort of way, coming out of a branch horizontally. It's going to look fantastic once it get's growing under the Radium :D

Those SSC looks great Andrew, all the ones that come up for sale around here are either too expensive or not nearly as nice as the oe you keep over there.

I agree with the T5 combo with radiums. I had run the Giesemann Actinic+ as well as their pure actinic and then lots of different combos. The last combo I tried was the B+ and KZ FP and it looked ok but the colors were not as good. I switched back last week to 2 B+ and 2 C+ I agree it is probably the winning combo for the 4 bulbs with MH.

Tank is look sweet my friend, wish I had access to so many nice colonies, I would probably stop this madness of seeding my tank with tiny frags.

Thanks for the info on the bulbs.. I think the equivalent giesemann bulb is the aquablue coral (or d-d aquablue plus)
I used to use this a lot over my old reef... I'm going to give them a try again..
Since they are a little more white than my d-d lagoon blue and the aquablue special (damn names of these bulbs are all the SAME) I might try two pure actinic, 1 blue plus and 2 coral plus.. Worth a try..
Thank you Jedi master!!

So if I understand you acro masters right, since the fixture ships with 4 Actinics it should swap out 2 Actinics and replace with a B+ and a C+?

I think that's about right. And if that's too dim for you, you could use 1 actinic, 2 b+ and a c+...
