Achilles Tang Primer

so should I stop feeding mine nori and keep on feeding pallets and see if it eats that?


irf it still does not eat pallets, after how many days should I put nori back?

this fish was eating ur NLS pallets at the store though

I would only stop feeding it what it is eating now if I felt like it was fat and healthy already, but that it was just being picky. I would go a few days, feeding only pellets every day. The other fish will eat it, and the Achilles will see that, and may decide to try them, and may decide that it likes them. Again, I would only do this to a healthy fat fish...'cause a fish that is eating Nori is better than a fish that is not eating at all.

very true...my fish is fat though...and its in my tank for 4 weeks now...I will give it 2 more weeks and then try your method

btw...when can I rest assure that the fish is safe in my tank, I mean like after how many weeks or months...I will know the fish is fine now

I am sure it has been posted somewhere in this 29 page thread and have read though some of it but I have a question i am sure is a bit controversial. What is the minimum size tank for a Achilles tang? I have a 180g tank 72x24x25 that i am considering keeping a Achilles tang in but i have to know that it will be able to live a good life in that size tank. The tank will have minimal aquascaping in it so it will have a lot of room to swim and i plan on keeping a lot of flow in the tank.

tagging along.. Would like to know if a 180 gallon would consider to be a good size tank for an achillies.

I would keep the new guy in the container a couple of days, basically until the existing fish no longer pay any attention to it.

I just added an achilles to my tank tonight, so I'm going to try to contribute to this thread and log my experiences with this fish as he adapts to living in my reef (hopefully).

My new achilles is about 3" long and still has juvi colors. I had my LFS order him for me but I took him home still in the bag from the wholesaler. I drip acclimated him for about 2 hours in a dark bucket with an airstone to keep the water moving, and he didn't seemed too stressed out at all.

I added him straight to my 180 gallon display tank after much debate about whether to quarantine or not. I decided his chances of living are going to be best if he is added straight to the display.

Within 5 minutes of being added to the display, he is pecking at the rocks and nibbling on some hair algae that has recently sprung up. I haven't tried to feed him yet but I will update once I do.

Can anyone tell me at what size/age they start to get the large orange tear drop? Mine is about 3" and still only has a really small orange patch.

As a concept for adding nori without splashing yourself. I took some fishing line and attached it to the top of my hood and hung an algae clip to it. The clip hangs about 10" into the water. I can now pull it out of the tank by the line and add nori without reaching into the tank. It's also kinda cool how it sways in the current when there is algae attached to it. If you don't like the look, you just pull the line and pull it out of the water once they have eaten all of it.

I have 3 tangs in my 8' tank and feel that the achilles is kinda cramped in there. The pbt is fine, but the achilles is constantly moving. They really like to move, I think I need a bigger tank for him. He is only about 4" long at the moment I think.
 
I lost a blue throat trigger due to my 2 tangs. The Achilles, who now is established as the boss, and the blue Tang chased it and didn't let it sleep in peace untill all the lights where out so it jumped overboard (onto land) after beeing chased, and is no more. It's, however, not generally agressive in the tank, as I believe noone wants to bully around in there anymore. It doesn't have any competition.
 
hey everybody i got an achilles about a month ago he got got ick a couple days after i got him but is being treated with hypo, currently on week 4, he i doesnt have any dots any more but he still flashes occasionally is this normal this far into hypo? he also eats like crazy and is always swimming (mainly against my PH) and lately he has developed some light spots that sorta come and go is that stress related?

The orange spot on mine has really increased in the last 4 months that I have had it. It won't take long.
 
I guess I'm going to hold off for my own Achilles tang because if a 4" Achilles finds it small in an 8' tank, there is no way I could provide enough room for one long term with my 6' 180 gallon.

However, the quest begins finding out what minimum size tank should I get for an adult Achilles. I upgraded to this 180 gallon 6 months ago because I thought this would be suffice for an Achilles. Only if I knew this is not big enough.. *sigh*

Mine is in an 8' 240 gallon, and I think it is plenty happy enough. It spends more time fighting its reflection than anything else anyway.

Your Achilles has flukes and hypo won't kill flukes. Most fish should be quarantined and treated for ich and flukes, even Achilles tangs.
 
Day 3 update on my achilles:

The achilles has been eating nori very aggressively since I first tried feeding him, but hasn't taken to anything else yet. He is completely disease free as far as I can tell and is acting normally. He's a little skinny, but since he is eating so much nori he should gain weight quickly.
 
It's day 11 and my achilles is still doing great. Tonight I'm going to be treating with Prazipro just to make sure he doesn't have any flukes or worms.

Any tips on getting him to try new foods? He aggressively eats nori but he isn't gaining much weight off of that. I've tried hikari mysis, PE mysis, brine, nls (both marine and thera A), and fish roe and he shows no interest at all. I really need to get him eating something which will fatten him up.
