A. thiellei is extinct.

I used the "translate" feature... They also called it something like a red Indian clown or some such thing. No mention of Thielle's anemonefish.
I did try contacting the site but there was an error from the site when I did. I was hoping that someone here might know the site owner or administrator and at least tell them to fix the information.

However, good luck trying to enforce copyrights. I have had numerous underwater images stolen and used and, despite take down requests, they were often ignored.

In the US people seem to be more respectful or fearful (pick one) its the international offenders that are the biggest problems. Its not a business. So for me, its more of an irritation than anything else.

I agree. For me it was a business so I stopped putting up images that were not watermarked.

I hear you on it being annoying. Aquacon has been using one of my fish pics to sell a fish since 2003 and won't take it down. I even sent them a letter from a lawyer after all else failed. It didn't have a watermark because it was used in a Reefkeeping Magazine article here & was credited underneath instead of on the pic. It annoys me they're making money off my pic & not even crediting me, much less paying for its use.

I started watermarking that particular image when I noticed how popular it had become with unauthorized users.

That is awsome, walt please send me your extinct fish
Right on that, B.

Take it to the next step. As I understand it, a student may use your pic for a research project but it has to give credit. A retailer using one of your pics without written authorization is one of the most flagrant violations. You can sue them even if they take it down. I read an article on this (I tried to find it for you) a company got sued for posting a picture. The artist/photog who owned the image was selling it for $10 per print. As the company who posted it knew it was a problem it was removed from his site but was sued for a few thousand anyway.

Trouble is, it takes money & time to sue, and they count on that. You can charge whatever you like (within reason LOL) for use of a print so $10/day comes out to a lot since 2003. My lawyer isn't a copyright lawyer, either, so there's that, too. It's always in the back of my mind, though.

Yeah, I can't disagree there. If it were worth it to me, I'd have done it myself. LOL!

Aquacon has been using a picture of a pink Yuma I bought off eBay years ago from someone else for many years. It was the same picture in the ebay listing. The yuma I recieved was definitely the one in the photo because it was on the same rock as the photo. I guess they are WYSWSFO (What You See We Stole From Others).

You should be glad it's just a fish!
This has nothing to do with this topic, but in 2007 I did a photoshoot in Italy for some mens underwear (yeah, I know...)
Some of the pictures were never used, or so i thought...
Years went by, and one day I heard there was a picture of ME in, let's say "a less conservative" website... How nice.
And it was american website, so that much for the "international violators". Well, I'm not american, so it is actually international to me ;)
I've seen my pictures (reef related and not-so-reef-related) around, but I don't really mind... At the end of the day, there is nothing you can do to stop it. Once a picture is on the net, it stays there forever, and ever, and ever... Don't put them online if you don't want them to be used.

Consider yourself lucky. I'd be extatic if someone wanted pictures of me in my underwear! LOL!!!

Yeah. I watermarked them for a while after I caught people borrowing them but too many people already had pics of mine from before I started watermarking them. So, it seems like I became more stressed over protecting my pics (which aren't usually that great to begin with) than I was with enjoying the hobby. So, I haven't done it in a while. Most people are cool about giving me photo credit or removing my pics when I ask for it.

I know using others pictures is wrong but if someone uses my pictures I am normally flattered. I know they should give me credit but even if they don't I know that it is my picture and that makes me feel good.

If I was a professional photographer I would watermark my photos, but since I just take lackluster pictures of my tank, someone using them has never bothered me.

I'm not sure how they stay in business. I've seen bad feedback for them ever since I joined this board!

...a continuous supply of new blood, I reckon.

It is flattery to an extent but then you realize that now something you worked really hard to get is being pawned off as someone else's work. I've taken hundreds of pictures of my thielleis and none ever turned out as well as that one. That's not cool.
Compound that with a retailer claiming they have something in stock and are using your photo to advertise it (as stated above) is even worse because you know they're pulling a bait and switch on countless customers... or in my case, telling people that a "species" is extinct when the very picture of the fish they're saying is extinct is sitting in my tank with a mate and two others in adjacent tanks. Not only that but I know several others that have them and one that is spawning. In fact there is a pair in Thailand where the site originates...

That sort of thing bothers me... and I think it ought to.
