A Splash of Color

Hi Andrew,
I see you got the little gems ... hows the little blue going
I told dave today that i am going to top that shippment last week with the news im getting on Tuesday it will be even better then the last lot
Cheers Christian
Ps last shippment was collected 23m down blue clear water one of the best reefs i have been two

Hey Christian, what i saw of the shipment was stunning mate, the two frags you cut for me are awesome little pigment bombs :) I didn't get a good shot of the other frag but it basically looks like you left it in the blue/green/purple ink bath for too long prior to bagging it up for me.........

Dave glued it to a plug and stuck it on his stupid purpley pink plastic frag holding fake rock - it looks as bad as a pirate ship - i'm pulling it out next #$%%@#! visit ! :deadhorse1:
Sorry, it's been annoying me for a long time that plastic joke rock....

I went to pay for those three acros i picked out and some socks.....

' That'll be $60- today thanks '

' Dave, i got three acros i need to pay for plus the four $5- socks to go with the sock plates you cut for me. '

' Yep, $60- '

I shoved two fifties at him and let go of them so he had to catch them and then stepped back a step...........

' Seriously, it's not that much '

' It's more than that now stop it Dave, i mean it '

He turned to the till and muttered something under his breath.......

' What, what did you just mutter Dave '

' I just said i'll work it out in store credit for you '

and then he gave me one his smarmy ' i will win ' smiles - i don't like those ones.

' There's nothing to work out and i'm not in bloody credit Dave '

' We'll see '

' No we won't see Dave, i'm gonna stroke out right here in the #$%$#$ shop if you keep doing this to me Dave. '

' I'm going Deb, he won't let me pay properly '

' He's an idiot my son, see you next time Andrew ' comes the reply from the wet room.

I got to the door and remembered...........

' You know i still need to pay for the sump right Dave ? '

' Nope, it's paid for remember '

' You know you're starting to stress me right out don't you Dave '

He lol'd and said ' welcome to my world Andrew ' ....... and then gave me that bleeping grin........

As i walked out i yelled ' five hundred Dave '

' That's a lot of store credit '............. you know i nearly got run over crossing the street when i heard Dave's last parting line......... i sat in the ute and had a smoke to get over the whole thing before the drive home. :sad2:

Oh, when i got home i ripped open the shopping bag Dave tied shut with the socks in it............ there were 12 socks in the bag............... well played Dave, well played........

:spin2::inlove: Those new ones are spot on to my taste Andrew, that tank of acro's is just ridiculous! I think you guys are living in heaven and there's an acro God. Interesting thoughts on reading the glass for phos. management, I may try that idea. Thanks for sharing the pics from your side of the world, really enjoy them.

I'm very spoiled Scott, i'm glad you're enjoying the pics mate. :)

Hi Andrew,

Your acros are looking good. You certainly have some nice acro species available in your area. The only shops that are in my area have a limited selection, but with some looking you can find some gems. I have been looking for a small frag of Pearlberry, but have yet to find a fairly priced one. On one trip to the shop, I did purchase an acro that looked and was colored like a Pearlberry and I thought my quest was finished. However, after the tank crash, I found the little brown frag covered by hair algae and buried by an avalanche of dead acro branches. Today, the same frag is a nice yellow green base color with bright magenta polyps and pink tips on the branches--another "Holy Grail" species, Acropora microclados. Not bad for 15 bucks................Jim

Hey Jim, i find one of the most interesting aspects of acro keeping is you never know what a particular piece might end up under your reef keeping conditions. Your saved frag sounds yummy :)

Center bottom - A. microclados in yellow up to pink up to mauve tips...... you could seriously do an entire display of that one species and still have crazy color contrasts. It'd look like a pink barbie doll house though.........

Top left is the piece i would have bought if i went for a fourth acro. It will turn red like the firetruck or my rose red Bulent's Bliss acro. That exact pigment is ' the one ' to watch out for and it's rare as duck poo.

Again, i'm doing my best to show you what your eyes will actually see if you come across a similar pigment pattern. You might think it's just another reddish looking acro but it's not.........;)

The thing that makes this particular piece an all over red rather than a mostly red all over with a big green base is not the obvious tips you guys are all focused on. If you look at the base where it's been cut, down BELOW most of the greener areas you can see where it has been exposed to light both in Christians holding tank and under Dave's 400W Radiums for a few days and can you see what color it's already turning. ;)

If you are mindful of small things like this i promise you that your hit rate will increase when you take a chance on wild pieces. Happens with few wild pieces so keep an eye out to get more 'all color' acros rather than tip only :)

That's it I'm packing up and moving to OZ. my commute to work would suck but would all be work it. Can't wait to see those new pieces in the display [emoji16]

I'll get pics tomorrow - after i stick em all down, already have spots picked out for most :reading:

Andrew what had made you, not using gfo, for such a long time? What happened lately, and you started using it again?

The dirty viewing glass was driving me up the wall mate.

I bet Dave will send me picks of your next willy wonka acro shipment btw Chris, sounds rather tasty. Is it colder down at 23 meters or same as 5 meters ?

Phos minus is similar grain size but very clean of particulate compared to rowa which takes ages to rinse. The AF stuff rinses clean in about 15 secs when i jiggle the bag under the tap.
I would say it's about 75% as potent as rowaphos but that's a big guess. I'm sure it's a bit weaker but not when you compare the price per liter.

It's really serendipitous that you described what you see when using a phos absorber. I had a long talk with Dave about my phos theory and we decided if i was right i might burn through quite a bit of phos absorber until i got out what was in the sand, rock and algae etc. As it turns out i peaked at glass clean 48 hours but it's getting worse again after about two weeks of phos minus. Less than a day again before i see colors lose shine due to dirty glass :hammer:

I think you just have the same thing going on but at much higher load levels throughout the system but that's just a guess really. I'm going to replace the 750ml soon and keep doing that until i see the glass stay clean for two days continuously. Then i hope to see the amount required to maintain that drop over time to a point where the phos minus is only needed to deal with phos i add daily through feeding the fish.

That's what i'm going to do for a few months and see if i can get phos well and truly under tight control.

Thanks.. That's my plan as well.. I fear it's going to cost me, though. It's a lot of gfo.
I'm trying to pull a bunch of corals out of deep sleep as well..
On another more 'worldly' note, I found it funny that you were making your coffee before getting down to answering my question. As I was reading that, I had my morning coffee in my hand, I assume you were making your evening coffee.
Tonight, while having a coffee, I'll be reading your Sunday morning coffee responses.
The modern world is a damn cool place.. People from opposite ends of the planet discussing shared interests over coffee like they were in the same room.
Would be cool to one day actually BE in the same room..
Preferably the sps room at Deer Park!

Andrew,

Any reason you havent decided to run an algae refugium, an ATS, or an algae reactor. I've had an ARID E18 since April of last year and it is lethal to PO4. To the point that I actually lost several SPS frags due to no PO4 being available in the system.

on 09-13-16, I tested my PO4 in my 120 at 0.17 (not a typo zero point one seven). The ARID had been running for about a week at that point and chaetomorpha was just starting to grow. I tested early morning 09-16-16, (not quite 72 hours later) and got a PO4 level of 0.12. All PO4 testing is done via Hanna 96713 photometer.

The ARID was expensive but effective. I have seen several new to market competitors that are lower priced, but I cant speak to their effectiveness. I bought the ARID after speaking to JBNY and seeing how his was working, and then doing some research.

You're wicked smart and have a warped sense of humor, so I know there is a reason for everything you do. No doubt there is a reason you arent running something like that, but I'd love to know why.

Thanks for the pointers Andrew on colors to look for Andrew.

I've only been diving in Hawaii and in the Cayman Islands, but I've been down below 140 feet on several of those. IME, it's a little cooler at depth, but nothing too bad. You can feel it when you cross a thermocline and temp drops a couple degrees. Personally, I never got cold since you're usually limited by time constraints and too busy swimming to get cold. But I could see critters that live down that deep typically being acclimated to a lower temp of between 68F to 75F. I'm not translating that silly metric numbers.

Andrew what had made you, not using gfo, for such a long time? What happened lately, and you started using it again?
Try sharing your sps tank with the rest of the guys,so they will be able to ask you some questions about your tank, routines, etc, too.
Sharing is very important and you surely have a lot of tips and tricks on sps/reefing to pass on to the rest of us.
A pic is worth a thousand words...
Don't be shy:)
I would love to see photos of the actual reef or even better a video :-) a day at your work, shall be a dreaming vacation, for some of us!
I bet a "please" wouldn't hurt but what would be even better is trying,as a first step,to share some pics or vids of your own, before asking other people to do so.

Andrew where in God's name are you working bud and it's a "dreaming vacation" ?????:beachbum:
If it's a nice place i'll go renew my passport and catch a flight:p
Please don't hold any welcome signs at the airport...can't afford the risk of what you might write lol

Dave dropped my little pink piece and broke it into two when he was bagging it lol......... lucky break for you Dom :)

Andrew's thread has gotten so popular that he's hired a bouncer... lol

My eyes have seen enough sparkling SPS to last a lifetime thanks to this thread-
I did manage to spy some other adventures and somehow wondered if there was some connection???

That's truly unfortunate that Dave dropped that piece and there was a frag made for me :lolspin:

You have just scored some of the most amazing acro's of a lifetime! :inlove:

You may have to work on Dave's fragging skills. Acro charm school might be a necessary fix :lolspin:. I expect those frags will grow quickly in your reef setup.......................Jim

My little 1.5" baby blue A. caroliniana bleached out pretty badly overnight  touchy little bugger obviously. Still has PE 24/7 so it's not concerning other than now taking longer to actually settle and color up. :hammer:
There is also a stronger chance now that the acro will 'green out' on me. The pigment isn't a 100% baby blue to my eye. It has a tiny hint of aqua to it which equals:

" Danger, danger Will Robinson "

If it loses all the pigment and totally bleaches i just know it will color back up some crap green color because it's happened to me before with 'aqua blue' pigments.

The other piece i believe to be A. desalwii. I think i already have two colonies with almost identical pigment patterns. One is another desalwii and i think the second table is the very similar looking A. willisae.
Anyway, the pigment is a solid light blue, not the glowy bleached baby blue you see on fresh stags etc. The branch looks like light blue chalk. The polyps are orangey red and pale but you will clearly see they're not pale brown or tan if you spot this pigment set.

1q_zpsvquifzvx.jpg

I am almost certain that i will be able to show you over the next 6-8 weeks how this pigment

wq_zpsjftubcnm.jpg

turns into this pigment

3q_zpsa4npthap.jpg

Obviously if i'm wrong i'll look like a total dick but that's nothing new....... :wavehand:

It is pretty much impossible to photograph the fireworks acro when it's happy and shining brightly. It's rich reddish purple almost entirely covered with the shimmering satin blue highlight pigment and bright red polyps everywhere except the axial tips which are white. That acan has bright red mouths but if i add the red that's really present you won't believe me lol.......
I want both Perry and both Matt's to save up and drop $400- on a Jason Fox fireworks frag because i know you will forget the dollars the minute you see it smiling brightly - there is nothing that looks anything like it boys.

I have two other 1" frags in other spots just because it's too ridiculous for words. :spin3:

Unfortunately Andrew here in Canada it's not as easy as just dropping $400 to get something from Jason fox for myself or Matt (Reefmut). Getting Acros from the states is very tricky.
