Acceptable ALK swing?

I'm not a chemistry expert, and IMHO you should be OK, but only just barely. That's a pretty big swing for just one day. How big is your tank/system (total water volume)? How much of what do you dose? And how many lps and sps corals do you have?

I asked this question a while back in the SPS Keepers forum, most responses said 0.2 or 0.3 was the max they allowed for good results. I'd concur, since I saw the best results in my system with 0.2 or less per day.

Can you dose multiple times per day to smooth out the peaks and valleys?

Over a 48 hour period mine drops from 9 - 8dkh, thats how often I buffer and all my corals are nice and healthy.

If you are getting swings, the way to solve it is to get the water to the setting you want, then add 2 tsp per gallon of kalk to your ATO reservoir. That doses it constantly, or at least adds very little, and keeps your calcium level and alk steady. You need a magnesium level of 1350, calcium at 420, alk at 8.3, and with kalk (Mrs Wages' Pickling Lime), it will hold very steady.
