A very sad day...

Today my dog was barking at my aquarium for hours and after I got back from taking the dog for a walk I went to clean the glass of my aquarium and noticed a small greenish yellowy thing on the ground, and to my horrific surprise noticed it was my beloved Yellow Watchman Goby:( (that is my avatar), so my dog was barking to let me know it was on the ground. Btw it would have jumped through the night because I would have noticed it moving this morning.

I have egg create covering the top and I plugged all the openings that the egg create couldn't reach so it must have jumped through the egg create holes :headwalls:

I'm thinking of replacing it with some type of Goby, Blenny, or Jawfish.

A very sad day...* oops I misspelled it.

Very sorry for your loss. I love my YWG.

I think the problem here is the eggcrate. It's pretty widely regarded as not an adequate lid for jumpers.
You can get a netted screen top from BRS for about 50$. Very much worth it in my opinion, lets 99% of the light through, and makes it impossible for fish to jump.

Again, sorry for your loss. I hate losing fish.

I was actually thinking of covering the egg create with cheese cloth temporary because I don't have a sump and therefor have to have the hang on the back skimmer which makes it really hard to make a netting top and it would be a bit of a waste of money seeing as I have plans to get a sump installed soon and then I would have to make a whole new top, but after the sump is installed netting will be my TOP priority.

Sorry to year about your goby. It is a sad day to find a fish on the floor, dried out. I've been there too...jawfish are even more notorious jumpers so be sure to have the covering sorted out if you get one.

Absolutely agree, I will make sure to have a better screen or make the original safer.

I plan to get the BRS screen if I can't find plastic bug-screen framing locally. The aluminum frames I found so far are just too dangerous.
Eggcrate is not good for many reasons, one being that it blocks too much light. Having to wide holes is another.

I used extruded aluminum that is used for making window screens and it worked great. There are many different types of extruded aluminum configurations, just get the one that you like best. I built mine with scrap from a shop, the most expensive part of my top was buying the 1/4" screen. If you Google it you can find it much cheaper than BRS has it. I think I paid $.050 a sq ft? so it was like $4 plus $3 or so shipping.

I'm sorry for your loss. :(

I use a product called plastic chicken wire. It is 1/4" grey mesh and it can be used in conjunction with standard window frame material. The mesh was $10 for a 2' x 50' roll. I got it at the local garden centre.

Sorry for your loss. As others have said the 1/4 inch netting is a much better choice than eggcrate.
Good luck with your new fish.

Thank you everyone for the help! I'm probably getting a few barnacle blennys and I'll defiantly have to cover the holes really well before I get them.

I covered my egg crate with screen from Lowes. Took a hot glue gun and glued it to the egg crate. Already saved one fish since I found my six line wrasse in my overflow. If the screen wasn't there, he would have been on the floor guaranteed. :) Sorry about your loss man. Sucks losing a fish as I've been there multiple times (before my screen).

That's a really good idea, thanks.

I had virtually the same thing happen with a snowflake eel. I got the eel back in alive, but it died shortly after. Dog was the first to notice it was out. Good luck with the cover. :(

Ya, I think it's about a 5-10 minute window of being able to save fish that have jumped:(. Thanks.

Sorry about your poor fishy!
I have always had bad luck with small fish..if one jumped out, i'd cover the tank, then one would go down the overflow..they were always one step ahead of me on ways to kill themselves..lol.

Yup, they always seem to jump when you least expect it!
