Achilles Tang Primer

i added him right now to my 180g display as well since it was the advice of the LFS also. i was thinking of keeping him in my 20g quarantine for maybe a week till i get it to eat well but since it was just stressing him out, i acclimated him and put him in the display. hes hiding in the rocks now since its night time here, hopefully tomorrow he comes out and starts to feed. the ich seems to be at bay though.

ill be putting a couple of nori clips around my tank tomorrow. i got red, green and brown algae from the shop just to make sure he eats one of them. haha i hope that works

Hope it works out for you. I would not listen to a fish store that tells you to put a fish in your display without QT.

Not worth the risk......

hey dude, this what worked for my achilies, if you like you can follow it at ur own risk

I got mine and put it in my 150 display right away, and the next day it did have some ich, but I went to the store and got a Cleaner Wrasse (even tho they dont eat ich, but somehow it help lol) and I got AM Selcone and Kent Marine Garlic Extreme, then got sea weed, soaked it in the garlic and selcone for 30 mins and then took a live rock from the tank, put the sea weed on the live rock, rubberband it and put it in the tank, I also put two of those, one on each end of the tank, this way the achilie will go and eat from one of the rock where there's less fish around.

Keep on doing this and achilies will start eating and loose the ich, dont be panic, whatever you do, dont take the fish out of ur DT now, b/c it will stress it more.

Dont waste ur money on any other food, I went and bought food worth $100, and my tank didnt eat anything, oh yea, try fresh lettus too, its not healthy but it will get it to start to eat.

If you put the sea weed on a clip, it wont eat it first, b/c its differnt for it, its best to put it on the live rock and place the rock on the sandbed, more natural.

My achilies in my tank for 9 weeks now, and its healthy and fat, but does not eat any other food etc for sea weed on a rock (soo hard to feed it every day, but still)

Also, dont use too much garlic, I lost all my SPS b/c I used too much garlic and brought my ph down etc.

Is yours picking the rock?, if so its a good sign and its getting its food from there.

best of luck with your achilie dude

Also, all these points are not mine, all the great ppl in this thread and in other threds said this and worked for me.

I was also gonna use protomarin coral to get rid of the ich today. I had some ich with my purple tang in my other tank but after i dosed this, it just went away. hopefully its just as effective with this tank.

yeah i normally wouldnt listen to the LFS but after reading quite a few pages from this primer, i thought it might not be such a bad idea since maybe he was getting stressed since my QT was too small and maybe he felt exposed. he looks much more at home now! haha

I would recommend QT in a larger tank. If your fish is known to have ich why would you want to spread it to the rest of your fish in the DT. You may be able to suppress the ich by boosting the fishes immunity system but it will never completely go away. Just my two cents.

I recently passed the two-year mark with my Achilles. My tips;
Heavy water flow - I've got a Hammerhead feeding a 185g display, it's opened up as much as the three 1.5" drains will handle. The Achilles is VERY active and you can see how it uses the high flows areas to bounce around the tank.

High oxygenation - I utilize as much surface agitation in the sump as possible. It's a 60g with a 2'x3' footprint. I have two drains opening above the water line.

Vitamins - I give seaweed 2-3 times a week, at least once a week I soak it in Selcon

Awareness - keep an eye on the fish, it's sensitive. Any little spot appears and I soak the seaweed in some garlic. With a healthy Achilles this is all it takes to clear anything up.

I feed the above mentioned seaweed, plus Marine Cuisine daily. The Achilles is a hog and rules the tank.

hey guys lets keep this thread live with updates

anyone with their achilies tang's pix?

btw after how many month you can safely assure your achilies is doing good in your tank and safe

like I have mine for 2.5 months now, do I need to still worry about it?

what I do is, every day feed one sheet of NORI to it in the rock, here and there it will get small ich, when it does, I soak the nori in Selcone and KM Garlic Extreme and feed it once ot twice, and then it goes away

Thanks
Pran

Hey Pran, I have had my achillies going on 7 months now and honestly still live in fear, my husband says you have 300g of water held by a panel of glass in your livingroom whats to fear.

oh yea...how is ur achilies doing, how big did u buy it at and what size is it now?

I see how it grows pretty fast compare to other fihs ehh...does urs get ich here and there if so what you do to get rid of it?

what store did you buy it from here in T.O?

I HATE ICH...... i just finished 6 weeks of hypo in my display everything was great, my Achilles is eating anything i put in the tank (loves nori and flakes) ...until i raised the salinity back up, the ich came right back much less though at least. other than that everything seems to be doing great

Hey Pran, I go to alot of trouble for my achillies. I use a chopped garlic clove to rub his nori with vitamin C and Zoe, let it dry and feed, I soak his plankton and mysis in selcon and garlic and I keep his water perfect, he's alot of work but he is gorgeous and I love him, I admit it I love my fish.

Eon, I have considered this, hypo in the display but how did you keep your ph correct and did you have any issued with die off, amonia etc? Hypo is tricky and the salinity has to stay below 1.009 at all times and then bringing the salinity back up is a time consuming process, alot of trouble to have ich return, very frustrating.

it is, i monitored the ph through my Apex and kept it up with TONS of aeration and my windows have been open for a month straight, i avoided die off by removing as much rock as possible while still keeping some caves for cover and doing several water changes throughout. the ich is very mild so i hope hell just build an immunity to it

Achilles tangs, Purple tang, and powder blue tangs are my favorites. Mine's still in hyposalinity QT 7 weeks. Will be raising the salinity in 1 more week.

That is awesome! I love powder blue's too but I'm afraid my achilles will never accept another acanthutus tang. Maybe I'll try a very tiny one in a year or so.
How big is your DT? It seems small for such heavy swimmers.

heres mine, 4 months and going strong

stef, that achilles looks flawless.

what are the dimensions to your tank and what other tankmates does the achilles have? is that FOWLR? what do you have for flow?

thanks..

Forgot to mention....both Achilles are juvys, one is about 3.5 inches and the other just a bit smaller. The powder blue is a bit bigger than both of them.

The smaller Achilles wasn't introduced into the QT after all the fishes were in after 1 week. Achilles are hard to come by where I live, Taiwan. They are flown straight from Hawaii and I don't let it transit through the LFS. It comes straight to my home and was the only Achilles that got to this country in 3 months. That Achilles was acquired in October and I had a very worse case of Marine ich outbreak that wiped out all the fishes except for ones you see in the QT. I've already ordered for a juvenile sohal and some angel fish including a queen angelfish. They are hard to come by in Taiwan. My favorite fishes are the Achilles and Sohal.
