A Splash of Color - My SPS Peninsula Reef

Well Mr Biggles, only because you went out and bought a new acro and told us about it very quickly I let you off about your comments in relation to a lack of dangerous predators in the UK...

That new acro should turn out awesome. I love the structure on it...cant wait to see what happens to it under your Radiums mate.

Scoly??? Pics??? :hammer:

What a lame excuse for wild animals............. we have sharks that kill you in the water, snakes that kill you on land and crocodiles that kill you where ever the hell they feel like.........
This is a hedgehog sharing a UK bath - try that with a salty........ joke country.......

US animals are a joke too but i don't want to upset any of my good yank mates, one quick example of a wild animal encounter though from the snakes perspective........

Yank Rattlesnake - 'rattle rattle rattle, stay away i'm dangerous and i'll make you sick if i bite you which i don't really want to do hence my ridiculous baby rattle tail........'

Aus King Brown - 'whack ! you're dead'

What sorta snake warns you before it kills you.......... a joke snake that's what.

Bello will be back next year :)

I'm almost certain i've shown you guys everything now...........yep.......

Can not wait to hit Australia for snakes!! First is South Africa though.

Here are some pics from Costa Rica this year

Me with a nice fer de lance (B. atrox)

And a large neotropical rattlesnake (C. simus), who by the way did not rattle ;)

Both of these certainly have the ability to kill you!

Biggles what part of the Aussie are you in over there? Ill be sure to come visit!

Nice snakes trek, do you go around the world catching them?

Biggles lives in Melbourne, Victoria. Just as well or I'd be always visiting and pestering him for advice:lol:

Be interesting to see what it does mate. It has zero pigments so i have no idea what it might have been when collected. It's paling and almost white on the tips now but everything i put in the display usually freaks a bit with the lighting even on the sand.

Bloody hell i'm so envious of your selection of Acropora. Stunning pieces!!!

Hey Ormet, i'm very lucky to have access to some beautiful acros. Both my SPS LFS's stock stunning pieces on a regular basis.
Btw i find it quite disgraceful that a certain TOTM winner living in Aus has repeatedly tried to convince both my SPS stores to ship stuff to him interstate - basically trying to steal biggles acros ! :angryfire:

Me having a paddle in the bay, it's not as bad as it looks btw. You give 'em a sharp whack on the nose with your paddle and they leave you alone

This cyclist would probably have titled the pic ' me checking on the welfare of the King Brown i ran over.........'

My father taught me about 35 years ago the correct procedure for handling snakes Trey. It involved a heavy metal garden rake and a lot of whacking. I was about thirteen and i thought it was a bit cruel so i asked why not just scare them off with the garden hose so they leave.

'What, chase it next door so it bites the neighbors ?.........are you a bloody idiot ?'

He didn't expect an answer to either question and that was that. After the lesson he finished with some real words of wisdom.

'Even after you think they're dead treat 'em like they're alive because they're sneaky evil bastards and they'll kill you if they can.' - i'm passing that little gem onto you mate

The new acros are all scarily pale now but have PE so i'm happy. The one with the green arrow is totally bleached white except for the polyps so i'm a tad concerned i put it up too high too fast. Watching him closely for the first sign of RTN while we tough out the adjustment together lol.

Your acros look great Biggles, looking forward to seeing the new ones color up for you. BTW, we were put through the same snake training as kids except I had a shovel.

That's a shame, snakes are spectacular creatures. I do travel to find them all over.

Either way, love your tank biggles! Acros look phenomenal

I agree and I love snakes. Rattle snakes were a plague where I grew up though and it wasn't uncommon to encounter one or more daily. When you have small kids you do what you have to Make them safe I guess.

Thanks Trey, i haven't had dealings with a snake in a long long time mate :)

Nice addition Biggles, keep an eye on him though, he may turn into a little terror.

Do I spy some Zoas in the bottom corner of the pic? Biggles, you're slowly changing from a sticks man to flubbery stuff and even the truly yucky softie stuff. I think we need Bello back; he was a very postive influence on you; else I worry you may be turning your new tank to a Xenia farm with green star polyps as the main attraction. :p

Thanks mate, he's very shy atm. Those zoa things were hitchhikers on the raft rock, there were three six months ago but now there's about twenty lol.

That acro is starting to light up after the rapid paling, i think it's going to be very pretty :)

Wow mate, that looks like its going to be an awesome acro. I love the blue and pink hues...

Biggles, Happy New Year mate. Dont get too drunk, and keep an eye on Kevin; he may try and get the fish drunk as well. :D

Biggles, you have some amazing pieces! I'm two years into my first tank and I'm about to move into a new house. I'm planning a larger system and I'd love to go almost entirely Spathulata. They are amazing, I just wish there were more to be found in the states.

Keep up the good work.

I'm pretty certain it's going to need high light and flow to really light up but i'll find out soon when i shove a piece of it up high under the 400W.

Hope you and the family have a wonderful 2015 my friend :)

Thanks mate, bigger tanks are always exciting. Spath are very commonly collected and it's not often i don't see a few at the LFS. Here's a little hint as to what you want to aim for when you set up a spath dominant reef - think waist deep water at low tide collected acros.......;)

There would be . Except according to Sahin, Biggles hoards all the nice pieces.

Marty

There is nothing i won't do to cheat my way to the top Marty........:strooper:

Now i'm sure everyone is wondering what creepy Dave has been up to lately. He's moved to another acro where he can look even creepier in an acro cave. (Hairy crabs eyes reflect by torchlight and good commensal crabs don't btw)

cd_zps4616d03e.jpg~original

At night he spends his time hanging out upside down under the tip of a beautiful teal blue stag frag i got from Keith at Willy. That's his pink milli frag above and left of creepy Dave's stag.

The blue acro lower left is another one i may have forgot to mention now i think about it Sahin..............;)

I've never let a blue eyed fuzzy last in my tank. Every time I've ever seen one come in on a colony, there is a big bare patch at the base of the acro..
I guess with a tank full of acros and one little crab, he can't do much damage..

Here, Biggles, this may be something you've never see before..
It's a shot of one my my Japanese maples encased in ice. We've had freezing rain all day today and sometimes the ice accumulates on the branches... Makes for a lot of downed trees..

Here you can see the ice encased branches:

Over a decade ago, we had a freezing rain 'superstorm' which lasted for about a week..
It downed electric lines and even the huge steel structures that hold the power lines throughout this part of Canada and parts of the north eastern United States..
This particular storm will end tonight as the real cold weather moves in..
Figured I'd insert a little 'cold and dark' amongst all or your colorful corals! :)

Matt, those photos look real nice. Thanks for sharing. I remember in the 80's and early 90's it used to snow in London most years...however the past 15 years or so, we've only had snow once or twice in my area...I miss the snow. Right now is prime time for snow for me because I would have loved to play in the snow with my kids...but now it just gets cold and rains lots... :(
