You will get more light output when using them on the "HQI" ballast, and a more white light. I'm sure you would expect a loss in your spikes a little earlier when running it at a higher wattage, but you would probably still be able to get 10 months or so out of it. If you are running any 400W SE bulb with a magnetic ballast I would recommend using the HQI every single time.
