Achilles question

I posted this in the primer thread as well but haven't gotten any responses..

I picked up my Achilles yesterday from a LFS that went and got him from living color in Miami. He looks good and is pecking at a little nori and ive seen him snag a few pieces of mysis so far. I'm going to pick up some bloodworms tonight along with some other colored algae sheets as he's not eating as aggressively as I would like.. but its been less than 24 hrs

How much flow should I provide for my AT? He's currently in 40g breeder QT with a RW-8 on else mode pointed towards the top for gas exchange along with an air pump in the tank. I have (2) RW-15's in the DT and could swap the RW-8 out for a RW-15 for him if needed.

He is being QT'd with a PBT, AT is a little bigger both are about 3" or so. There are also (2) small black ice clowns and a small yellow tang, probably 2" or so.

No signs of ich on the PBT or AT yet but all will eventually go through prazi and cupermine.

Are there any particular signs that I should look for that additional flow is wanted?

Another question would be.. What salinity would you recoomend for the AT? I typically would keep my QT around 1.022 and the DT at 1.026.. I read today a post that said the AT prefer higher sg.. like that of the DT (1.026) Thoughts?

Put SG at the same as DT. AT really can't have enough flow IMO. Feed more nori and mysis enriched with selcon at the very least. Bloodworms aren't the best to feed especially if the AT is eating nori and mysis

Agree with all said above, esp the flow advice. can't stress enough how important flow is for acanthurus tangs in captive systems.

soak those nori sheets in selcon too.

ok thanks.. I have been experimenting with the flow by changing the speed of the RW-8 and I will say he's been more active with lesser flow.. when I turn it up full blast he just kind of hovers in one spot. But.. im going to put in the RW-15 tonight and see how he responds..

he has been eating nori more aggressively the last day or so.. hopefully that continues. Overall I think its going well but he's definitely still very skittish

This will pass eventually. You have to think the first interaction with humans was being plucked from the ocean and put into a a clear glass box to be looked at by humans... He will figure out that you mean food

@acrohead, I believe that's what Derek was saying. That AT and all acanthurus as you stated can't ever get enough, meaning bump those powerheads up to the max, the AT will love u for it

ok cool.. I think Ill throw the RW-15 in there tonight and see how much water I can blow out

When I did TTM with a AT I had in three 11g tanks I had a 1100gph and 1400gph powerhead in the tank with the AT and it loved it. When he went into my DT he would swim directly in front of my MP60 in a tank that had 250xs turn over within the DT via a closed loop... Point is there is no way you can have too much flow for the tang

We have 2 mp40's and 2 mp10's in our tank and he would still probably love more flow. NLS pellets have made a huge difference in our Achilles as well, he's actually pretty obese but has done great on them. We also used selcon religiously when we first got him years ago and always soaked the nori in it.
