Achilles Tang Primer

DNVO theres a couple suspicious spots on him. Might be the glass, But i se it on both sides of him. JMO
How long ya had him? He looks a titch skinny.
I would keep him well fed 3+ meals a day.

Also wanted to add i have been feeding extra nori. I do feed 1 time a day with small amts of pellets or mysis soaked in selcon.
Then 2-3 times of red nori. I have 3 algae grazer tangs so i thought i would up the veggies, and lessen the fats and protiens.
Also he is checking himself in the reflection in the glass.
He is flashing and getting agressive with himself. LOL
I believe he is adapting well to the tank. He hangs out in the flow to the top of the tank. He zips all over in and out of rock work.
I added alot more flow yesterday and it looks like he is taking advantage of it.
:)
I dont think i am successfull yet. Heard all too mny times where people had them for 6 mos to a year and they just die off too.
Now if i can keep him 5-10 years then i would consider myself lucky, Right now i am just hoping!

Just an update on my achilles. He is doing great, and FAT. He is very easy going for an achilles. He is not aggresive in the least.
He flex's his fins when the purple and much bigger orange shoulder come to close to his food. LOL Thats it though, All the fish get along really great. He is eating nori, mysis, flake, and pellets. He absolutely go's nutty for the pellets. I dump anything else in and he swims around eating it, But when i add pellets he is like a trigger. LOL Eats them very aggressively. Thats a good thing, Because mysis is going to be a treat for them of 1-2 times a week. Mostly pellets and nori will be fed from now on.
I can cut the feedings down to 3 times a day, and eventually 2 times a day.
The swimming behavior of my achilles is different from my other tangs i have or had. The other tangs swim around slowly and graze on the rocks. He will do that too, But will swim off in a flurry, Then stop head off to the top near the flow of the powerheads and catch a wave back. He is a very active fish.
He is swimming non stop unless he is picking on the rocks.
I am going to add a bit more flow in my tank. I have 2 tunze 6201's and a tunze 6125. I'll be adding 4 penductors off of a reeflo blackfin.
With all that flow do you have corals? I'm running into the problem now is with all the flow my corals are looking bad and I don't have nearly as much flow as you. I'm only running two mj mods. I want to keep my achillies happy but at the sametime, I need happy corals to. Do you have any full tank shots?

My corals are doing great! I have zoa's,sps, and lps. I have 2 tunze 6201's 1 tunze 6125, and a reeflow Blackfin 3600 and soon to be with 2 penductors on my return.
No new recent tank shot. Funny you say that i know people with alot more flow than me and there tanks looks great. The ocean has alot more flow that we can provide. LOL

Well sadly my achilles is dead. I thought it was going really well.
Woke up today and he as covered in ich. He still ate very well.
I put him in the hospital and treated with copper. That polished him off. :(

Heres a vid i found on you tube. Pretty cool with the achilles in the ocean.

Sorry about your loss. Don't give up.
How old is your tank??

Tank is about 6 mos old. Tank is pretty well established and cycled. Not the extent some are, But i see hundreds of pods when i turn on the lights. SPS are thriving, and brightly colored.
The fish did great, Just the ich got him and the copper set him over the edge. My mistake not to qtank him.
Thanks! Maybe in a year or so.

I had mine for over 4 yrs. I could scratch his back and belly, he was a truely strange fish, swam upside down and flip around race back to the other side of the tank at mach1. Put him out in the garage in my 240 and noticed over time not as full of energy, then out of the blue got ich and died within days. The more I think about, he wanted attention and didn't get as much as before the move, sounds far fetched but I really think so, when I came home from work I would put my hand in the tank everyday and mess with the guy when he was in the house..he loved it. Would I get another one...NO! Kinda of a high maintence tang compared to the others, it's just my opinion of course.

Mine is doing well so far. It's the first time I am able to raise one without issues. The one difference between now and then is the age of my tank. It's been up and running since '05. Also the tang is much larger (6 inches). I also did not quarantine this time. I find they deteriorate in the small confines of a quarantine tank.

I agree, The qtanks are good if you can have a 100+ gallon qtank. I cannot unfortunately. I may in the future, But its going to be awhile for me to get up the nerve again. Next time i will get one straight from a diver in hawaii.

Try soaking it in selcon. Gedt him eating some fatty foods like mysis soaked in selcon, and pellets. Those there will fatten him up.

Creetin how long did your achillies last? Mine has been going stronge now for a little over a month just wondering if he is in a safe zone where i dont have to worry about him dieing off on me

here's what got mine eating mysis. So i bought the sea algae with garlic in it he would just devour this, he would eat the mysis but spit it back out. I than got garlic additive that I add to the mysis now he loves to eat this also.

Mine almost 3 mos, I had him eating everything. I should have left him in The DT. As soon as i pulled him and treated with copper he croaked 8 hrs later. He was still active and eating very well. Just could not shake the ich.
My advise is if he does devolp ich leave him alone.
My friend had one in QT and did all that and he still got ich. He left it alone and its still doing great. It flares up with a couple spots of ich, But he has lasted around 8 mos or so and fat.
I am kicking myself!
